Mugabi is pish and we don't defend any better when he's on.

Just play the usual formation and have a go. Maybe have O'Hara in for Ilic.

Not a huge fan but he done pretty well at Ibrox, think it was in a 3.

He seems to struggle when he has time to actually pass the ball which is slightly problematic when you are a footballer.

At this rate he will be up front anyway so no chance of him at centre back

    • Haha 1
  2. If Scott goes we are left without a striker and winger basically. Replacing him with just a winger leaves us very short for a #9. We would have Long and Mazinga which is far too bare. Another good thing about Scott was he could play two positions

  3. There's absolutely no chance Griffiths will be coming to us on loan. Lennon is already on record as saying he won't be leaving.. even if he was, I am sure he would have more enticing suitors than ourselves.

Regardless of his personal issues Griffiths would still be miles outwith our reach.

  4. I'm never particularly wary when we play the OF it at Fir Park to be honest. Our record is pretty decent at home to Celtic as of late. The majority of the time we raise our game and rise to the occasion and atleast make a decent fist of things.

St Johnstone are pretty gash at the moment too, I wouldn't read too much into Saturday's result until I see them against a better opponent. I still think we can give them a decent go at Fir Park on the tight park.

After the underwhelming performance on Saturday a few random thoughts with Saturday's game in mind:

    •  Devante Cole looks like he has something when he came on, I think he would give us a bit more presence either upfront or on the wide area
    • Illic has a good touch and technically looks to be a baller if we can get him involved he could make things happen
    • I'm still firmly not convinced by Liam Donnelly, he didn't do enough for me on Saturday. Unfortunately I think this might be a problem area. Not sure if Sloth will be fit enough to play but if so I would throw him in
    • I was impressed with Hylton I think he will do well for us, from Saturday however I am a wee bit unsure how his stature is going to stand up in the SPFL. It might have just been because Livi are animals but he seemed to get bullied about a bit. Still, I think his trickery could be key to us getting anything on Saturday
    • Seedorf has something but some of his decision making and postional sense makes me think he has a lot to learn.

I think everyone knows that we have to give all of the new signings a chance, but this idea that any criticism of them based on their career to this point should be off the table is getting tedious. How boring would the place be if everyone just responded to a new signing by saying "great, I trust the managers judgement, let's see how this new guy gets on."

It's natural to see a new signing and immediately look at where he's been before and what he's accomplished. Is that a cast-iron indication of how he'll do for us? Absolutely not, but to completely dismiss it as not worth discussing is mental.

Personally, I'm not impressed by this guys career to this point. It's a signing that has me scratching my head a bit, as I'm fairly sure there are players available in Scotland for similar money who have a better track record. In fact, even though playing with a lone striker isn't really playing to Danny Johnson's strengths I'd have more confidence in him than this new guy based on what they've both done in the past. Johnson can score goals for us if given the chance, he's done it before.

Now, just to clarify, this isn't me not "giving the new guy a chance," it's me, as a fan, looking at what he's done until now and forming an opinion. That opinion will change as he gets chances to play for us, and obviously I hope he turns out to be a superstar.

    Spot on!

It isn't being negative it's just giving a bloody opinion. This is the same folk that were telling us not to base any sort of opinion on Curtis Main's goal scoring record, look how that turned out.

I think its perfectly fair for fans to pass comment on a player based on what he has done so far in his career. It clearly isn't an exact science but most of the time you can judge a player roughly by what he has done so far.

Personally speaking I'm not overly concerned about this one as I think he sounds more like a low cost punt than anything else, I can't imagine he is going to be on any great deal of money.  It sounds like we will be looking to bring in another more experienced striker soon so I'm okay with this.

With that being said I can totally understand some of the comments about the boy coming from an amateur level.

  6. Aye, I think it's obviously make or break for Livingstone this season.  I don't think there is much point putting him out on loan that's for sure, either have him in the first team squad or let him go.

I'd like to think with the new deal he is going to get a decent crack of the whip this year.

