  1. Getting the 240 bus from Lanark with my Dad and feeling excited as others with claret & amber scarves got on at Braidwood, Carluke,Law Hospital, Wishaw and then seeing the steam coming out of Colvilles and knowing we were almost there.

Being excited at seeing foreign players for the first time, think it was Dundee United who had a couple of Scandinavians

The ball going over the roof on what was then the covered terrace and the delay in either getting it back or the substitute ball coming on and being tested by the ref before play could resume.

  2. Interesting to see what the board makes of tonights performance.

First of all Breidablik. They were streets ahead of Llanelli and Flamurtari Vlore. I thought they might flag in the second half being only part timers but if anything they looked to have more in the tank than we did. Almost everyone in the team could pass the ball and they weren't a bad outfit at all. I'd go as far as to say if they played in the SPL they would have a decent chance of survival.

    However....

We were miles off the pace in terms of fitness and game sharpness and yet our goalkeeper didn't have a real save to make in the match and we won 1-0. It wasn't the best from us but we will be better by the next game and I'd hope we would be able to score at least once in Iceland making it a difficult task for Breidablik.

None of our players were really at top form but most of them tried hard and I'm reasonably confident we will go through. I don't see any reason why we should fear Breidablik on their own patch although they won't roll over but I think we are a bit better than them.

Randolph (6) Not much to do, one easy save to make and that was it but looked confident and commanding.

Hateley (5) Looked off the pace even taking into consideration the early start to the season.

Craigan (6) Hasn't got any faster over the summer but looked reasonably assured.

Reynolds (6) Started well but then had a few shaky touches but general on top of things.

Hammell (7) Good performance from Hammell, never really troubled at left back, won lots of balls, looked in good condition

Jennings (6) Obviously not in peak condition but did OK in the midfield role.

Lasley (7) Energetic as ever, even showed some good touches.

Forbes (6) I see the debate going on as regards Forbes. Can't run, doesn't look fit, even looks a little lazy sometimes but all our best stuff came off his foot whether it be crosses, corners, defence splitting passes and of course the goal.

Humphrey (4) I'm afraid I seen nothing from him to suggest he is a player, tonight or most of last season.

Sutton (5) A bit lumbering tonight, needs to sharpen up.

Murphy (7) Very lively, showed some excellent touches but lacks the final ball. Hopefully that will come with more games.

MotM: Stevie Hammell for a good, solid performance.

    Good post ! Thanks

  3. By some strange co-incidence I`ve just received an email asking if I want to sign up for an AS Nancy Credit Card.

I`d signed up for membership to buy tickets in the home section and this is the first I`d heard from then since then.

Mind you maybe they`ve been sending the birthday cards etc to "my French address"

  4. Ruddy is a great keeper but the best I've seen in a Motherwell shirt was local Lanarkshire boy Keith MacRae.

I was at school with him, he was playing for `Well reserves at the time and could play goalie and outfield. Big Roger Hynd was our PE teacher and I remember being in the changing rooms when they were comparing studmarks

  5. Mines was against Dundee United at Fir Park in 1998. Wasn't sure of that for a while, but checked that statistic thing on the club website and found the details :D

    30.09.98, kick-off 18.05. We won 1-0, Kai Nyyssonen scored just before half-time.

    Motherwell Team :

    Mikko Kaven

    Stephen McMillan

    Shaun Teale

    Michael Doesburg

    Jamie McGowan

    Simo Valakari

    Brian McClair

    Rob Matthaei

    Ian Ross

    Owen Coyle

    Kai Nyyssonen

    This is very precise

    Brian McClair in 1998 ?

  6. Scottish Cup semi-final replay Vs Celtic - Hampden Park, 1991

I was there, a mild April evening, we only had about half of the Rangers end and I think a young Irishman may have lifted the support that night

  7. ..one of my earliest memories was going to see us play away at Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Cup in about 75/76 season.

I was about 8yrs old and can remember being amazed at the size of our support. We seemed to take over the whole ground. It had something like a speedway or greyhound track round the pitch

U sure it was Cowdenbeath ?

I was a student in Edinburgh at the time and remember travelling to a cup game but I thought it was at Stenhousemuir. I rememember we had a big support and their ground was crumbling to pieces but they put up a fight and we won 3-2

  8. Wasn't the Rangers Emerson the ex-Middlesbrough one ?

I was working at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London when Middlesborough stayed when they were playing in the League Cup Final at Wembley.

Emerson was pretty much a law unto himself and they just seemed to let him do what he wanted. Night before the game when the rest of the team were tucked up in bed he was on the table next to me in the hotels Thai restaurant with his missus tucking into Thai green curry with a couple of Singha beers.

Next day he played really well

  9. I was at the Stoke game as well and it was pretty awesome seeing Gordon Banks. Actually, you might be able to help me on a question. Talking about great players, my brother said we played a Spanish team in an inauguration of the floodlights and he mentioned a player (name escapes me) who was playing that night for the Spanish team that was a legend. Do you (or anyone else) know anything about this game and/or who the player was? I'll try and find out from him (but he's a Celtic fan so won't be talking to me the noo lol).

My own personal experiences only go back to 1962 but here`s a start on the hunt, I`ll take a look at John Swinburne`s book ( History of The Steelmen 1886 - 1986 ) and see what I can come up with

  10. Frank Worthington played for Leeds and scored a cracker against us.

Gordon Banks performed heroics to restrict the well to a 1-0 victory over Stoke

I was at the Stoke game and Banks was magnificent that night, I still remember one save he made in the top right hand corner, he just seemed to fly through the air.

Another legendary keeper was Pat Jennings who played against us for Spurs in the Texaco cup alongside Mullery, Peters and Chivers.

Jennings holds the record for playing most times against Scotland - 19

Peters also scored in a World Cup Final

I suppose it has to be asked - Players who have played at Fir Park who have had top 20 hits ?

  11. I was at the Texaco cup game against Stoke, during the same era I remember seeing us gubbed by a very good Burnley team, think it was 0-3 and losing 0-1 to an Everton team with Joe Harper in.

    Right opponents, wrong home team.

Having convinced myself I`d been at these games I did a bit of research and discovered that Hearts played both in the Texaco Cup in 1973/74.

As I started college in Edinburgh at the same time I must have gone along to Tynecastle to watch the games

  12. Post above

Pic at top I recognise Keith MacRae with the red hair, Keith was at Lanark Grammar 5 years above me, whilst at school he played outfield and in goal for `Well reserves and made his first team debut in goal. Our PE teacher at the Grammer was Roger Hynd
