A wee while back a Kilmarnock fan on P&B asked me to research Kilmarnock's record since they installed the plastic pitch excluding Steve Clarke's time at the club.

Between 14th Aug 2014 and 11th Dec 2021  (excluding Clarke's reign) they won 31 out of 105 matches so their record was pretty poor and certainly no excessive home advantage.  If anything it went the other way with a 29% win ratio.

Their record at home this season isn't too bad but yesterdays results meant it was 4 home matches without a win.

Given their away record is so poor you could of course argue they are such a poor team that without the plastic pitch they would be cut adrift down at the bottom.

Must be some amount of negotiations and I can understand it from both parties.

After getting 6 out of 6 pts and a total different attitude from players we have had .aye but buddies and Jambos were rotten to ...aye but Hammell won 3/4 games..

Could be totally wrong but I don't feel that with kettlewell. I have been impressed so far but I also can see it from boards point of view as they won't want to commit initially to a 2yr deal say.

Deal to end of season with 2yr contract extension if we stay up. If we go down he gets academy job back

    That’s where I am.

It's not his only management experience. He was co-manager when Ross County won the Championship title.

I would imagine Ross county had a hell of a budget for the championship. I seem to remember when they knocked us out of the Scottish cup it was said their playing budget was bigger than ours.

  4. I think we would be crazy to offer a long term contract to someone that’s won two games of football, if he has a better offer elsewhere that’s fine by me. His record at Ross County in the Premiership while in sole charge was 29%. I think he needs to show he can make it at the top level before we start offering two or three year contracts.

Great post. It doesn't have to be extreme thunderdome football or silky expansive soccer; it can be a mix. However, long ball physical football is more likely to bring success to a club of our stature.  Young home grown talent can provide the skill and experienced journeymen the solidity, in very broad terms. Occasionally we can unearth a talented gem from elsewhere but thats the exception. Does our fanbase want attractive open football or decent results?

I think you’ve nailed it Dave

You wanted rid of Hammell fairly early doors.

If its not Kettlewell, which of the other 2 do you prefer?

Personally, Im not enthused by either, so Id give it to Kettlewell, but only until the end of the season.

If he is able to maintain the run and keeps us up he gets it for longer.

Not sure about fairly early doors but certainly a good couple of months ago which I still believe should have happened. Do we know for sure there are only two candidates with the qualities the board feel are appropriate or is this just paper talk ? As with yourself I’m not over enthused by either of the individuals mentioned. If there are other candidates then obviously they need to be considered but it feels a little like last time with Hammell when the boards seemed to jump In rather early with a decision based more on the individuals background with the club than his ability to be a successful manager.

  7. I’d be amazed if both Goodwin and Ross are not shortlisted, I’d be amazed if Lambert is. If I had a choice I would go for Ross who does have a good win percentage of near 50 percent and has had success in both the first division and championship. He got Alloa promoted as he did with St Mirren. He also got Sunderland to the play off finals and was sacked with them in 6th. Hibs could have given him longer, Dundee United was a disaster but that’s Dundee United.

Aye, and you’ve cut right to the heart of the problem.

I don’t subscribe to the theory (admittedly held by many) that the players “downed tools” on Hammell.  Although as the chairman alluded to in his statement of yesterday evening, there were a number of factors that led to Hammell’s demise, I believe that there were essentially two main ones that led to this whole sorry business:-

    1. I believe most of the players at the club at present have been trying. But, the simple truth is, that they are just very poor footballers. Anybody who seriously thinks that this rag and bobtail bunch have the capability of “turning it on and off” when it suits them is greatly deluded.

    2. Some managers have the skill set required to organise, motivate and squeeze a bit of improvement out of such footballers. However, we had a rookie manager in his first job who patently lacked such a skill set and was incapable of learning and acquiring it.

I think when these two factors are put together, it’s not hard to see and understand how we have gotten to where we are.

The Board must now try to ensure that whoever they appoint next has the desire and ability to coach, organise and motivate poor quality players and begin rebuilding through gradually improving the quality of players at the club. The last manager we had who was able to do that was Tommy McLean and that is now almost 30 years ago!

The last thing we needed for a squad of players lacking belief and technical ability was a rookie manager but for some reason the board went down that line. It was pretty much doomed from the off.

I expect a big reaction on Wednesday which I feel is a kick in the teeth for Hammell. No idea if we will win but we shall see

I’m not sure at this point they are capable of a big reaction, the confidence and coaching is none existent. Robinson must be rubbing his hands with glee.

I think anyone suggesting Jack Ross or Jim Goodwin is off their head. Two managers who this season have lost their respective dressing rooms. We need someone who will command respect and make an instant impact. Easier said than done, I know.

They have both had success at previous clubs. Aberdeen have been a basket  case of a club for years so I tend to ignore them, no idea if anyone will work there. Maybe neither will apply but I don’t think they can be discounted. I would rather that than just a list of the usual suspects that have managed for donkeys years and get mentioned every time a job is available.

  11. As I mentioned previously even in my short  time supporting the club I’ve noticed a decline in the quality of players signed and even those we had six years ago took some stick, that has to be the starting point. In my opinion Martin Foyle  was a better judge of a potential player even at our budget level. With the quality of players we have now we need a manager that can work with players of a lower technical ability, keep it simple, stick with the same formation, and concentrate on fitness and organisation, everyone playing in their dedicated position if possible and knowing what’s expected of them, as with the National league down south that alone will see us picking up points. We are never going to have a huge budget but even with our crowds with the right appointments will can survive.