I said at the time I didn't necessarily agree with Robinsons comments about him after the Celtic(?) game I thought it was slightly harsh to criticise him publically. Since this time I can't recall him playing for us. Presumably Robinson must still see something in him.

  7. Hopefully this Christian Ilic transfer gets announced, boy has a decent pedigree.

I'm not sure if Carroll is seen as a cert for the LB first team slot so this could give us another option there as well as giving us something else out wide.

I only seen brief highlights of the boy and he looked a decent unit

  8. Just me buzzing to get the shorts out for Dumfries on Saturday then? The (kind of) real fitbaw is BACK!

Hopefully should have a decent following down there, although there is the whole scotrail mess. For all the League Cup is a bit pish, I am looking forward to seeing the new signings and it's better than pre-season friendlies

  9. Stevie May is a really weird one tbh, he looked a great prospect at St Johnstone but has steadily went downhill. Anytime I seen him with Aberdeen last season he offered absolutely hee-haw.

I'd imagine he would be on a decent wage at Aberdeen as well.

Honestly it's a big fat naw from me.

Aye Braintree bumped that boy down to Carshalton FC.

The photo from outside Raydale doesn't look like him though.

A huge 'Isthmian League Premier Division' club

Iv got a suspicion the trialist is Christie Pattison from Braintree.

Played more as a midfielder for them though.

Could things get anymore tinpot than Braintree Town

  12. Any news from yesterday's meeting regarding incomings?

We were supposed to be signing someone last Friday from what I heard so wondering if that's fell through. Would be good to get some boys in soon as the first team still seems to be very light.

  13. I'd be very surprised if Shankland stays in Scotland. I heard that Sunderland were supposed to be interested in him along with a whole host of clubs down south $$$.

It would be a massive coup for Dundee Utd or ourselves to get him. Don't see it personally

Worryingly, there didn't seem to be that many of them willing to pay this money before the issue even arose. I think we may have overestimated the size of the queue when it comes to clubs willing to chuck £3 million at us.

He has played 30 odd games for us mate, if he has a similar season to last more English teams will stand up and take notice.

How often do SPFL players go direct to the EPL? That's what was going to happen with Norwich. From what I understand there was at least another 1 EPL club interested and several championship clubs.

If he has a legit injury gets the work done and has another 6 months/season we will get the money we want.

I wonder if the delayed confirmation of the transfer is the reason for the delayed announcement of our own transfers, which were seemingly imminent last week. If we were banking on the transfer fee for new players in any way then it just adds extra urgency to our side to get this sorted ASAP. I’m not inclined to negotiate with Celtic, if it actually has come to that I’d much prefer we pulled the plug and went to the ‘transfer targets - plan B’ folder today.

I think you are 100% correct. Burrows suggested transfers were going to go ahead (1 atleast) last Friday but nothing more was said about it.

We need to get this mess sorted out, I personally would suggest if this is not done today then we should pull the plug.

Motherwell should not be negotiating here unless its about where the medical expense lies. If Celtic aren't willing to stump up the originally agreed cash, pull the plug give the boy the operation and let him show his worth all over again.

English teams won't think twice about paying this money once the issue is resolved.

I’ve read some sanctimonious pish spouted here over the past week or so, but, this goes beyond the pale.

You can't understand any Motherwell fan who would genuinely want us to continue to take in transfer fee's (after going debt-free) and not reinvest some of this in the playing squad?

Pray tell me - who has intimated that on here?

Definitely a case of quality over quantity for most I’d wager - that’s where realism comes into it for me.

By your reckoning - the cutting of the first sod on proper training/academy facilities may not happen as long as we increase the budget for the perceived extra quality and his WAG tramp gets the latest Louis Vuitton handbag.

There has to be a balance, they aren’t daft.  Our Chief Executive has stated as much. Now up to him and the board to deliver on all fronts.

If you care to actually read the thread there has been suggestions from folk that taking in of monies from transfer fee's should not be used to increase our playing budget... I am suggesting that there should be a small increase in this following the money we will receive for Turnbull, Hastie & Cadden. Moving forward I am suggesting that now that we are debt free a proportion of future transfer money should be reinvested in the playing budget. This is hardly any sort of madcap proposal here.

