The transfer window falls within EU law because of the following decision in the European Court of Justice (for basketball, but applies across all sports): "it established the principle that the restriction may be justified as late season transfers could substantially alter the sporting strength of teams in the course of the championship and thus call into question the proper functioning of sporting competition. It can therefore be concluded that a proportionate restriction on when a player can be transferred is compatible with EU law." One to replace a player that has left is understandable but I thought our signings this summer were aimed at helping us cope with injuries. Robinson clearly sees McHugh as a midfielder, regardless of how admirably he performs at centre-back. We had: Hartley and Donnelly available at the weekend at centre-half. If we're playing as a 3, we need at least another one, which we have in Aldred, and some cover, which we have in Maguire, and another in Mbulu. Given Mbulu has predominantly played in under 23s football down south, it's unlikely he'll be ready to step right in. So in short, no it doesn't reflect badly. HTH. Robinson claimed he went with a four on Sunday due to only having two centre-halves. I think McHugh is a better defender than midfielder, but as I say, that's very much how he seems to be viewed. Donnelly will be used throughout the back-four/five over the season as well, I'd guess, as he's been highlighted as being a versatile option. I can see the sense in that given the issue we had last season when we lost 4 or 5 players, and we've probably achieved that aim. We seem to have gone overboard with defenders, though, expecially once Dunne is fit. And it looks like we are dependent on Tanner coming back for any creativity up top. For me Robinson is really backing himself into a corner here with his signings. I’m sorry, but in my opinion that is nonsense. We can, and have played 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 depending on which way you look at it, we can and have played 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. We can also play 4-2-3-1 if we wanted to with Frear, Turnbull, Cadden.
