So, if we get beaten once in the opening four games, come April - ten months way - we'll be bottom six.

Even for a Motherwell fan, thats an impressive dedication to pessimism there.

Not at all, but realistically, our opening 4 fixtures are quite kind to us, it’s going to be a tough league this season and capitalizing on every opportunity will be vital

There is about 7 weeks till the transfer window closes.

I'd rather get the right guys than who ever is willing to sign now.

There’s also two weeks until the season starts and 4 games against opposition (before the window closes) that we need to be taking 8 points from if we’re serious about sitting in the top 6 next April…

Remember when we beat them 5-1?

That was thing in my mind last night. My takeaway from that match was that our linkup play was good in patches, we had pace and players prepared to go beyond the ball and break lines. We had absolutely none of that last night. We looked static, disjointed and devoid of creativity and leadership.
I understand that some say it’s only pre-season, which is correct, but it’s not hard to see that we are seriously lacking in key areas. I know some said O’Connor played well, he was fine, but there’s not a chance he’s ready for week in week out spl football - Lamie is still ricki fucking Lamie and neither Crawford nor lawless are good enough to be starting.
we’re missing two centre halves, an engine in the middle of the park, a central creative player and a winger. What that means effectively is missing a spine to the team and with two weeks until the league starts, that is highly worrying

Aye Liam Kelly would be a fantastic bit of business.

    Without doubt.
It will Leave us needing an experienced centre half and 2 central midfielders (also with quality) and potentially the outlook for the season changes.

On the topic of where the SPFL is in comparison with League One or Two down south, I once had a wee chat pre season with Ian Baraclough. I asked him where he thought we’d be if we were in the English leagues. His answer was along the lines of, “standard, mid to lower League One… budget, mid League Two”.

The comments of a man who, whilst a nice guy and won the playoff, was largely hopeless. Pinch of salt required

  6. Taylor is clearly very capable of playing in the spl and we’re going to need that. As mentioned previously, the lower league English signings have been very hit and miss in the last years however what they have in common is that they take some time to adjust and make the step (if they ever do). Taylor comes with seniority, knowledge of the league and is clearly less shite than Lamie (who, even I, have warmed to). Sign him up.

I'd be very surprised if we signed a combative midfielder, or at least I don't imagine it is a high priority, especially with Donnelly coming back, Mark O'Hara and Crawford both signed.

Maybe combative isn't the word. I'm very concerned that we need to fill a Campbell shaped hole and I don't believe that O'Hara, Donnelly and especially Crawford are up to it.

  8. With 3 forwards in the door so far and 4-7 still to come, it will be interesting to see the next priorities.

IMO, we still need a goalkeeper, 2 centre half's, 2 creative central midfielders, a combative centre midfielder in the Campbell mode and another forward.

With matches starting in the next 3/4 weeks, we will need players to arrive pretty soon in order to make sure we hit the ground running.

Really? A lot worse appears on here. Think it’s fair to say we’ve finished it. One poster went to uni, one went to the school of life.

    We’ve signed more than 2.

Are you sure? Did we sign more than 2 or was it fewer?  Teach me wise one, sensei

Bore off. Point out where I’m in the wrong? If it’s as simplistic as you make out, Burrows should be fearing for his job or creating a space for you in the boardroom.

I never said you were wrong. You insinuated I was wrong and I agreed and knelt before your great knowledge. Have a good evening!

It naive as your amateur mathematics don’t stack up…

    Thanks…

I’ll flick through those economics books from my many Uni years and see if I can’t get to grips with simple deduction again.

You realise you have increased the number of Google searches into the Maltese national squad from the ML1 area exponentially? I haven't looked but I'm sure some will.

The signing of Amaluzor has caused a bit of consternation on here. That's the market we're shopping in. The talk of a smaller squad with higher average salaries is naive, given the injuries we had last season. Am I enthused by the signing of a winger from National League South? Not particularly but I'm not sure he'll be a nailed on starter, possibly a plan B? Perhaps the reason I'm not as vexed as some on here is that he's already been training with us. We've not simply judged him on his performances at that level but had a look at him in the context of our squad.

Which kind of brings me to you pointing out we have a few trialists in at the moment. Trialists can often be seen as a negative but going forward, it may be something we rely upon more heavily. If you accept that pretty much every signing we make is going to be a gamble to some degree, a way to improve your odds is to see them in training up against the players you already have and also how they interact with the rest of the squad.

We might need to get used to a large proportion of our future signings being trialists...

Can I ask in what way talk of higher salaries is naive?

    1. We have been open about maintaining playing budgets from last season
    2. We released/had leave 25 players from the first team squad
    3. Alexander went public with saying he wanted a smaller squad an aimed to bring in 7-10 players (we have already brought in 2).
    4. That leaves between 5-8 players still to arrive who will be sharing the salaries of 23 players between them (if indeed we are maintaining playing budgets.
