Fave Former Players - Top 5

My mate and I were discussing former players at the weekend and were both in relative agreement on our top 5.

Being in our mid-30's we are largely influenced by the 91 cup side;

Cooper - top class to watch at close quarters from the front row of the old terracing

O'Donnell - especially the early days, box-to-box, unbelievable energy, goalscoring threat

MacKinnon - motored up and down the left side, gritty and determined

Arnott - Legend, 100% every game, did amazingly well

Nijholt - pure class at the back

Bubbling under;

Boyd

McFadden

Dikstra

Kirk

Martin

Anyone care to share their own?

A younger perspective (born 87): -

McFadden - For sheer entertainment

O'Donnell - Agreed as per your comments

Arnott - Agreed as per your comments (he was my favourite player when I first started going to games with ma da)

Coyne - quality striker who was a regular scorer in my young Motherwell supporting days

Martin - great defender for Motherwell playing over 200 games and I loved his old if in doubt punt the ball right over the east stand mentallity.

My faves in no particular order

Phil O'Donnell (see previousl descriptions)

Joe Wark (Old Rubber Legs, only man who could tackle from behind and not commit a foul)

Graeme Forbes ( The Original Psycho. (Sorry Colin))

Luc Nijholt (HIs "One of the Proudest Moments in my Life speech will be forgiven lol)

Ian McLeod (Big Marsh who wouldn't play on a Sunday, still was a no nonsense kind of player)

There are just too many who fall just outside this top five>

Dougie Arnott

Stevie Kirk

Shuggie Sproat

John Gahagan

And too many more without higjacking the entire thread

And so many of the players from the ancell babes era who I only have hearsay on how good they were

Sorry for rabbiting on guys

McRae

Pettigrew

Wark

Davidson

Kirk

Being an oldie the first three came fairly easily, and, if I'm honest so did the fourth. Vic Davidson was an absolute joy to watch, one of the best midfield players I've seen in a Motherwell jersey. From the modern era, McAllister, O'Donnell, McFadden, Cooper, all came close but in the end it was a straight decision between Kirkie and Dougie. Kirkie's all round boys own career, going in goals and saving a penalty scoring in every round of the cup incuding the winner in the final, becoming our top European scorer. If I had played for Motherwell that's the career I'd want.

Bobby Graham (friend of my dad)

Dougie Arnott (pretty obvious)

Davie Cooper (genious, with the left peg anyway)

Willie Pettigrew ( Went to his dads house for halloween when I was a kid, idolised him and still a pleasure to meet him on occasion)

James McFadden ( when I stopped going to games, my mates talked me into coming along again to see this kid, entertainment value was there and I fell in love with the game again)

Couldn't possibly keep to 5.

In no particular order

Dougie Arnott

Colin O'Neil

Davie Cooper

Luc Nijholt

Steve Kirk

Rab McKinnon

Brian Martin

Tommy Coyne

Sieb Dykstra

James McFadden

Miodrag Krivokapic

Martyn Corrigan

Good many others I have a lot of time for but these ones stand out for a variety of reasons. Again would also add Craigan when he becomes an ex player and the housewives favourite of course!
