There is a danger of apathy setting in, the team could go a long way to helping fight that with a win on friday. The league is all we have going so staying in the European hunt is really essential or as you pointed out the other day it could go the way of the Malpas season.

We should still feel that the chase for Europe is massive, but I think our approach to Europe this year has sucked the enthusiasm out of that. How different it might have been if the away leg against Kuban Krasnodar was treated like the second of half of a cup-final, instead it seems to have been approached like a pre-season Friendly.

The highs of qualifying for Europe only exist if we are giving it a damn good crack, even if we are two goals down. Don't know about anyone else, but our approach this year has scunnered me.

Dont flatter yourself m8., would motherwell accept the "high jinks" damage caused by away fans at fir park? No they wouldnt, so hamilton should laugh it off eh?

m8? to_take_umbrage.gif

Motherwell didn't accept after the recent league cup tie with Aberdeen (where damages far outweighed any alleged damages on Saturday) nor would I expect them to and Hamilton shouldn't laugh it off either. That wasn't the point though and fine well you know it.

I don't recall the Daily Retard brandishing that report all over their back pages, Sellik won as expected The Rangers got by with a little help from thier friends, all very predictable, so they needed something to fill the back pages

If Stuart McCunt had an ounce of decency he would fall on his sword and fuck off without a payoff. Im fucking sick of the consistent pish dribbling from him,he's like a ginger mulleted dialysis machine.

2 years ago In the run up to the cup final he persisted in this "resting players" pish,we lost 5 of out last 6 shipping 20odd goals in the process, then didnt show up for the final! Said wasnt due to lack of effort etc & we would learn. Last seasons disgrace at Ibrox, said it wasnt due to lack of effort etc & we would learn. Last seasons joke Euro games, said it wasnt due to lack of effort etc & we would learn. This season there was the debacle in Kuban, said it wasnt due to lack of effort or attitude etc etc etc. Rested players yet again for Abdn cup game,we got pumped in league and then out the cup but guess what? It wasnt due to lack of effort or attitude & we would learn.

So less than 6 weeks later we have Albion Rovers in the cup but its ok weve had nearly 3 years of learning and there definately wont be a problem with attitude & effort! so this should be simple eh? Nope,he doesnt even show them the respect to fill our subs bench,"rests" our captain & top scorer "rests" the kid who was apparently first name on the team sheet last week for a fucking u-20 game, fails to change tactics when were clearly struggling to break them down and were out and now staring financial disaster in the face. But hey,it wasnt a lack of effort or attitude! Its just that we apparently dont have the quality to break down a part-time team at the bottom of scottish footballs lowest division. Thats fucking frightening!

Time and again in cup games, wether it be europe, league cup or scottish cup we rest players, fuck about with tactics, make a cunt of it and go out with a whimper.Cup games that apparently go a long way to filling holes in our budget & running costs. Well the buck stops with the manager!

Why cant we learn from these problems that occur time and again? Why do we rest players time & again? Why do we chop & change tactics time and again? Why do we repeatedly lose cup games when we put in so much effort and show such good attitude?

You were embarrassed by sat? As you fucking should be as well as ashamed, disgusted and countless other things. Never mind more empty promises ,just fuck off!

Personal abuse aside, all fair enough. It's been a disappointing 4 months out of McCall's 2 years in charge but honestly, without him there's every chance we wouldn't have had a cup final or games in Europe to even fuck up.

I'm not saying we do or don't need to change manager just yet i'll see how the team reacts to a soul crushing defeat like saturdays, granted things look grim with performances recently and the signings this year have been poor at best and as much as losing to Albion stung me i think its just a bit to early for the McCall out talk. Just look at the alternatives who would be willing to take the job if McCall was to leave, Jimmy Calderwood, John Hughes, Kenny Shiels and probably even Mr 4-6-0 himself Craig Levien ! All guys who i personally don't want to see at Fir Park. Things are shite just now but i'll stick with McCall for the time being although i totally agree he needs to turn things round and quickly.

That's it exactly.

Aye, it would be exciting to get a new manager in with fresh ideas, but the reality is that in the last 7 years we've been very very lucky/clever in pulling candidates out of 'left field'. With the wages we have to offer, it's always a huge gamble with any manager and I think there is an assumption that we'll get it right every time. Would folk be happy with a manager that gets us decent cup runs but we're stuck in mid-table mediocrity each season? That's the kind of manager our finances could potentially get.

