2013 - 2014 Ins & Outs

I think it's ludicrous to imply he was involved in the team because his Dad happened to play in the side Rangers side as Stuart McCall. That barely warrants a response.

But what I would say is that rightly or wrongly there was certainly a feeling, if you want to call it that, that Hateley seemed to have a status in the side that perhaps wasn't quite warranted. I recollect once or twice he was handed the captain's armband during a game when the captain went off. I remember thinking it a little curious at the time how high up the pecking order he appeared to be. For a good too while there seemed to be something of an unwritten rule that he would be the man to take almost all the set pieces.

Then there is the Hateley Snr factor. Perhaps it shouldn't really come into it but the fact is that many Motherwell fans find his father utterly loathsome and I think he was seen as guilty by association. In a similar way because of who his father was I believe he enjoyed a press that sometimes bordered on the undeserved. If it had been say Steven Saunders who had been in his shoes for the last four years he certainly wouldn't have been as well regarded by the Scottish football media as Hateley was.

So I think there's been a mixture of things that have contributed to a general lack of love for him.

Evidently though he was well thought of by the management.

And why not?

Four years where he hardly missed a game through injury or suspension - a manager's dream. Whilst the media perception that he was some shit shot set-piece specialist was overplayed, so to was the belief that every corner or free-kick was wasted. The truth is much more middle ground. He did have a really good number of assists even if he had days where his corners and free-kicks were utterly apalling. He was a generally sound SPL standard full-back who also gave us an option in midfield when the occasion arose.

I actually think he might well have done pretty well with us had he hung around. Certainly if we were to deploy him as right wing-back, whilst no Chris Humphrey, would certainly offer something more going forward than we have on the right currently, and with three central defenders would have less defensive duties to worry about, where he could sometimes be suspect.

Given the chance if it were in our budget I would have him back. I'm fairly sure that's an unrealistic proposition however given finances and our weight of numbers in that part of the squad.

Kilmarnock though just seems something of a face saving exercise. A reality check and a return to the comfort zone of the SPL after discovering perhaps he isn't as sought after as his father and his father's cronies in the media would have him believe. What can he do there that he hasn't already done or would still have been able to at Fir Park?

I don't feel hatred for him at all. It's a little amusing that he didn't make it to Ibrox certainly, particularly since one of his old team-mates did. No I actually feel a little sorry him. He's been poorly advised and is suffering for that now.

There's coventry into administration, anyone fancy bringing jennings back?

Liquidated means they are no more.

He was released weeks ago as they couldn't afford him no? As much as I'd love to see him back, he wanted out of Scottish football (from the horses mouth), budget done in other areas and where would we fit them all in to our midfield?

Best player on the park when they played at Bramall Lane earlier this year.

he said on twitter that he's on the M6, he better be stopping in Motherwell and not in Ibrox

Unless the player leaves in completely acrimonious circumstances, like Pearson for example, there is really no reason to get on a players back. Its pretty embarrassing hearing some of the stuff on here, and last night towards Nicky Law. Law is one of the best players I've seen in claret and amber, and hateley would be welcome in any SPL team outside Celtic.

These are guys who are at a club where although successful on the pitch in relative terms, we cannot offer big wages or crowds. I don't blame any player going down south. If its a gamble, like hateley has obviously taken and it doesn't work out, that's life or bad advice or bad decision making. It doesn't call for a complete rewrite of history.

I don't quite get the hatred from some people towards Tom Hateley. He was a good solid player for us who was consistent throughout his time at Fir Park.

I think some of it stems from the fact it seems like if you have any dealings with him off the park he comes across as an arrogant cock who thinks hes too good for us.

he may have a pompus accent, but he was more than nice when I spoke to him on a few occasions

and was more than willing to take time out of his own time, not Motherwells, to come and see my boy when he got knocked down

as a player, I wish hed stayed - ive said that several time, as a person - I cant agree with you either!!

said it before but if Hateley's father hadn't played for Rangers he'd never have got the stick he gets from a chunk of our fans. Very decent full back in an excellent team who very rarely let the team down over the few years he was here.

Our loss would be Killie's gain although it does seem very much a sideways if not downward move for the boy.

The few occasions this happened, it was probably due to having more appearances for the club than any of the other players on the park, rather than a status thing.

For a good too while there seemed to be something of an unwritten rule that he would be the man to take almost all the set pieces.

Set piece takers are down to management to decide. If the manager wants one player to take all the set pieces, then that player is going to follow that instruction.

It's a little amusing that he didn't make it to Ibrox certainly, particularly since one of his old team-mates did.

This "daddy wants his boy to move to Ibrox" keeps coming up, but I don't recall either Hateley or his father ever stating this was their intended move. It seems people view this as fact purely because of who his father is.

I think some of it stems from the fact it seems like if you have any dealings with him off the park he comes across as an arrogant cock who thinks hes too good for us.

On the few occasions I've had any dealings with him, I thought he seemed a polite and quiet kind of guy, who was happy to chat to any Motherwell fans, and seemed to genuinely enjoy playing for the club.

Whilst I don't doubt some people may have had run-ins with him, as I'm sure many fans have with players, it seems some people are basing their dislike of him on some pretty poor reasoning.

Hatelely was a good player for us and anyone who thinks otherwise has a problem. We offered him terms to stay and he chose to try his luck elsewhere, that's his prerogative. His dad has fuck all to do with anything. If he ends up at killie then that's his problem, not ours.

Some folk take it way too personally when a player leaves. You have supported the club all your life, they work for the club during the term of their contract. That's how it works and it isn't going to change.

if we had to bring common sense into this none of us would be here. We'd all have packed it in and spent our money & time more wisely long ago and wouldn't have the remotest emotional attachment to MFC or Scottish Football whatsoever.

All of us are here because we're mental

I saw that about Hollis and Gunnar.

To be fair Hollis did little wrong the other night.

But....I would have thought the idea in replacing Randolph would be to get a number 1 who was/is better than Hollis.

Either Hollis has raised his game, now he knows there is a real chance of being numero uno or the club have made a booboo with Gunnar.......

Time will tell on this one, but looks like we are going with Hollis until he makes a mess of things. I just want the best man between the sticks and if that is Hollis then I am happy with that.

But Gunnar has the better song so in my view he's in

So many new songs to learn this year.

Do managers/clubs not understand the pressure they put on the average fan with such poorly arranged contractual management!

Especially liked the John Sutton one on Thursday night. Thats gonna be a classic.....if he can score hunners of goals!
