Early days of construction on the Davie Cooper Stand / demolition of the classic frontage.

These are brilliant (although sad to see the turnstiles go). Any more from that era? Or any era?

Me, great  player.

I think he scored a couple of beauties in the 6-3 win at Dens in the mid-70s, although my memory is a bit flaky.

25 October 1975

I remember Willie Pettigrew scoring 4 in that 6-3 game but can't remember the other scorers. Just checked " Well Again" and it was Ian Taylor who got the other 2 that day. Jim McCabe left earlier that season without making an appearance and signed for Stranraer.

In May 1886, Glencairn FC and Alpha FC (the works team from the Alpha Steam Crane & Engine Works) merged to form Motherwell FC. Giving youth a chance since 1886. How young is the player with the ball?

The youngster at the front is 14-year-old John Taylor “Bug” Young. A Motherwell Times article of 15th October 1954 confirms he played football for the Alpha Works FC, who operated at Roman Road from 1881-1886.  The article states he was, in October 1954, one of only 2 surviving members of the original Motherwell FC team of 1886 when Glencairn FC and Alpha had merged to form Motherwell FC.  The newspaper article confirms he was "known as Bug Young" to older supporters.  John was born on the 4th of October 1869 and he is first mentioned in the Scranton US census of 1st June 1870 as being 8 months old. He died at 709 South Second Street, West Monroe,  Louisiana on 27th December 1957.
