The only way he will get to select another team will be on ‘Football Manager’, even then, he would probably fall out with his computer. He will be remembered by some as a flawed genius who couldn't get on with anyone. I really hope his people skills have improved, or buying a car off him could end up being a nightmare. Jim Gannon didn't have guts to tell me I wasn't in his plans, says ex-Motherwell striker Steven McGarrySteven McGarry admits he rated Jim Gannon as a manager - but can't find many kind things to say about his former boss as a person. The ex-Motherwell midfielder wouldn't have minded being told he wasn't good enough in the Irishman's opinion. In fact, that's what he wanted after being shunned all season. But McGarry insists Gannon didn't have the guts to tell him to his face. Instead, he resorted to pinning notices on the dressing-room wall with his name on a list of players to train with the kids. After sealing a dream move to Australian A League side Perth Glory yesterday, the 30-year-old revealed his old gaffer failed to earn the respect of anyone inside Fir Park. McGarry was appalled at how some of Well's staff were treated by Gannon. So much so, he voiced his concerns with the club's general manager Leeann Dempster. Along with the likes of captain Stephen Craigan, Keith Lasley, Marc Fitzpatrick and Darren Smith, McGarry was ignored by the man who lasted just six months in Lanarkshire. But he believes it was his personality - not his playing ability - that Gannon had a problem with. The midfielder told Record Sport: "The way he treated people, spoke to people and spoke about other people was bang out of order. "I thought he was a very decent coach and manager, he knew his stuff football-wise. But the other side of Gannon let him down. "There were a few of us not featuring like myself, Keith and Stephen. It was clear where I stood because I didn't play one minute of SPL football under him. "He made me train with the youth team and the way he went about his business was pretty shocking. I just didn't like the way he treated people. If someone doesn't fancy me as a footballer I can handle that, it's happened to me before. "I don't know why he took a dislike to me as I played in the first four Europa League games. "He didn't like my personality. I'm a bit of a character in the dressing-room and like to have a laugh. I train hard and play hard but I like to have a carry-on with the boys at the right time. "I don't think he liked that side of me. I went to see him several times and he told me I was part of his plans. That was a blatant lie - he was just covering his own back. "He didn't have the guts to tell me to my face that I was to train with the youth team. "Instead he started putting up notices in the dressing-room of who was training where. "My name was next to the appren-tices and I was to report to Gordon Young. I went to tell him I was a professional footballer so I thought I should be training along with the first team. "I wanted a reason but he didn't have one. He said there were too many training with the first team but that was a lie as well. "He couldn't tell me to my face. If he had done, I'd have handled that. I wanted him to say 'Steven, you're not in my plans' but he wasn't brave enough." Despite being forced out of the first-team picture at Fir Park, McGarry refused to let it affect him. But he's adamant his old boss was hell-bent on making his life a misery before he was eventually bulleted by Fir Park chairman John Boyle on December 28. Ironically, the former St Mirren and Ross County star was brought in from the cold for interim manager Craig Brown's only game in charge so far - the 1-0 defeat by Hearts at Tynecastle. But by that stage McGarry had already decided to quit the club and start a new adventure in Western Australia. He added: "I remember one day Gannon was jogging back from the training ground and we were in the mini-bus driving past him. "One of the boys he'd signed from England threw some water over him as he ran by. It was just for a bit of banter, a laugh. "But when we got back to the ground, his assistant PeterWard came and told us we were out of order. The gaffer was raging and wanted to speak to the culprit. "The guy held his hands up. But Gannon asked him, 'Was McGarry or Craigan involved?' The boy told him it was nothing to do with us, he was the guilty party. "But Gannon told him that if either me or Crags had anything to do with the incident, he wanted to know. "He was trying desperately to stir things up, looking for any way to fine me or give me a written warning. "It got me down but I tried not to let it affect me too much. I've played under managers like Mark McGhee, Alex Smith, Tony Fitzpatrick and Terry Butcher. These guys all rated me as a player so I wasn't going to let Gannon wreck my confidence or my career. "He didn't give a damn about my career - the only person he cared about was himself. He wasn't even interested in his own staff, all that was important was looking after himself. You have to earn respect and he didn't with the people at Motherwell." McGarry is now excited about the prospect of a change of fortune and lifestyle in Australia. He said: "It's a great opportunity for me at Perth Glory - it's a new start and the weather and lifestyle here are great. You don't have to an eye for a player to go to an English Premiership club and find two good players to come in on loan. Ruddy and Jutkiewicz were the best players by a mile that Gannon brought in. Jennings was a good player but would any one really say Humphrey, Coke, Hateley and Moutaouakil were great players unmatched by players brought in before or since? Hardly. Everyone knows about the atmosphere at Fir Park for the OF visits - plainly not the time to hand out youth team debuts. If you are still carrying a torch for that prick take a look at yourself, I cannot think of any Well manager, even Malpas, who put his own weird agenda over the good of the club and it's fans and sent us out to lose.
