New hybrid pitch for well

Cost allegedly around £2m. Not just the pitch but a total clear out of all the old pipes etc underneath, including renewal of the drainage, undersoil heating and sprinkler system. Also they are digging down further to an old pitch surface which is basically a concrete base and was causing all sorts of issues for drainage and under pitch pipework.

NEW PITCH

I thought I was clued up on all things Motherwell, but there's a pitch under the pitch? when from? I always thought the slope was impossible to fix due to the stands or something too.

Might join Twitter again for the progress pics.

It’s taking a sensible long term view, Hybrid pitches are so much more stable and easier to maintain. It’s like constantly paying for repairs to an old car, eventually it has to go off to the scrapyard.

I'm all for a hybrid pitch but if the figure of 2 million quoted is what's being thrown at it I can't say I'm onboard. I'd go as far as to say it's absolutely nuts.

Thought I'd seen a figure  of £850K mentioned somewhere.  Investment will reduce ongoing maintenance costs and help attract more income apparently.

I am not sure about this given that MFC have had nothing but glowing praise for the condition of the pitch being one of the best in the country when it used to be regarded as one of the worst (if not THE worst).

If the investment is needed to maintain this standard then I may stand corrected.

As I said I am not sure.

If you read the details on the official site,  it explains why investment is needed to maintain this standard.

“For the last decade or more, the club has spent considerable cash, each summer, patching up the pitch to try and get us through the following season,” Chief Executive Alan Burrows said.

“Owing almost exclusively to the skill and talent of Paul Matthew, our current Head Groundsman, and his deputies, we have seen a marked improvement over the last few years, albeit the root problems continue to persist under the surface and maintaining a reliable, stable pitch is becoming increasingly more challenging, particularly through the winter months.

“We are throwing away good money every year by not fully fixing this issue.

“So the Board have decided to do just that, which will not only provide an enhanced and reliable playing surface, but will also materially reduce the annual maintenance costs and allow us to further commercialise the pitch and the stadium, much like we have done in the past, but have been unable to in recent times because of the poor pitch construction.

So it seems a pretty clear cut case.

The current groundstaff have done wonders with the pitch over the years but going by what flow has said it seems like we're at the point where we have had to bite the bullet and fully redo the pitch.its going to be a big outlay but if it does save the club money in the long term then it will be fully worth it.

my information says the cost is accurate as they need to dig through almost 15 inches of concrete hard ground (an old pitch) over the entire surface. Thats a lot of concrete hard ground to bin. This is the reason why the pitch does not drain well and leads to flooding of the stadium offices. Also does not help that the drainage channels run the wrong way on the pitch. Once they dig down they can get rid of a hell of a lot of old pipework as well. Its a mess just under the pitch and this has been needed for a long time.

Certainly the lower of the two quotations above mentioned in despatches at club AGM.

Unsure if removal of the front 2 rows of the East Stand to facilitate the works is still the option.

Hybrid pitches seem to be the way to go. Lots of top clubs now have them.  Club to be applauded for doing this.

However a hybrid pitch in a stadium that always needs running repairs?? It’s like putting a Rolls Royce engine in an old banger!

I think it's just one row and it was supposed to be started straight after the match last night.
Was there any update at the club AGM about a new training ground?
