Well fans can be hard to please. I remember when Willie Pettigrew :notworthy:first came into the first team and got pelters for "not knowing offside from his backside."  It wasn't that. It was his style of play. He was lightning quick over 10-15 yards and liked to play right on the line of the opposition defence but lacked the experience to know when to spring forward. Mind you he wasn't long in learning.

And Gary McAllister used to take pelters for not tackling like Ally Mauchlen.

(And until our Cup winning season, Steve Kirk took pelters many weeks for playing like Steve Kirk) .

I yet again read comments about our players after what are competitive friendlies minus the 10 substitutions that:

  • Donnelly is now a world beater
  • Long is suddenly an imposter and
  • Scott who should be sent down the leagues last week to serve an apprenticeship can now stay
  • When I throw in 12 months ago Bigirimana being touted as the key to our season after putting his foot on the ball in the Cup Final and
  • People looking back on Gorrin as they key member of our squad that's currently missing after only starting what? .... 16 games?
  • Add in various negative comments until mid-October after they signed for both Moult and Higdon about their suitability
  • And of course the usual suspects focusing on where a player has came from rather than what they bring

Can we all just chill the fuck out!

Motherwell close in on Maciver

Motherwell are set to sign freed Ross County youngster Ross Maciver on a one-year deal.

Attacking midfielder Maciver, 20, who has been training with the Steelmen, impressed Fir Park boss Stephen Robinson enough to win a contract.

Motherwell will see the youngster as a replacement for midfield starlet Reece McAlear, 17, who has now joined Premier League side Norwich.

Maciver was released after the Staggies pulled out of the reserve league.

After coming on as a sub in County’s Irn-Bru Cup win over Montrose in October, Maciver spent last term’s latter stages on loan at Elgin where he scored four goals.

Quite: my only concern this season is that Chick Young has tipped us to finish third, so we may well have to prepare for the play-offs  .

What we can say is that....

Our League Cup campaign so far has been significantly more impressive than last year.

Gallagher looks like an upgrade on any of the centre halves we had last year.

Some of our other signings have shown early promise (Hylton, Carroll, Polworth) Others look like they still have a way to go fitness wise so the jury is still out (Seedorf, Illic, Cole, Long)

Donnelly looks much improved but without DT its unclear what our best midfield is and whether it can be as effective. Sloth could be the answer to that but too early to tell.

We still have questions up front. James Scott has shown promise but he will need back up and no one else has stepped forward so far.

We have 2 of the best goalkeepers in the League.

A lot to be positive about I would have thought. The next few weeks will let us know for sure.

Ideally Scott should be going out on a 6 month loan but at the moment it looks like he will be our main striker. It'll be a physical challenge for him but if he starts well we will have another major asset in the squad.

It might be useful to get a specialist striker coach in who has experience playing up top to work with him and teach him some dark arts.

Am I the only one a bit confused by these rumours? Robinson comes out explicitly saying he doesn't want to sign any more squad players. Next thing we are linked with a 20 year old midfielder released by Ross County and a 19 year old defender. Robinson states we have young players coming through and that's why we don't need more squad players. How do these potential signings effect Semple, Cornelius and Devine?

Not saying that the guys we are linked with are bad players (have never seen either play) but I can't see either going straight into the first team. So the only effect is to push our own academy players further down the pecking order. In Maciver's position we have Polworth, Sloth and Semple, not to mention Turnbull and Tanner to come back. In Leighton's we maybe only have three first choice centre backs but we also have Maguire who can play there and Devine who we're told is very highly rated.

Not saying I wouldn't sign these players if they're good enough. Just strikes me that it goes against what the manager has said before....

Yes, had been in training at Celtic but wasn’t offered anything.

Interesting. Remember the stories when he was training with Benfica etc before opting for Watford and was very well thought of.  If he comes back it could work out very well, or it could be a Fraser Kerr scenario...hopefully the former!

By the way were losing our Young players theres a good chance Semple, Cornelius & Devine will all be sold in the next week or two so its no bad thing to have a look at other possible prospects to bolster our reserve squad

Killie fan saying we have a closed door game tonight with them at rugby park. Anyone heard anything? Rebuild continues? Maybe a chance to look at some of the squad players?

Game time for the likes of Carson, Sloth and Livingstone? Don't know if Tanner would be risked yet on an artificial surface...

I was very much on the same boat, however after reading the article it kind of makes sense, first of all he was released by Ross county because they weren't entering a team in the reserve league but by all accounts I think he was rated. with regards to him taking the spot of Cornelius, he is being  being signed to take Reece mcclears spot in the reserves, a one in one out style transfer.

Apart from the fact that he was released a year earlier and Ross County are still in the Reserve League - the DR report is spot on  - see post from Ross County fan on P&B https://www.pieandbovril.com/forum/index.php?/topic/230925-motherwell-fc-a-thread-for-all-seasons/&do=findComment&comment=13103188

It’s our reserves against a Killie first team so I’ve heard. The likes of Devine, Semple etc. Are playing alongside first teamers who aren’t involved on Saturday and ones who need fitness, (Cole and Sloth) also with a couple of trialists could be more.
