I’m sure it was Terry Butcher that first started the “punching above our weight” line at a time when we were still in administration when, to be fair, we probably were given the circumstances. Alan Burrows when he posted here began parroting it regularly and others latched on to it from there and it’s stuck ever since with some fans.

When you have been a top flight side for 36 years, won the Scottish Cup and regularly finished in the top half of the table and qualified for Europe then you have more than earned the right to say that you are at the level you deserve to be at.

It's clearly a phrase which is based entirely on available resources. When you consider the city clubs,  isn't your second paragraph the very definition of punching about our weight?

Woolery and Van Even both look decent

I must be watching a different game. Thought they've looked fairly bland today considering its against 2nd Division opposition.

Still think they'll come good though (potentially very good), but not seeing much today.

I think the major concern is the absolute lack of motivation by our players to play for the jersey going back about 3 seasons.

They play when they feel like it and generally show the passion for their trade of a slacker office temp at a photo copier.

This is something that goes back beyond Alexander's appointment and was probably what lost Robinson his job.

If you ask me there has been far too many dross journey men pass through the club over the past few seasons.  In our pursuit to find The Pele of Exeter we've stripped away our own aura and status as a club.  We're supposed to be a top level club yet we are sifting through the bins looking for a diamond someone threw out with the curry scrapings.   We've become a clearing house for the inept of character and the bereft of talent.  It still makes me angry that fucking Jacob Blyth sidled up here and got a contract from us.  Sometimes it seems like we will literally take anyone.

And as I pointed out yesterday our most experienced player has 39 appearances.  There is no one in that dressing room that really gives a damn about the club.  Everyone looks at everyone else to pick them up but there is nothing there and so they all flop.   We have a dressing room full of hopeless transients.  Next season half of them will be gone again.

When I first started coming to Motherwell games our results were just as shite as ever but the players had some technique in their locker, some fire in their bellies and some actual personality.  Not only do our current lot lack the technique, they are the very epitome of the modern day robot footballers.  They aren't passionate about what they do, they don't care if they win or not, they have no ambition, they seem to me like automaton mediocrities going through the motions.

If I played for Motherwell I'd get sent off after 3 minutes in every game.  I'm not expecting players to be fans and act mental.  Just show us you aren't bored to tears or daydream in the dressing room about the heady heights of being a solicitors cashier.

Housewives in the Soviet Union had more joie de vivre than our players.

An entertaining read but some nicely written prose doesn't win football games.

What's your actual pragmatic solution? It seems to be "buy better players and / or  ones who care about the club"?

There’s also two weeks until the season starts and 4 games against opposition (before the window closes) that we need to be taking 8 points from if we’re serious about sitting in the top 6 next April…

So, if we get beaten once in the opening four games, come April - ten months way - we'll be bottom six.

Even for a Motherwell fan, thats an impressive dedication to pessimism there.

sure I heard Craigan mention them doing a double session on Tuesday as well which can't be easy on the legs.

Alexander touched on this in his interview, that they're being really pushed in training and that there will be a degree of fatigue last night.

It wasn't a great performance at all, but there's I don't think there's any cause for concern. The group stages are designed to be part of pre-season and that includes using games as part of fitness and conditioning, testing players positions and formations. The fact we achieved all that and still came away with 3 points makes it a decent result.

Everybody that had a season ticket last season has one this season, plus there's the 500 hundred families or more that are benefiting from the Society scheme. Plus the club mentioned 4000+ on Twitter. So presumably we are in decent shape there.

Didn't know about the 4000+ figure. Absolutely fantastic to hear, I had the fear that a lot of people might be out the habit of going, not missed it as much as they expected or other priorities simply took over. Hopefully it's swung the opposite way.

Haven’t been notified but the money has been taken by MFC for our 4 tickets that I applied for!

Good shout. I've had 12 quid taken out mine. Just need to find out which game I've got now.

Similar to Tanner it could just be that Carson wants a change of scenery.

I'm not sure about that comparison. I thought Tanner left as he needed game time and knew he would never get it at the level of Motherwell. The fact he's now playing in the 6th tier in England justifies his decision. Carson on the other hand I think still wants first team games at a decent level - after 3 years on our bench / treatment table I imagine he'll be expecting to be number one at Tannadice.

Not sure why this wasn't split into Ballot for each game.

Everyone I have spoken to so far (small number no less) has plans to attend only one of the games due to prior engagements. Myself included.

I now have to enter a ballot hoping I get tickets for the correct day or I understand there is some mad swap shop happening.

Taking a guess, but maybe the way they are doing it is to try guarantee every season ticket holder at least the offer of a game? There's effectively 4000 seats split over two games, and less than 4000 ticket holders. The easiest way is to allocate everyone at least one game - which is how I hope they are doing it (rather than 2000 fans getting both games and the remaining fans getting none). To try work preferences into that system becomes really complicated..... I think?

On the topic of where the SPFL is in comparison with League One or Two down south, I once had a wee chat pre season with Ian Baraclough. I asked him where he thought we’d be if we were in the English leagues. His answer was along the lines of, “standard, mid to lower League One… budget, mid League Two”.

Makes sense. We can probably out-compete some of the equivalent budgets in England because we offer the chance to compete in national cup finals and the chance to play in front of 50/60 thousand a few times a season but I imagine the main reason is the exposure through our TV coverage. For an ambitious young player it's not a bad league to move to.

Yes and no...for me, he is completely lost at that level and was comfortable our poorest performer last night despite the best efforts of Armstrong

Disagree. Put together a 5 minute highlight reel of why we went out and you'll have a couple of contributions from O'Donnell where he arguably could have done better alongside plenty from almost every other player on the pitch (who are all on 5/10 times his club wage) - the biggest culprits being our midfielders and forwards who missed plenty of half chances and a few absolute sitters that could have turned all three games in our favour. Likewise, put together a highlight reel of positive passages of play and chances created and you'll have O'Donnell playing his part there.

We have a capacity of over 13k. There should be absolutely no issue in dispersing the average home support of around 4.5k across the four stands and still allowing in a small number of away fans. Release everyone out one stand at a time with a few minutes for each area to disperse.

Yep. 180'000 fans in attendance across the final three euro games at the start of July. Whatever logic they are using there should easily translate to accomodating 5k into Fir Park.

Unless of course yet another massive error of judgement from the UK government. Which is highly likely.

We could go round in circles about this haha, My perception is that the fans drummed up this idea that he had an attitude problem. Not sure that has ever been brought up by anyone at the club, happy to be proven wrong of course.

Yep. I think there's two things that led to that conclusion - one was his dour coupon when playing, and two was the fact he has clear qualities that only came through in patches. He drifted in and out of games / the first team as much as anyone else in the last 18 months but I think the weight of expectations coupled with his wee face led fans to think it must just be an attitude problem.

The idea that someone at motherwell needs an exit clause in their contract, when we actively sell our players is silly.

Carson might disagree. The days of letting our players go for pennies is gone, for now at least.

I actually feel for the guy to be honest. He must know every single foot out of place will be highlighted by the Glasgow media and Rangers fans on social media as to why a kid who's played a handful of senior games should be in the team ahead of him. A kid who, if he played for any other side except Rangers or Celtic, would never be near the squad in all probability.

Exactly this. There isn't a position in the first team that's under as much scrutiny as O'Donnell's for the simple reason that there's a 'Rangers wonderkid' who has played 8 senior games apparently waiting to take his place.

He looked nervous in the first 20 but settled into the game and was no better or worse than anyone else.
