  1. I think you said something similar last pre-season and look how the regular season turned out The idea that there are subtilties in the performance of pre-season games that only the well initiated can understand has been doing the rounds on this board for some time. The fact is that a 2-0 defeat of a pro team to Airdrie in any one of the 365 days in a year is a sign that the pro team is mediocre at best. That is not to say that Motherwell will be relegated this season after all they will be playing in a top division littered with mediocrity. That is a really poor result tonight and indicative of a professional team that by and large plays at a very poor level. I don't think Rangers lost one single pre-season game last season, including a thumping of Motherwell. As it turned out they then thumped us in the regular season to and went on to be unbeaten in the league. The right attitude starts pre-season and good teams beat poor teams pre-season or not. As an aside, tonight was a competive game so farcical though it is, our season has actually started.

  2. Fans like you are the biggest problem that we as a club have. “Let’s just accept getting beat by our lower league local rivals cos they scored two great goals and the pitch was hard tae play oan”. I’m glad you aren’t embarrassed by that shambles.

  5. WILLIAM (BILLY) REID (INSIDE FORWARD) MOTHERWELL FC 1954/55 – 1961/62 When Motherwell manager George Stevenson signed William (Billy) Reid on his 17th birthday on 31st January 1955 from Wishaw High School he disappointed fifteen top ranking clubs in Scotland and England who had been angling after him for some considerable time. According to the 1955-56 club handbook he was 5’ 6” and 10st when he arrived at Fir Park. He came from a football background as his father played juvenile and junior football, his younger brother Sammy (who eventually joined Motherwell) played schools and youth football and his uncle was the former ‘Well wing half, Tommy McKenzie who was on the Fir Park staff when Billy arrived. As a teenager he won many honours and prior to arriving at Fir Park he possessed 3 Schools International and 3 Youth International caps. He proved his worth when playing in the reserve side and scored 7 goals in Division ‘C’, 2 in the Supplementary League and 2 in a friendly against Dumbarton. Billy made his league debut in claret and amber and solitary game in 1954/55 season against Dundee on 26 March 1955, ‘Well lost 2-0. He also played in the Lanarkshire Cup Final against Airdrie on 14 May 1955 scoring one of the goals in a 3-2 ‘Well win after extra time. When Bobby Ancell arrived in 1955 he started to sign young players like Billy, John Martis, Ian St John, Charlie Aitken. In Ancell’s first league game as Motherwell manager Billy scored in a 5-2 win over East Fife at Fir Park on 10 September 1955, Johnny Aitkenhead with a hat-trick and Alex Bain were the other scorers. Billy lined up in the first floodlit match at Fir Park against Preston North End on Wednesday 29 February 1956. Unfortunately he was injured after a few minutes and was replaced by Pat Quinn, ‘Well lost 3-2. The Motherwell team that night was; Weir, Kilmarnock, McSeveney, Forrest, Paton, Aitken, Kerr, Reid, Gardner, S. Brown, Williams. Scorers for ‘Well were Brown and an own goal from a soon to be famous manager, Tommy Docherty. Preston scorers were Dennis Hatsell, Tommy Thomson and legendary Tom Finney. According to the 1961/62 club handbook he played in 8 league games during season 1960/61 and 3 league cup fixtures, his last appearance was on Boxing Day 1960 at Fir Park in a 2-1 defeat to Rangers. Although he appears in the 1961/62 club handbook as being one of the signed players for that season he didn’t play a league game again and moved to Airdrie in October 1961 for £4,500. In just under 7 years at Fir Park Billy made 73 appearances scoring 11 goals, (56 league/9 goals, 3 Scottish Cup/0 goals & 14 League Cup/2 goals) add to this a number of friendly games during his time. This is only a brief summary of his career whilst wearing claret & amber but it can be clearly seen that he is one of the clubs legends and long remembered as a member of THE ANCELL BABES. Condolences to his family, friends & former teammates.

  6. I know we are short of numbers right now but the team selection to me has seemed odd. O'Donnell must surely need a rest but he's played every minute. We've only used 14 players over the three matches. Guys like Amaluzor, Parker and Shields brought in but no where to be seen. Guys like Max Johnston and David Devine nowhere either. Same team, more or less, same tactics. Not using these matches to try out various things or look at players. It all seems a bit....rigid.

  7. Okay well, I don’t think I ever did actually say that “we were definitely going down” at any point since I came back on these forums, but if you can provide any evidence otherwise then be my guest. Or indeed that I said that “every fucking week since I came back” as you claim. In a match thread discussing the game I have said nothing unreasonable whatsoever, I’ve just given my views as I see the them. So, if you disagree with anything that I have said in regards to tonight’s poor performance and result then let’s hear it, otherwise YOU wring your knickers out and wind your neck in.

  8. Fans like you are utterly laughable. I could go through match threads from the end of last season when you were creaming your knickers at the opportunity to scream how we were definitely going down and quote the mountain of utter utter drivel you post. Every fucking week since you came back. And would you look at that you’re completely fuckin wrong always! If we had been knocked out then aye it’s a shambles, and quite embarrassed. But tonight doesn’t change anything, we will still go through, and as a result it’s more about minutes in the legs instead of some faded rivalry from the 80s. Just because I’m not “fucking embarrassed” or in the “we are going to get relegated” camp doesn’t mean I can’t see the clear need for signings/improvement. I’m just not seething with rage and mashing my keyboard for every fourth post like you. Now ring out your knickers.

  9. Spot on,the glorified friendly and it's only pre season patter is just an excuse for losing to a lower league team, let's hope alexander isn't using any excuses after that.

  10. Not much in that to disallow that goal

  11. It bloody well is. We are the top flight team. But u would never know. It has been an awful performance regardless of the pitch and opposition. That team will get us relegated. I would start 4 of them. Anymore and out 30 year stay in the top flight will be over.

  12. You're easily embarrassed then. Every year we see the July panic and every year it has zero relevance (good or bad) to the league campaign. Then again, I've seen us get hammered in the League Cup by the likes of Queens Park and Clyde, so not that worried now. We'll win the next win and on we go.

  13. Getting beat by two wonder strikes in a glorified friendly on a pitch we aren’t used to really isn’t that embarrassing.

  15. Usual lack of battle mentality when we come up against lower league opposition let alone a local rival. We can't attempt to play free flowing football against a dogged, battling side. We need to be able to outfight them.

  16. It's amazing how people can watch the same game and see totally different things. 'Only problem in midfield' is not Crawford, although you can be forgiven for forgetting that Cornelius is actually on the park.

  17. The midfield is what it is until we have further additions.
