Cowdenbeath were our 4th round opponents. Half of Lanarkshire descended on Fife that day.

That was it.......knew it was in the far east.....wasn't a great game, did we win 2-0 or something ?

Yes, I think you are right. I went to look at the league table from then and we finished 3 pts behind Hibs (2 pts for a win in those days). Hearts finished behind us in the league but qualified for Europe as runners up in the cup. A final we should have competed in were it not for the afore mentioned disgrace.

Yup, correct. I was 12 when that semi took place and I remember my old man literally dragging me back to the car in fucking tears. I was inconsolable for a week. Didn't help that I went to a school full of H*ns, none of whom had ever seen the inside of a football ground. After disposing of Celtic and Hibs in that cup run (and I think Arbroath if my memory serves), we'd already eliminated two of the top three and were well on the way to disposing of the third until the masons stepped in. That really was a year we should have seen a cup win !

Two games in there which remind me why I hate Rangers so much, 2-0 up in both and cheated, once by their scummy fans and the other by the officials.

Plus (although my memory is a bit hazy on this), the Hibs game where we almost got to Europe for the first time, the one where Willie P lobbed the keeper from 20 yards, I think it finished 3-3 and we finished just behind them in the league.

I might be wrong but I think that Pettigrew lob was in the 2-2 cup quarter final, which was followed up with a replay draw at Easter Road and ended with a 2-1 win at a neutral venue (Ibrox). As you say, that cup run ended with one Masonic ref giving Rangers a penalty when Derek Johnstone stepped on the ball about 2 yards outside the box but managed to land on the penalty spot. The scum went on to win 3-2 and the ref was later found guilty of taking bribes over a European game.

The first game I ever went to was, I think, in the 70-71 season. From 1970 - 1984 (very much my formative Motherwell years) we only had a hoop on the shirt for part of one season, which is no doubt why I'm not as attached to it as some.

Wulie P and Bobby Graham etc. will always be the claret diagonal for me.

First game was 72 for me i think, was the amber kit with claret trim and no band or diagonal with 'MFC' in script rather than a badge.

First Season Ticket was first season of the 10 team premier league (75-76 maybe ??) but went to all home games the season before (excluding OF games which my old man wouldn't take me to until my first ST year).

Surprised at the lack of Champ manager style posts regarding signing a declining player versus the possibility of an ascending one you can develop, does no one play champ man any more? sake

Think that died of as a forum discussion when we had people suggesting we scored more goals with Stevie Woods in goal cause that had happened in Champ Manager.......

That's true, but the first game we played up there was an absolute joke.

Yup, you would think they would be facing some sort of sanction for the nick of their pitch and number of call offs. 20 point deduction sounds about right to me 🙂

I guessed that might be the case when I saw the forecast at the beginning of the week. I hope they do the decent thing and call it off on Friday rather than wait until people start travelling.

Last thing we need is another break.

  8. Taylor Swift was on the news last night because her net worth has reached $1BN. Could this announcement possibly be coincedence ?

On a more serious note (just in case someone thinks the above was serious), I see the amateur accountants and corporate lawyers are out spouting shite again. It's amazing that a few people on here with such a multitude of business and football knowledge haven't bought the club already.

    Think about it logically mate.

Unless someone has been smuggling sackfulls of cash out the back door everything is transacted through bank accounts which requires a minimum of 2 authorisations for cheques and electronic transactions, but more likely 3 and 2 of them would be board members so virtually impossible to hide money trails unless they were all in on some kind of scam which seems to be the basis of the rumours on your fan forums. Amazing how many wannabe accountants there are on them.

Maybe if your club didn't spend as much of your turnover on player salaries then you wouldn't have made the losses you have and try to point the finger and sully a guys reputation.

Have a look at Kieran Maguire on X who gives a good insight into your clubs accounts.

At least theirs has an element of conspiracy theory to it. The best our forum 'experts' could come up with was that we couldn't afford to put the undersoil heating on.

The problem with speculate to accumulate is that it doesnt come risk free.

Look at us under Dempster/McCall. We were spending significantly more then than we are now and we did get higher league positions, the odd cup run and European football. It was good fun, but we made significant losses every season that could not be sustained.

Look at Dundee United, Hibs and Aberdeen. They have all been spending significant sums of cash in order to "speculate to accumulate" and none of them have any better recent records than ourselves.

I think fiscal prudence in our current fan owned set up is not only wise but necessary to ensure our continued existence.

The last couple of seasons havent been easy, but it looks like we will retian our top flight status this season and be in a better position to build and move forward next season.

Given the changes that are coming down the line at executive level, keeping faith in the manager that has been through the process and allowing him to build in what he has done so far seems sensible to me.

    Spot on mate.

A lot of teams have 'shown ambition' and 'speculated'. e.g. Gretna, Livingston, Airdrie, Dundee, Hearts (they might be 3rd now but there's an administration from the 'speculation' years to consider), us under Boyle and Nevin. There must be more that I'l missing, but I don't recall a recent story of a team in Scotland ploughing loads of money into a team, being mega succesful and becoming financially viable from their investment. There is no money to be made in Scottish football for anyone outside the uglies (and look at the financial state one of them is in). Even in the EPL, the sucessful teams are making massive losses and have 'donors' throwing hundreds of millions in which they'll never see again.

The path we're on is the only viable one and to my mind, thats why any 'investment' needs a hell of a lot of scrutiny before moving forward.

Good man 🙂 I'm 100% with you on that 🙂

I'm sure it was mentioned that we 'lacked the ambition' to go for him.

and what do you think ?????????????

Other people suggested it earlier in this thread, so you never know. Along with others such as Duncan Ferguson (and the usual 'he'd sort them oot' crap you get about people like him and Lennon)
