  1. Well boss Brown 'no' to second Dons offer

Craig Brown has revealed he turned down the chance to take over at Aberdeen out of loyalty to his players at Motherwell and reluctance to move too far from his family.

Aberdeen's determination to land Brown was underlined when chairman Stewart Milne made a second attempt to persuade him yesterday, having had a meeting on Tuesday which ended in disappointment.

Brown was flattered and promised to consider the renewed offer overnight, but he is certain to contact Milne today and tell him he will not be coming.

Former Scotland manager Brown, 70, was Aberdeen's first choice and along with assistant Archie Knox he met Milne, director of football Willie Miller and managing director Duncan Fraser in Glasgow.

At Brown's suggestion, the meeting took place at the office of his solicitor brother Jock.

Last night, the Well boss said he had been impressed by Milne and claimed the Aberdeen chairman did everything he could have done to make the offer attractive. He said: "You'd hardly get a bigger and better club outside the Old Firm, a club with bigger potential, than Aberdeen. It is a big club, a real football club.

"If everything else was equal I'd have done it, or if the response at Motherwell wasn't as good as it is, we'd jump into Aberdeen. But we have such a young and vibrant group of players here."

Even Aberdeen's superior fanbase and wage bill could not tempt Brown and Knox, not least because they have reached a stage in their careers where they are weary of moving around the country.

"Archie has done 15 moves already. My family's all in Ayrshire. My wee grandkids think Aberdeen's in Outer Mongolia," added Brown.

"Aberdeen's a smashing city, but on balance we thought, having thought the whole thing over, that it wasn't right."

Scottish Under-21 manager Stark and former Hibs manager John Hughes will inevitably move up the list of candidates for the Dons job now.

Hamilton's Billy Reid, Mixu Paatelainen at Kilmarnock, Gus MacPherson and Jocky Scott have also been linked with the post as well as several non-Scottish managers.

Another rumour had Scott and Alex Smith down to return in a resurrection of the co-managerial team which was in charge at Pittodrie from 1988 to 1991 and won two domestic cups

Meant this to be an edit to the other post, ooops...........!

More or less the same article was in todays Herald.. I myself am not quite convinced yet.

  2. Hope that they are made very welcome. Of course as you said, Motherwell has had decades to improve its town centre but it is much the same today as it was 30 years ago. Amazes me that the people of Lanarkshire have not made enough argument to get the council to make improvements. It disappoints me that the people have not forced change in all this time. Our town will look like a dump in comparison to Aalesund.

as one of their fans was quoted saying on thier forum after the draw, "Motherwell looks like a hole, but i look forward to drinking beer in the hole"

hopefully they'll have a rough idea of what to expect.

  3. That's shedding some light on it. Was that so hard?

I SAW half of the game, you had nothing in the way of attacking proficiency and had no substance in the middle of the park. Looking forward to controlling the game and destroying you next week. If theres a decent referee then you won't finish with 11 men on the field. Nice team of hatchet men you have.

I didn't see the game, but i hope to fuck that doesn't come back to haunt us.

  4. He's also on the list for Newcastle on that page.

Is there any chance Celtic are on the look out for new (and cheap) centre-backs after losing McManus and Caldwell last season?

fuck that! i'd rather he left on a free then headed down south than that manky lot take him for 200-300k.

  5. Article in the days sun about this Carlos Gazapo lad..

MOTHERWELL are set to take ex-Real Madrid kid Carlos Gazapo on trial.

The towering Spanish striker will join Craig Brown's squad when they report back for pre-season training on Monday.

Gazapo, 25, is a free agent after quitting Rayo Vallecano.

Well boss Brown confirmed: "We have one or two coming in on trial. Carlos is one player we will be taking a look at.

"He was top scorer for Rayo Vallecano and second top scorer in the Spanish Second Division two seasons ago.

"Injury prevented him from building on that last year.

"But he's fully fit now and he's coming to join us for a trial.

"He scored 20 goals in 28 games in season 2009/10 and his background is Real Madrid, he spent five years there as a kid.

"He went full time after leaving Madrid and he's someone we're going to have a look at."

Brown, just back from covering the World Cup for Al Jazeera, is working hard to try and strengthen his squad after losing Jim O'Brien, with Mark Reynolds also set to move on.

He hasn't given up hope of re-signing Everton duo John Ruddy and Lukas Jutkiewicz on loan - while Giles Coke has been set a June 30 deadline on the deal he's been offered.

Brown stressed: "I would like to get my squad together for July 9. That's the target and that's the ideal scenario.

"We have feelers out and players coming in on trial.

"We're still waiting to hear what is happening with John and Lukas. Giles is another one we'd like to keep and he's been offered a deal.

"I think he has one or two options to consider, he has until the end of the month to make his mind up."

  6. A little off topic here, but rather than start a new thread i'll just bump this in here.

Thinking of buying the home top from 94/96, y'know one of the pony yins.. but im no sure about sizing.. anybody know if there's much difference in say like this seasons top in a Large and that top in a Large?

  7. Home - Amber top (claret hoop or band), white/claret shorts, amber socks.

Away - Petrol blue top, white/petrol blue shorts, petrol blue socks.

    Perfect!!
