I had that problem at first..,. thought it wasn't going to accept my Irish number, but turns out it was just very fussy about the format and the error message was useless. For UK mobile, has to start "+44", or for my Irish one, "+353". It won't accept a number without the leading plus sign, or with the (more internationally-recognised) "00" instead. Had you already registered in the past but hadn't paid yet? Same thing happened with me when I went to pay after registering earlier that day.
