  1. The thing is Jennings is/was an established player on a longer contract you could see why it was worth our while persevering with him until he got his fitness up. Hughes is contracted until the 3rd of January and hasn't shown anything to deserve a new one. And even if he did get a new one we are at the business end of the season now and can't afford to carry players that aren't performing. I don't even think Hughes would be a 1st pick anyway provided Jennings and Lasley were available which makes it harder again for him to get his fitness up to the required level.
  2. If you put McHugh in you'd have to move Law out to the left and if you are moving Law you are better off just dropping him and keeping Murphy wide and putting McHugh behind Higdon. The match where Murphy was dropped we looked more blunt going forward than ever and only improved when he came on as a substitute. I hope Steven Hughes gets dropped for this match. His signing looks like a mistake, he's inconsistent even when fit but it's obvious from seeing him that his long lay off from competitive football has left him so far off the pace he's toiling even to keep up with the game and everything is just passing him by. Of course, Forbes, who had a couple of good matches earlier in the season that could have been built upon, has been left to wither on the vine by McCall so bringing him into the XI might result in the same thing happening. Any way this is one we should win but because of that, and our poor home record, there could be more pressure on the team. You get the impression that our home form curse is building by the match and is actually beginning to affect the players. It's hard to tell what kind of Dunfermilne will turn up but they are better away from home than at home and if you exclude their heavy defeat away to Hearts they have only lost their last 3 away matches 1-2, including visits to both Rangers and Celtic so it might not be as easy as some people think. They are becoming a little detached at the bottom of the league now and you'd expect them to come out fighting to avoid being cut a drift.
  3. Christmas isn't often Merry for Motherwell supporters!
  4. Overall you can't argue with the league position or points tally. On the other hand I think we've carried a wee bit of luck at times, the standard of the opposition is not great and the level of home performances has been mediocre to say the least. I also think he's shown himself to be tactically inflexible at times. At the end of the day though you'd probably rather win ugly than be at the wrong end of the table and McCall has done well to ensure our status under Brown with pretty limited resources. I'd give him 7.5 out of 10. Although its immensely difficult to improve on the league position I would like to see a slightly higher standard of performance at Fir Park which I think is something that is achievable.
  5. I agree Humphrey started brightly and then fell into bad habits but let's face it this is his third season at the club and we pretty much know what kind of player he is. The thing that worried me more than Humphrey going forward was how much more exposed defensively we were when Humphrey came on. There was a noticeable difference and we seemed much more stretched, he frequently gave the ball away and didn't seem to be as effective tracking back as Daley but it could also have been down to us trying to push forward in the later stages and players being tired. By the same token though, Humphrey as a fresh player should have been able to steam up and down that side of the park easier than players who had started.
  6. Saw a guy last week slip on the top step into Airbles station and go down the lot of them. Guess he wasn't hard enough.
  7. Definitely not the worst team we've played this season. Very well drilled in midfield. Their narrow diamond shape worked very well against us, usually they had two on Lasley or Jennings and as a result they were very difficult to break down, especially first half. Hasselbaink is a wee pest as well and reminds me a lot of John Spencer. That said I think they are defensively vulnerable and depend on that midfield shield. Oh and Jim Goodwin is a c**t.

    St Mirren

Best bit of entertainment was Murphy's run, shame Higdon couldn't finish it or it could have been a goal of the season contender. Thought Jennings had a decent game but I'd give it to Darren Randolph - a rock all match, caught ever cross, held ever shot and made some very good saves.
  9. Draw was about right although St. Mirren probably slightly edged it. Poor first half from us but second half was an improvement even if we didn't exactly hit the heights.
  10. Good stuff. In the first video does anyone know what the stadium was with the big brick factory building in the background?

    Europe

Let's qualify by winning the Scottish Cup!

    Europe

Remember though that that was the last season of 2 points for a win. 54 points these days just about guarantees a Top Six place although I think this season the number of points needed to qualify for Europe or get into the Top Six will be lower than usual due to the number of draws and the fact that no teams have really put together a strong unbeaten run.
  13. Well a lot of teams play the 4-2-3-1 system (or variant) these days which is suited to counter attacking football and therefore away sides.
  14. Well St. Johnstone beat us easily at Fir Park with a lot to spare. Jamie Adams and Kevin Moon completely dominated the middle of the park yet I'm sure most 'Well supporters would say they are shite and couldn't lace Jennings and Lasley's boots. They have a very good defence (only OF and Hearts have conceded less) and they have players like Jody Morris, Murray Davidson, Chris Millar (superb at Fir Park), Liam Craig and Francesco Sandaza in the middle and up front. All good SPL players. They also taken points off both the Old Firm this season and only lost 2 out of their last 13 league matches. I'm not sure how you can describe them as poor given their form and the fact that they beat us so easily last time.
  15. At least its away from home! I'd think about going but the only league away match I've been to this season was Kilmarnock so I'm obviously not a lucky mascot at the moment.
  16. Looked at a league table recently? If St. Johnstone beat us next week at their place they are only 1 point behind us. Fair enough if we win it opens up a gap again but its a bit of a 6 pointer next Saturday.
  17. Born in Bridgeton. Mainly raised in Newarthill (When I was a kid I used to walk to Fir Park and back!). Lived in various areas of Glasgow on and off but Motherwell is 'home' and I've been living just down the road from Fir Park for the last 10 years. Would be off in a shot but I've nae money!
  18. Hibs had a decent support through tonight - probably due to it being Fenton's first match and the cheap prices at the away end. Take away their 1,500...not a big difference from an average attendance.
  19. I'd give pass marks against Celtic even though we didn't create many chances and the LC match against Hibs was at least exciting but after that, like you, I have to go back to the first day of the season.
  20. I make it 7 out the last 8 home performances absolutely pish. I'm actually getting a bit annoyed now with the standard of fare at Fir Park these days. Sure, we are third have a great points tally but if you only make it to the home matches this season has been pretty grim.
  21. That was absolutely brutal tonight - one of the worst games I've ever seen. Glad it was abandoned!
  22. It's worthwhile as an experiment but I'd say that unless it attracts significantly more supporters than a Saturday game we should stick to Saturdays. I won't not go to any match I can get along to but it does seem like a bit of a pain. I work in Glasgow and I don't get back to Motherwell until between 6 - 6.30pm so its not especially convenient for me and I suspect many others. It will be interesting to see how many supporters Hibs bring along, as their support is dwindling by the week regardless of kick off times!

    Dundee Utd

Didn't really think there was a stand out but I'd probably go for Nicky Law who I thought was neat and tidy in poor conditions.
  24. For some reason I seem to remember us playing Queens Park twice in recent seasons. Of course there was the Ritchie hat trick match at Hampden but I can't quite remember anything about the 'other' match - is it false memory syndrome?
  25. I don't get to say this phrase very often these days but I'm 'too young' to remember Joe Wark. Obviously Boyd played at left back but I seem to remember him popping up all over the place and being a bit of a utility player. Some times full back, some times defence, some times midfield, both wide and middle. He's not someone I remember as being a left back in the same way as Stevie Hammell is a left back or Rob McKinnon was. McKinnon has been the best in my time. I don't think anyone has mentioned it but on my first trip up to Aberdeen Rab scored a pearler of a free kick, think Alex Burns scored the other goal if I remember correctly.
