Honestly thought Slattery would be away. Offering him a contract is probably the 'right thing to do' with him recovering from injury. Has he actually earned a new contract? I'm not sure to be honest, he's undoubtedly a talented player but he goes through lengthy spells of being anonymous or underwhelming.

I'd have released Slattery.  Decent player on his day but those days can often be very few and far between.  Overall his basics aren't good enough.

Didn't''t really miss him when he was injured and in fact our form improved as I thought it might.

Assuming he's one of the top earners at the club I'd suggest you could get more value for the wages.

The one thing I'd say in Slattery's favour is that with Spittal gone maybe there is more of a role for him in the team.  As I said last season I felt they didn't both fit into the same starting eleven.

Maybe he's an AM but he's absolutely not a CM or DM.

I wonder if this will be another year where we don't release our new strip until the last kick? And lose out on potential sales that could be made during the Scottish summer, school holidays and so on?

We could always do the Rangers/Celtic strategy.

Bring out an away kit at the beginning of the summer.  Wear it on the first league match of the season.  Then immediately bin it and bring out another away kit until Christmas when that kit gets binned and another kit comes out.

Only thing is we won't also be able to release a 'Euro' kit as well.

Yes, I liked this season's traditional strip and fear a crazy design for 2024-5  "just be different", perhaps even worse than the Jester's Outfit.

    Nothing can be that bad.

The thing that makes it even worse we made some really great players wear the thing (Martin, Coyne etc.)

Not that every Championship-level striker will do as badly as Shields, of course. But the gulf in quality is there for us to see when the playoffs happen each year usually.

Some fans complain when we sign a no-name player from the lower reaches of the English league, but I'd hazard a guess that the leagues we're signing from down south are likely better quality overall than the Championship up here.

    in recent times you have

    Alan Forrest (Hearts)

    Luke McCowan (Dundee)

Robbie Deas & Lewis Mayo (Kilmarnock)

    Simon Murray (Ross County)

James Penrice (Livingston, has signed for Hearts I think)

All good players that have come straight from Championship clubs..

And there are loads of players who have played at Championship level without coming directly from a Championship club - Nicky Deviln, Marley Watkins etc, etc.

You don't sign a league so I'm not sure about your analogy.  It's about identifying individual players that fit into our system and style of play.  We should be looking at all available markets - Ireland, England, Scotland, Scandanavia and elsewhere.

There are players in Championship that could do us a turn.

Bowman was great for us, no nonsense front man put himself and his elbows about a bit I liked him.

Maybe if you are into bloodsports.

Ryan Bowman made Curtis Main look prolific.  He scored 10 league goals over three seasons and 70+ matches.

His league goal tallies were 2, 7 and 1.

Last season he scored 1 goal in 26 for Shrewsbury which makes the fact he's been freed not that surprising.

  6. Saw the statement about player releases and contracts and have a couple of questions.

Obika and Tierney weren't mentioned as either being released or offered new contracts.

I believe they were both contracted up to this summer.  I'd assume they are gone then but it wasn't categorically stated.

Also, is it correct that we don't have a single recognised first team player contracted beyond 2025?

Didn’t like the kit we wore

If I knew you got free Yazoo as a professional footballer maybe I would have tried harder.

Yeah, Turnbull's a mystery. I'd have bet money on him being a Scotland regular by now, but it just isn't happening for him. Postecoglou, Rodgers and Clarke obviously had doubts/issues with him and he's settled into the same sub or subbed routine at Cardiff, but without the goals.

Turnbull has been treated like garbage everywhere he's been, including here.  It's got to effect your confidence.  I mean Turnbull was literally still one of the top scorers in the Scottish Premiership this season and he got bombed out after 9 starts.

It's also worth thinking about the fact that he's had two serious injuries in his career at a relatively early age.

There is no doubt he is a talent though, picking Ryan Jack over him when Jack is over the hill, perma-injured and has one start since last November has got to be a kick in the balls.

Yup I agree, not convinced Bair will be as prolific next season and if he is then teams will get him cheaper as 1 Yr left of contract.  However if we can get him to sign year extension I would be tempted to keep him.

Regarding next goalie I would happily take a loan goalie for a season. Has worked for us before and it also didn't do killie and st mirren harm this season

Bair scored 1 goal in his last 6 games and that was a penalty so the idea that he might not be as prolific next season is valid until disproved.

For goalie can I throw in the name of Kevin Dabrowski.  He's been excellent for Raith Rovers this season.  He's got a year left on his contract at Hibs and spent all this season out on loan.  Hibs will have a new manager who might want to bring in his own players.  Think it's worth a shout.