Like I have said here (and previously) I think it is perfectly acceptable that fans expect the club to give a little back to the playing squad when we have upwards of 3.5 million pound coming in.

No one has suggested splurging cash, I am suggesting we pay a couple of boys a bit more in the first team so that we can try to attract some better quality. This would put us on a similar level for playing budget with the likes of Kilmarnock rather than Accies. We can keep the same model at it's core but recruit a couple of boys at a slightly better level of quality and sell the players on in the same manner as we already do.

There is a clear middle ground between John Boyle and continuing to budget for 10th place regardless of our transfer incoming's. Sanctimonious? I honestly take it as a given that you as a fan would want the club to strive to be better.

As for spouting pish.. WAGs and LV handbags are just hyperbole when the majority of the guys in the squad are on 'hee-haw' by footballing standards.

    It’s called realism.

If we continue to sell off our best players and bring in cash there is no reason why should continue to operate with the playing budget we currently have.

The club can be applauded for the amount of money we have brought in from transfers but it is pretty pointless if somewhere down the line you are not going to put this investment back into the playing squad. There comes a point where you need to reinvest some of the money in the playing budget. Not doing this would be bad business sense. I'm not saying we won't btw, that remains to be seen but I can assure your Robinson is going to be asking the question.

I can't understand any Motherwell fan who would genuinely want us to continue to take in transfer fee's (after going debt-free) and not reinvest some of this in the playing squad.

Phase 1 - getting out of debt has basically been completed

Phase 2 - should not be the same as before.

I don't realistically see the sale of Turnbull changing our budget. And it shouldn't...

I certainly hope it doesn't. We need to stick to our model.

I think we should certainly stick to a similar 'model' but it would be pretty backwards IMO to stick to the same budget as we had last year. Adapting to your circumstances is normal.

There is a clear middle ground between John Boyle splurging and having one of the lowest wage budgets in the league.

The money coming in is going to clear off our debt with a few million to spare right? A small increase in wage outlay seems pretty reasonable to me. This would hopefully let Robinson capture the type boys he has previously missed out on down south due to wage restrictions and also let us invest in a small number of youth prospects contracts for the future.

A miser type approach after clearing the debt is going to drive away fans. It is honestly depressing to me that some of our fans would accept the club not increasing investment in the playing squad.

  19. Now that Turnbull is officially away there is going to be a lot of expectation on the club to step up to the plate and actually recruit some quality. Looking through the squad just now we are severely lacking quality in a couple of key areas. I think we all need to be realistic about what is and isn't possible in terms of recruitment but I think a lot of fans have made some very decent arguments regarding our recruitment policy.

Personally my expectation is that we should be using a sensible amount of the money received to add to our current wage budget for the next couple of seasons. I would put emphasis on tying up our top couple of youth prospects on decent contracts but perhaps more importantly getting the signatures of targets we might have previously missed out on due to wage restrictions. I'm not talking about splurging here I am talking about getting 2-3 more quality first team players.

There has been some noise from Alan Burrows about how this money is going to transform the club. My suspicion is the club are going to look to invest heavily in either training facilities or some sort of academy venture. Whilst I am 100% for this sort of thing I think we need to get a balance of investing in the current team as well as looking to the future.

We cannot continue to produce this level of talent and let them go so quickly. We need to try and get at least a couple of seasons out boys and then move them on, not 6 months. My fear is if we continue to do this and not invest in the squad at an increased level we will slip down the league standings. Ultimately you need to adapt to your circumstances and we should not have the same budget this season as we did last.

Without Rodriquez Gorrin and Turnbull we have a gaping hole in midfield in terms of quality. If we are looking to play the football we played towards the end of last year we are going to need to invest some wages in getting a quality striker and centre midfield options as a minimum.

There's been a lot of different opinions on the whole Turnbull thing but ultimately the club needs to get the balance right here.  A lot of fans will become disillusioned if we do not use some of this money to try and improve upon the team in terms of quality. Lets be honest we all know what we sign up for being Motherwell fans but there has to be some sort of give and take.
