  1. Totally. Even last year we were a Left Midfielder and a Striker short of a full squad. We have to find these players PLUS replace the ones that left. If one or two of these gaps are filled from youth then fair doos but we still need lots of bodies in!!

This guy sounds decent enough, could be our 'Doorman'

Be lookin to do more than open doors I think

  2. Motherwell skipper Stephen Craigan is confident he will not take charge of the club's Europa League opener as chairman John Boyle closes in on a new manager.

The Northern Ireland defender will take charge of training on Monday when the players return for pre-season.

The Steelmen will also find out their Europa League first qualifying round opponents on the same day.

But Craigan does not expect to take the team for the first leg on July 2.

Boyle has been interviewing candidates to replace Mark McGhee, who departed for Aberdeen along with assistant Scott Leitch earlier this month.

Former international managers Steve Staunton and Lawrie Sanchez are thought to be in the frame while ex-Well pair Gary McAllister and Luc Nijholt have both expressed interest.

Craigan told BBC Radio Scotland. "I would expect and hope we would have a manager in place by the end of the week.

"They were talking about bringing in an experienced man but they realised it might only be for two or three days.

"I have spoken to the physio, we have something organised for training for the week and if it only lasts a day, then fine."

The 32-year-old, who completed the first part of his A licence coaching course this summer, added: "I'm in no position to manage a football club and tell players what to do. I still think I can play for another two or three years.

"I'm just there as a frontman until a new man comes in. When you've been at a club for 13 years, albeit over two spells, I'm more than happy to help out as much as I can."

  3. LAWRIE SANCHEZ and Gary McAllister are the latest high profile candidates to be interviewed for the Motherwell job.

Express Sport has learnt that the pair have both held talks with chairman John Boyle this week, as they battle it out to replace Mark McGhee.

It comes on the back of the Express Sport's revelations that former Republic of Irelandmag-glass_10x10.gif boss Steve Staunton had discussions with Boyle, on a trip north, earlier this week.

Boyle is keen to avoid going down the route of an experienced Scottish name and has already received more than 35 applications for the position.

McAllister is the fans' favourite but the Well hierarchy have reservations because their former midfielder turned them down last time around.

Since then the ex-Coventy City boss has seen his stock drop after an indifferent spell at Leedsmag-glass_10x10.gif United.

Meanwhile, Sanchez has since denied his interest in the job publicly but is still keen to land the position, after being sacked by Premiership Fulham.

The Englishman has previously managed Wycombe, Irish league side Sligo and the Northern Irish national team, where he coached Well captain Stephen Craigan.

Sanchez and McAllister were unavailable for comment yesterday.

Ironically it could turn out to be an interesting battle between two halves of Ireland and the fact Staunton was McAllister's No. 2 at Leeds.

Boyle was still talking applications yesterday and will also speak to Scottish Cup winning defender Luc Nijholt about the job.

The Dutchman has previously been assistant to Co Adriaanse at Red Bull Salzburg, where they won the Austrian title.

Well return for pre-season on Monday, with skipper Craigan asked to take temporary charge, although the club hope to have their new manager before they kick off their Europa League campaign on July 2.

  4. According to Sky Sports McCalllister is ready to snub the job for a second time due to lack of funds so that one is out the window i'm afraid. We will have nothing to spend unless we sell first.

If its true then its got to be Nijholt.

  5. But McGhee said: "Stephen knows I would like to bring him to Aberdeen. Scott Leitch (McGhee's assistant) is meeting with Stephen in Glasgow this weekend where we will talk to him about it further. Apparently he has been offered a very attractive contract from Hearts so there is competition for people like Stephen Hughes."

McGhee admits the Dons may struggle financially to offer Hughes as much as the other clubs who are chasing the signature of the former Rangers player.

"I hope the fact I am here is a factor for Stephen," McGhee said. "But young players like Stephen Hughes, who have a young family, are entitled to try to provide for their family and therefore try to get the best deal possible.

"Working with me again won't be at the top of his list of reasons for choosing a club but if there comes a point where we are neck and neck with someone else then hopefully because it is me that will sway it."

  6. "I have always said that if the timing was right I would love to go back and manage Motherwell," he told the Scottish Daily Express.

"I won a Scottish Cup there and had a great time and the club will always have a very special place in my heart.

"I still look out for Well's results and have a lot of friends in Scotland so the manager's job would be a dream for me.

"I have picked up a lot of experience in Holland and working with Co Adriaanse, who is a top coach, and I definitely want to go in to management again in my own right.

"If that was at Motherwell it would be a dream come true for me, especially as the club are also in Europe next season."

  7. Here is why Scott didn't take the job.

But Leitch has his sights set on succeeding McGhee at Aberdeen and believes his only chance of doing so is by impressing in the supporting role.

Leitch said: "They offered me the job at Motherwell and it was a really hard decision as I have spent many years there.

"But when Mark said I had the opportunity to go to Aberdeen with him I decided that was what I wanted to do.

"I probably would not get the opportunity to be Aberdeen manager unless I was here, working hard and showing them what I can do.

"If I can make the club appreciate what I do then I know I am giving myself the chance of one day being the Aberdeen manager.

"There is an element of selfishness from myself, but my long-term goal is to be the best manager I can possibly be and working with Mark can only help me.

"John Boyle and Motherwell have been fantastic to me as a player and coach and it was really difficult to turn down the manager's job at Fir Park.

"But I have a drive to do well here.

"Hopefully Mark and I will be a big success here and if Mark does go on to bigger and better things then hopefully I will have shown I am capable of taking on a job like this."

Leitch, who won the Challenge Cup in his one season with Ross County, is relishing the challenge of working with new players under a new regime and is eager to begin work with the players when pre-season begins on July 1.

He added: "Mark and I have worked extremely well in the last two years and I would like to continue the learning process with him for the next few years anyway.

"To come to a club like Aberdeen is a fantastic opportunity for myself. When I went back to Motherwell I knew all the players so it was an easy transaction for me.

"Coming here, working with a different board, with Willie Miller and for fantastic fans who demand success is an exciting challenge."

  8. Anyone heard of this guy.

IRELAND'S rising young management star Pat Fenlon last night declared his interest in landing a top-flight job in Scotland.

The 40-year-old, who last year led Bohemians to the League of Ireland and FAI Cup double in his first season in charge, has masterminded his side's surge to the top of the Eircom Premier League as they look to maintain the title.

Fenlon's stock has risen so much that a clutch of teams in England are ready to step in to snatch the Republic of Ireland Under-23 boss away.

Falkirk and Motherwell are also eyeing candidates to take over from John Hughes and Mark McGhee respectively and they could look to a man who has been earmarked as a future successor to Irish national boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

Fenlon told Record Sport: "I'm under contract here at Bohemians and I'm loving working here on a daily basis.

"This club have been great to me and I have so much I want to do with this football club.

"I have a good relationship with the board and we are in the middle of the season so we have to stay focused on the job in hand here.

"But if a club from overseas comes in then I would have to hear what they say if Bohemians gave them permission to speak to me.

"I'm a young manager but everyone has ambitions to go and better themselves so if there was interest in me I would have to look at that.

"But any club would have to approach my own club here before I even considered leaving."
