Makes you wonder why we bother with a pre-season.

If you can't see that he was fitter in his last game than in his first, you need to take off your FatHigdon specs.

I was at his first game and his last game. He was walking about the park for most of the the final game and at one point in the first half chased a ball when he was offside and was so gubbed he was still offside when we won the ball back and hoofed it back up the park. Even Skippy never got caught offside twice in 30 seconds.

There was also his embarassing cameo in the semi final and the shocker against St Johnstone. It's possible he actually got less fit.

If we were able to get Ciftci and O,Halloran fir free we would be getting £2,000,000 of talent who have went backwards recently ,but a pre season with Robbo might make all the difference. To me as long as wages affordable it’s worth the risk .

Like Curtis Main, both fall into the category of talent players that are normally well above our price league, but dropped back through lack of form or fitness. Ciftci is not an unknown quantity to SR and if he believes he can bring the best out of him, I'm all for it. Ciftci certainly offers skill and vision we don't have. O'Halloran has been on our radar for a while. He offers pace and goals.

My only query is are they prepared to take a big drop in wages for regular football and resurrect their careers?

Why do you think he isn't fit? The guy was  training with our first team for months and isn't any fitter than when he got there.

If he is doing all the training with the club that the other players do then he must be doing something wrong away from the club.

I see you are still persisting with this "he's a fat bastard and needs to diet" pish it's Nadir's turn now but I recall you spouted the same shite against Higdon the year he finished top scorer and won the player of the year title in the league, so why not wrap it until you have something sensible to add.

On the subject of Cadden, I think we should be fair to the boy and sell him in the summer.
Firstly, whilst he has always given 100%, I believe that he has not progressed by our need to play him at wing back (he is not a natural defender and cannot head the ball).  Unless Robinson decides to play 4-4-2 with Cadden on the right of midfield or 4-3-3 as we played in the second half on Saturday, we will not get the best out of him.  Ultimately we may see the loss of a prize asset and see one of our finest  talent not fulfill their potential.
Secondly, he will be mixing with players on the Scotland trip of most of whom will be of no better talent the him but all of which will be earning vastly more which will come out as the players socialise.  On return I suspect this plus the influence of his snake oil salesman (= agent) will push for a move.
On the assumption that he will get a cap at some point over the two games, the best outcome for both club and player would be a big money transfer
I think by the time he come back off internuduty he will be heading to Aberdeen

If I was Chris Cadden I'd be looking to leave Motherwell this summer.

I think he's an absolutely cracking boy and despite his limitations a very useful player for Motherwell who I'd be delighted to have here for as long as possible. It's painfully clear however that he's at best stagnated since he burst onto the scene 2 and a half years ago. If he harbours any ambitions of being more than a decent Scottish Premiership player then he's going to have to improve several areas of his game- namely his technique, decision making and final ball. I'm not sure playing Right Back in a Stephen Robinson 3-5-2 is the best way to remedy this.

This isn't a slight on Robinson- who I'm a massive fan of- and finding a formation that suits the rest of the team, sees us safe from relegation, in 2 cup finals and rock solid defensively is obviously more important than shoehorning Chris Cadden into his best position. It's also testament to how admirably Cadden has performed out of position all season.

Again, from a Motherwell point of view, I'd love Cadden to stick around but I'm not sure if it's the best course of action for the sake of his career.

While I never agreed with Steelboys berating of Higdon, its painfully awful to me that there is 'something' wrong with Ciftci in terms of his fitness...to be no fitter in his last game, than his first for us suggests that he either doesnt train properly, doesnt eat properly or there is something genetic holding him back.

He has just been called up to the full Scotland squad, been a first team regular all season and played in two cup finals...

But, he's signed a contract until 2019.  It might well be that he leaves this summer but it would have to suit the club as well.

Not to white knight Ciftci here but the version we had this season probably needs a bit of context.

He's clearly not a gym bro in the same way that many of our squad are and it's fair comment to say that he's erm, not blessed with natural fitness but it's worth mentioning that Rodgers left him out of Celtic's pre-season training camp last summer, he didn't sign for Plymouth until 21st August so missed their pre-season as well given their league season started 5th August. By all accounts Adams signed him for Plymouth and had no idea what to do with him.

He picked up an injury playing for Plymouth's u20s in mid-October and his spell with them amounted to 8 appearances and 537 mins of first team football in 6 months. When he signed for us he had 19 minutes of football since mid-September.

His two loan spells previous to Plymouth amounted to: 373 mins (Pogoń Szczecin) and 883 mins at Eskişehirspor where he had 4 goals in 12 appearances. His time and lack of opportunities as a Celtic player is pretty well documented. So the upshot of that is you're talking about a player who hasn't had regular first team football since he left United in July 2015.

So, that's a player who arrived at Fir Park with no pre-season to speak of save kicking about with Celtic's u20s last summer and has had no regular first team football for going on 3 years. It's probably fair to say that his fitness would have been a pretty low base when he arrived (and probably still is as a result). The St Johnstone game earlier in the month was his first start for us since the end of February (so going on 2 months).

The "fat Turkish waiter" shouts were still with him at United but I don't think anyone on here would deny that he was a very effective player for them. Similarly it's surely no coincidence that his best form tied in with him playing regularly and being a valued member of the squad/team. Which is presumably what Robinson is offering him if it's true that we're in for him.

My take is that he's clearly a naturally talented (if not a naturally fit) footballer who needs to be playing regularly to get the best out of him. While we've got plenty players who will graft and put in a shift we don't have many gifted players around the squad and such are our resources the pool of players with natural ability who will be accessible and want to come to Fir Park is going to pretty limited and there are undoubtedly going to be caveats there.

Long story short, I'm well up for us signing him.

Do you not think it's strange that he never thought it might be a good idea to get himself in shape at any point during that time?

If your getting paid 8 grand a week for essentially nothing it's surely not that hard to find 90 minutes a day to train.

Although if I was getting paid 8 grand a week for doing nothing, I wouldn't be finding 90 minutes a day to train either.

there is as well a difference between being fit and being match fit, the fitness required for 90 minutes of 11 a side football is completely different to normal fitness. Even more so for a player who hasn't went through a proper pre season, it took Scott Mcdonald the best part of 6 months of week in week out football before he looked anywhere near match fit. If the chance does arise to sign him, absolutely we should be taking it.

Have you seen him play over the last 2 years? He's not progressed at all since his first run in team.

I want Ciftci signed up.  There's a terrific footballer there and Robbo will be able to get the work rate out of him.

Having grafters and honest lads is great and an essential part of a squad, but you need guys, mavericks even, to add that bit of quality that the others don't have.  It's these guys people pay to watch.

It will be glorious to watch him score us the winner in the 2019 SC Final against Celtic.

There are different types of players, a different era, but Andy Ritchie didn’t look fit at Morton, scored a few though

It's probably something that's inherent in football culture in this country where if someone doesn't run about enough they are deemed to be unfit/lazy/disinterested. There's something about players that have the ability but look like they're not breaking sweat that I love watching. Obviously different standard but Berbatov is one of my favourite players ever and he rarely looked like he gave a toss, but still played the game like it was the easiest thing in the world.

The trouble is, there are generally two types of players who don't run about a lot: those who make their every touch count, and those who usually end up giving the ball away.