We've been lucky with what McGhee, Brown and Mccall have brought to the club. It's simply far too early to be calling for his head.

Witty.

I'm sure McCall would point out the fact he was the one who got us to our first Scottish Cup final in 20 years, making him I think maybe only the 4th or 5th manager to do so in the club's history? Something which you failed to give him credit for(a recurring theme in your post). Should we have expected to beat Celtic? No. Could we have played better? Yes. However Randolph wasn't exactly overworked and Gunning was about 6 inches from drawing us level. We also put in a tremendous display against Rangers in the League Cup semi when he first took over which you seem to have missed out.

Last seasons 'joke' Euro games? You mean like Panathinaikos? Where Christodoulopoulos, who opened the scoring in both matches, cost them over 3 million euros? The team that had Boumsong a French Internationalist and former Lyon, Newcastle and Juventus player at centre-back where we had Simon Ramsden? I'll bet Boumsong earned about as much in those few weeks between those two legs as Ramsden earned all last season. The gulf in resources was astronomical and although I never made it to Greece I was at Fir Park and thought we gave a very good account of ourselves.

As for Levante, did they not finish like 5th or 6th in one of the best leagues in world football? I was actually very proud of our efforts in the 2nd game, a young Motherwell team with the likes of Kerr, Page, Cummins, Hethrington & Carswell all in the starting line up gave a fantastic account of themselves. Higdon had a goal questionably ruled out for offside and Page missed a glorious chance as well at 0-0. Only a goal in about the 75th minute separated the sides on the night and finally killed off the tie. They were a very good side that went on to reach the last 16 of the Europa League.

Im sure Stuart McCall would also point out that he was the the one that led us to those 2nd and 3rd place finishes that got us to those European ties.

The Ibrox cup tie was bad, aye. So was Aberdeen in the League Cup and Saturday was undoubtedly the worst of the lot.

However none of McCall's cup defeats before Saturday, however disappointing, were any worse than some of the other shambolic cup upsets recent managers have endured.

McGhee out at home to 1st division, nine man Dundee. Gannon pumped three zip in Paisley. Paw Broon papped out to 1st Division ICT. Malpas turned over by 1st division St Johnstone at Fir Park.

None of the above where really here long term though. So what about Butcher's tenure? Another long serving manager, good old Terry. Given much credit on here for the way he fires up ICT for those big games, something McCall should take note of according to some on here. Butcher however oversaw plenty of shite cup displays in his time at Fir Park including us getting pumped 5-1 in a cup final, papped out by part time Forfar, knocked out at home to 1st division ICT and getting scudded 3-0 by 1st division St.Mirren at Love street.

And during those times under any of those managers we were nowhere near as consistent in the league as we have been under McCall. Bad cup results seem to be in our DNA sadly and McCall isn't the first manager at Motherwell to struggle in cup competitions. Sadly, I doubt he'll be the last. Admittedly Saturday was the worst of the lot. However a sacking offence? Absolutely not.

I'm no McCall lover, especially at present but your post is horrendously weighted in an anti McCall manner and gives him absolutely no credit for some of the excellent work he has done at our club. He's far from perfect, in fact he's quite flawed. And if you could find me a manager that could deliver sexy fitba, consistent high league finishes, qualify for the group stages of a European Competition and win a few cups all on a shoe string budget then I'd be all for it and would pay for McCall's taxi out of here.

However until such times Stuart McCall is our manager and will be for the foreseeable future, like it or lump it.

While I agree with virtually all you say in this post. The problem with this result is McColl sent out the message to the team he picked IE: leaving out his captain and top goal scorer, leaving out U20 players from even the substitutes, only picking 5 substitutes. This can only be interpreted as bad management and we'll win this easily. When a team goes onto the pitch with this attitude they can never lift their game if things go against them, and this is what happened.

I don't think it's like it or lump it, I agree with what has been said but the defeat and the manner of it on sat may just be the final straw. As a manager his job is a top 6 Finnish, a decent cup run and to sell a player a year. Top 6 Finnish ok we look set there, cup runs gone and as for selling a player we will probably take what's offered for any player. Finances will decide whether he his here or not IMO and it ain't looking good.

What McCall HAS done is gone ,its what he's doing now that matters .Much along the same lines as the old chestnut " a teams only as good as there last result " he ain't doing to well. League position I hear some say ,sitting nicely in the top six ,Nae chance of going down ...mmm I wonder.
