Yea another player away before we really get to see him in action but nothing club can do to stop it . We are at least getting a fee upfront with add ons same as  McKinstry by sounds of it . We must be doing something right so kudos to the academy for their great work .

We signed Willie Pettigrew from East Kilbride Thistle (a team he joined because he wasn't deemed good enough in a brief spell at Hibs).

Dougie Arnott was signed from Pollok Juniors was he not?

Sometimes a club just fits and everyone has to start somewhere.

Reece McAlear has left Motherwell to join Norwich City on a permanent basis, subject to international clearance.

The 17-year-old will join the East Anglian side after 13 months as a professional at Fir Park.

Motherwell tried to secure the player on a longer contract during the summer, but it was clear that any extended stay beyond May 2020 was extremely unlikely.

Despite that, several approaches from Norwich were rejected, before terms were finally agreed on a deal which gives the club a short-term cash injection, coupled with the ability to claim future money should the player develop further.

“It is very much our hope that the player development pathway we provide at Motherwell results in our academy graduates progressing to professional level, then eventually into the first team,” chief executive Alan Burrows explained.

“We had high hopes for Reece. He was getting closer and closer and indeed, played several first-team friendly matches during pre-season. We had positive conversations with the player, his family and his representatives about extending his stay.

“However, it was clear this was an opportunity Reece wanted to explore and probably would’ve explored, when his contract expired at the end of the season, had we not managed to agree a deal with Norwich now.

“This will see the club secure cash in advance, as well as maintaining some economic rights should his career continue to develop.

“It also demonstrates clearly the excellent work of our scouting and coaching staff, and further emphasises Motherwell as the club for young footballers to progress.”

Everyone at Motherwell FC would like to thank Reece for his time at Fir Park and wish him every success in his future career.

To clarify my point I have no problem with the signing and will give the boy every chance to shine and hopefully he will turn out good . My point was about Robbo saying he was not signing any more squad players as had to be a starter if any new signings , and obviously we all agree Manzinga does not seem to fit into that definite starter mode at the moment . He may turn out to be another Kipre and just needs a platform to perform and maybe will do very well but definitely looks line another squad player  currently though could become a regular starter in time . I think Robbo was definitely not meaning him when he made this comment and we possibly might have another striker in mind to come in .Time will tell

More than anything, I think this is just circumstances changing a bit. With Johnson away, we appear to have picked up a low cost forward option who seems to be better suited to how we play while still keeping space and money for the “starter,” that was mentioned.

He certainly was.  Reading recently about a Motherwell squad from the early 70's and pretty much every player came through the Junior ranks, even from teams like Douglas Water Thistle (amateur team?)

For the first few months, he was also one of the most infuriating players I 'd ever seen, falling over at every opportunity.  If social media and this forum had been around then, he'd probably never have lasted the season.

Johnson has been a bit unlucky. He obviously has an eye for goal, but our chosen formation never really suited him and he is never going to be a hard working, target man. I think a move is best for both parties (and we still have his opener against Rangers and closer against Celtic to look back on).

Reading the press release about Mazinga, is does sound like he's not the first choice forward Robinson had talked about - of course, we might not be able to find one of those during the window.

I wasn't aware that this forum held such sway with the manager's team selection.

I'm pretty sure we signed Ian St John from DWT. Willie Pettigrew was excellent for EK Thistle, where he played alongside the unforgettable Willie Ditchburn. I used to watch EKT occasionally if The 'Well had an away game I didn't fancy.

Could never understand why Willie D. didn't get the Barcelona gig......

Some on here appear  to have more expertise than the management team. Surely it must have ? Aldred, Main, Gorrin to name just three written off before a ball was kicked because they failed to come from a bigger club or supporters of previous clubs had stated they were awful.

In all seriousness surely with the number of players we have signed who have come from nowhere over the last three years or so everyone has learnt not to pre judge.

Not fussed re Johnson however I do think he will score a barrow load in the Championship.

I am more annoyed re losing McAlear. Potential to be a top player and we won’t get to see him in claret and amber.

In saying that look at recent youngsters who potentially moved down south early, Hall, Leitch and even the lad mentioned recently Leighton. All of them now looking for clubs or playing in lower leagues (Leitch).

Would they have been better served staying here and getting some more game time. Arguably yes.

Feel like another wasted chance.

No sympathy for them if it doesn’t work out tbf. Their choice to leave and not get a chance at first team.

I don’t actually know if it’s an “amateur” league like it is here. The Belgian First Amateur League is the 3rd division of the Belgian tiers. Ultimately if a team in that league won back to back promotions they’d be in the top league. So I’d give an estimation that they are more likely Scottish championship level, could be wrong but I’ve actually heard of his former team.

In what sense? I read up on them and the division they are in they only got their a couple of years ago for the first time.

I agree in you assesment of the belgian league structure. Not sure it is like our Amateurs .

My mistake I’d heard of R. Charleroi S.C. He played for R. Châtelet S.C. Easy mistake to make.

I always laugh at how any player we sign is written off by some before kicking a ball. Remember most signings are freebies and on one or two year deals. Yes some won't work but we have made good money on Marvin j...heneghan....anier....Louis.   look at old firm.....lafferty and commper bought for 700k and a million and sold for hee haw.   COYW. Ps. A full post without a corny joke!!!!...jeez heat must be getting to me

Tbf started one with Motherwell over the summer signing all the new players, managed to win the lot in my first year (no clue how). Signed the new lot and they’ve did me decent in Champ League group stage and won me the betfred. Still to sign Manzinga but.

Hard to believe that you would pick an amateur to be your starter?  Are we sure this is the starter as mentionned by Robinson or is this just a low cost option been put our way? I'd like to hear what Robinson has to say.

Robinson clearly clarifying.

  • There’s still a couple of things ongoing as well, as I’ve said previously.

“It has to be the right person. It has to be a starter.

“We are not going to bring in and fill the squad. We’ve got younger boys in the background we feel can make up that squad.

“It has to be the right person. So we will be patient.

“There’s still a few more weeks left. There may be something done further down the line.”

Makes sense. The press release about Mazinga sounds like we were going to sign him a short while ago (before the chat about a first team starter), but there was a minor fitness issue that needed to be addressed by our physio.

Manzinga - what a name. He could be absolute shite, but to have a player who sounds like a porn star is a new  high for Motherwell.

We are also assembling quite easily the coolest looking squad in the division. Key move was to get rid of the ginger and bring in the Zinga!

Well fans can be hard to please. I remember when Willie Pettigrew :notworthy:first came into the first team and got pelters for "not knowing offside from his backside."  It wasn't that. It was his style of play. He was lightning quick over 10-15 yards and liked to play right on the line of the opposition defence but lacked the experience to know when to spring forward. Mind you he wasn't long in learning.