  10. Bit of a loaded question.

I voted "no".  But it doesn't mean I'm in the 'flaming torch and pitchfork' mob.

I'm of the 'use this as a base line and improve next season' rather than 'clear the players, the manager and the board out'.

It might be hard for us to score as many goals next season but I definitely want to see more home wins, more clean sheets, better fundamentals on the pitch, better cup performances etc, etc.

  11. Obviously we have to make the defensive fixes but before we do that....

Our top 6 performers this season in my view.

    Biereth - already gone

    Spittal - going

Gent - loan, will return to parent club

Miller - attracting interest from other clubs

Bair - attracting interest from other clubs

McGinn - out of contract, turning 34.

  12. Today kind of summed up the season.

    1) Scored. 2) Didn't play well with no recognisable style of play, bit pedestrian. 3) Defensively hopeless. 4) No home win.

I'm mentioned it before but I will do again.  We conceded in 35 out of 38 league matches. Big, big improvements needed over the the summer, especially defensively.

Dragging out the child abuse case for 30 years at the expense of the victims isn't an issue for you?

Child abuse, like many other terrible things, is endemic in society.  I don't view it as a specific football issue.  It's a societal/legal issue.

I didn't stop supporting Motherwell when one of our managers was charged with domestic abuse, for instance.

In the Celtic case there was ambiguity over who was responsible over settlement.  Hence the drawn out nature of the case.  For some time Celtic denied they were responsible, which was their legal right.

If I'd had access to all the court documentation I would honestly have had no idea if Celtic were legally responsible.

I simply have no idea what links one entity to another under Scots law, which was the crux of the case.

These issues are for the courts and legal profession to sort out and far outside of my view as a football supporter.

Overall though I've always found football supporters 'point scoring' against others in cases where there was real human suffering a little troubling.

We've currently lost 53 goals, the same number we lost last season.

But we concede virtually every match and you get points from individual match results, not end of season totals.

So far this season there have been 16 matches were we would have gained a point or points by keeping a clean sheet.

That's a massive number of points over a season.  In fact it's 31 points.  Probably enough that if we'd done that in half the instances we'd be in Europe next term.

If we don't tighten up at the back it will absolutely mean Bottom 6 again next season and it's quite clearly the main priority to be worked on during the summer.

  15. If, like me these days, you just go to home matches you'll have got 5 wins in 18 matches this season.  That's not good enough. Or if you like 75 quid a win on your season ticket! More if you are in the posh stand! 🤣

And 2 of those wins were against a team that have been hopeless all season and must have one of the lowest points tallies in the modern era.

If you take them away you get 3 wins from 16.  Ain't great is it?

We've scored goals but our defensive record is absolutely appalling.

We've managed 3 clean sheets in the league all season.  1 at Fir Park and 2 away.  I mean even Livingston managed more than 50% more clean sheets than us (7).  That's got to be some kind of unwanted club record surely? 3 clean sheets in a season.....

I supported the manager through the tough period because I want to look at things more long term than a period within a season but there is definitely a lot of scope for improvement.

I'd keep Kettlewell at the helm but there are areas where we need to show considerable improvement next season.

Bair against Livi, because not only was that a great goal but it really boosted his confidence for the remainder of the season.

I also really enjoyed Slattery's against Hearts because it was a nice move and it was against Hearts.

The Slattery goal would be my pick.  It's the type of goal a real top side like Manchester City or Real Madrid would score.

Didn't Spittal score a peach of a free kick this season?  Or was that last season?

Ah so its still King Louis.

Would fancy him to beat the league record but for the season he's gonna have to do pretty well.

But who knows, maybe there is a last day of the season hat trick against St Johnstone in the future!

I didn’t say that it did, I was merely making an observation that the more vocal “faithers” of the support, particularly on here tend to be the ones who don’t actually attend games. I’m not interested in the reasons they don’t or can’t go, that’s their business, but it’s a bit rich when these types get all sanctimonious and start riding about on their high horses with fans who actually were at the game.

I stopped commenting on games I don't go to a while back, which is most away matches.

Not saying everyone should do that but I just don't feel comfortable having an opinion on something I didn't actually see for myself.

PS: I think Theo Bair has now broken Louis Moult's season's best, of 15, by a goal.

    2016/17 Louis Moult - LEAGUE 30+1 (15) CUPS 2+1 (3) TOTAL 32+2 (18) (2 pens)

    2023/24 Theo Bair - LEAGUE 28+7 (15) CUPS 3 (0) TOTAL 31+7 (15) (3 pens)
