Again shocking defending.  As the game entered its closing stages we began to defend deeper and deeper and paid the inevitable price.  No-one was marking Magennis who had plenty of space inside our box.  A last ditch but unsuccessful tackle shouldn't mask poor organisation.

St Mirren were surprisingly unambitious yesterday as others have mentioned but their defence was overall more solid than ours on the day; not great but not error prone.  I was also puzzled as to why Ariyibi was taken off.  He didn't have a great game overall but maybe halfway into the second half he really came onto a game and annoyed the Saints defence to such an extent that they decided collectively that enough was enough began to take turns to hack him down.   Was he injured or knackered?

I think the substitutions on the whole yesterday were poor, I don’t believe Ariyibi was injured and as you say although not at his best he was still causing them problems. Taking Turnbull off was just baffling, I would love to hear the reason for that move. On top of that he had everyone out of position. Certainly not Robinson’s finest hour.

Forgot to add that playing as a lone striker is a big ask of anyone let alone an inexperienced youngster like Scott.

Agree ........thought  Scott got better in the second half and a number of times he found himself chasing the ball out wide especially on the right, which resulted in balls being played into the middle with no one their to challenge for it

Then the midfielders weren't doing their job...

Bottom six prize money...

7th - £1,437,500

8th - £1,375,000

9th - £1,312,500

10th - £1,250,000

11th - £1,187,500

12th - £1,125,000

So I make the difference between 7th and 8th a whopping £62,500.

Considering the fact that we regularly have people standing around the stadium with collection buckets I think that whopping £62,500 will come in handy.

Turnbull's substitution seemed sensible to me at the time, the guy wasn’t having his best game and was looking a bit jaded. He’s still a young guy and to avoid burnout needs his game time managed, so being 1 up, looking comfortable and with next weeks game at StJohnstone in mind I’d have done the same.

Yesterday was essentially a training game, Robinson's substitutions obviously didn't work but I don't have a problem with him experimenting a new shape or trying guys in different positions.

Yep agreed.

Turnbull for Semple I was fine with. I was keen to see Semple in that number 10 thpe role. Although Turnbull was playing a bit deeper yesterday so Semple kind of had to too.

Frear for Grimshaw was the odd one. I'd have put Frear on for Aryibi at that point anyway. Which would have meant  no rearranging.

Livingstone for Aryibi later I was fine with in isolation, to see him in a more advanced role. So perhaps that was what the Frear sub was all about.

Yep, although I think Scott chasing our wide was part of a more fluid system. But the midfielders and wide players didnt always hold up their end of the bargain to rush the box.

Scott was one of our better players in the 2nd half but let's face it Turnbull is the only midfielder that drives into the box.

That's why he scores every week and everyone else is on 0, 1 or 2 goals for the season.

It's also why I felt we really missed Hastie yesterday.  Not saying he should play now that his future isn't here, just that we lack that type of player.

Without Gorrin we look very average in midfield, not a lot of other options just now in truth. Hopefully the guy coming in from Inverness can fill the gap as it looks like Gorrin could be away.

Two good posts Ya Beezer and Yorky.  When we play with a lone striker like Scott, there's usually a disconnect with wingers playing wide or deep and attacking midfielders.  We were creating chances from wide but there was a lack of bodies getting into the danger areas quickly to take full advantage and take the weight off Scott. Turnbull played in a deeper role.

We definitely missed Gorrin as he is a good all rounder.  He's someone who can compete and tackle, albeit rashly at times, but is also comfortable on the ball and can pass.  We've not had such player for some years now.  This type of player is a real asset for any team and means that they can support and help more specialised types.  Polworth, as I understand it, is an attacking midfielder who can also play wide.  Hopefully we will replace Gorrin with a like for like player, but Polworth isn't that man.  Carl McHugh is a decent but limited player.  On Saturday he defended reasonably well and won more than his fair share of aerial duels but his lack of pace and passing ability limited his influence.  I thought he could also have been more assertive at times, especially in the closing stages, when we needed someone in the engine room to kick a few butts. All that said, there are worse players than Carl McHugh.

Yes, I think yesterday showed how important in that system Gorrin is. With McHugh (who I thought had his best game for months actually) more limited than Gorrin it really showed from a creative sense. Carl can't turn on the ball or make those short attacking passes like Gorrin can. So in turn it meant Turnbull playing a bit deeper to try and make things happen. It must be said though, St Mirren played a part in that as they really flooded the midfield at time to stop us playing.

I know you expect team mates to stick together, but any time guys like Hartley, Tanner, Cadden etc. are on the commentary, they all rate him. Hartley in particular always said he was great player to have in front of you.

He might not be our best ever, but I'm never quite sure where the hate comes from.

I think Robinson does to, he made him captain. I would agree that he’s had far too much stick in the past, even when he’s performed well at centre half. Honestly I would like to see him stay as part of the squad, he’s a very dependable player coming off the bench when the tempo has dropped. However it’s only when he starts in place of someone like Gorrin that you see he’s just not up to the same level, his pace, mobility, and at times passing ability are not quite at the level needed to push the team forward. It feels at times like someone has pulled on the handbrake.

McHugh is a decent centre half. Id be happy for him to stay. If Aldred is away and Gallagher comes in I think we have plenty cover with Dunne, Maguire and Mbulu. Thats even without taking Hartley into account.
