  1. Game never quite recovered from the long VAR check and Kevin Clancy's whistle happy performance.

Some really nice stuff mixed with some really poor stuff but I think we edged the match even though Kilmarnock dominated spells in the second half.

For me though they didn't really look like scoring while we looked dangerous going forward and Van Veen might easily have had a hat-trick today.

It's highly unlikely Kilmarnock and Dundee Utd win most of their games and if they do they are beating Ross County and St Johnstone who are both below us anyway.  They also have to play each other.

We should be fielding youngsters every week.

Hope Dundee Utd win today.  They were 3/1 to beat St. Johnstone!

Did it ever occur to you that it's highly likely that the majority of our Academy squad won't be good enough to make the step up to the 1st team. If we get 2 or 3 from that squad who are good enough that will be a good return. We've given Cornelius and Johnston their chance and it's worked out well, maybe Miller or Ross will follow them, but that's about all.

A study came out recently where Scottish football was identify as one of the worst leagues in Europe for youth development.

We're miles behind and attitudes like the above is one of the reasons why, which, incidentally, is based on what?

Not every academy player will make it but we have to develop youth players much better than we do and that means giving more players opportunities at younger ages more of the time.

Currently Scottish football is, quite frankly, pathetic at developing youth.

Importing dross on the other hand....

  4. Lamie was fine last season he was just one of those players who was badly effected by the dip in form this term.

He also did fine when he came on as a sub a couple of weeks ago and it didn't effect our performance at all.

First choice should be Casey and Butcher but we need to remember Butcher is 33 next season.  So is McGinn.

So you'd like to see the average age brought down a bit if we are playing 3 at the back.

This is why talk of us already being safe and suggestions that we field the youngsters today are absolutely ludicrous. Apart from the points gap being cut should the scenario of Killie and Dundee Utd both win today, there is also the issue of confidence and momentum. Both of them would be hugely lifted whilst we would be the opposite and panic could well begin to set in.

Ross County will absolutely be in the bottom 2 so there is only really one spot teams need to avoid.

  6. I like this years kit.

I kinda wish we'd swapped the shorts around with the home and away kits though.

Big advocate for white shorts.  That's our colours and there is no getting away from it.

We should have a hoop most of the time but I think it's OK to have something different once in a while.

Just not anything like the 'harlequin' kit......

You still had to put the ball in the net, without looking, were games higher scoring? Also per era these guys outperformed others, producing the goods is producing the goods.

The only stats I could find (although I was using Yahoo for some reason rather than Google) were for the English league but the Top 25 best average goals stats were all pre 1960 and 14 of the 25 were pre war.  So I think it probably was easier to score.

In the 1800's they were averaging almost 5 goals per game and then up to about the 1970s it was around 3 - 3.5.  Now it seems to be averaging around 2.4 to 2.8.

I mean I don't think the dimensions of the goals has changed but I'm sure the average height of a goalkeeper is probably about half a foot taller these days!

    Stats, fucking love them.

    1. Hugh Ferguson 284 in 301, 0.94
    2. Iain St John -80 in 113, 0.7
    3. William MacFadyen 235 in 387, 0.62
    4. Michael Higdon - 40 in 72, 0.55
    5. Dixie Deans - 78 in 152, 0.51
    6. Wullie Pettigrew - 80 in 166, 0.48
    7. KVV -29 in 65, 0.45
    8. Tommy Coyne 57 in 132, 0.43
    9. Louis Moult 39 in 91, 0.42
    10. Pat Quinn 83 in 196, 0.42
    11. John Sutton - 66 in 174, 0.38
    12. Chris Porter 23 in 59, 0.38
    13. Lucas Jukey - 12 goals in 33 ,0.36
    14. Scott McDonald 66 in 191, 0.34
    15. James McFadden - 37 in 112, 0.33
    16. John Spencer 18 in 54, 0.33
    17. Bobby Graham 37 in 132, 0.28
    18. Dougie Arnott 59 in 240, 0.24
    19. David Clarkson 49 in 226, 0.22
    20. Steve Kirk 63 in 301, 0.21
    21. Dirk Lehmann 9 in 43, 0.21
    22. Ross McCormack 10 in 48, 0.2
    23. Henrik Ojamaa 14 in 73, 0.19
    24. Jamie Murphy 34 in 176, 0.19
    25. Lee McCulloch 21 in 124, 0.17

Without wanting to take anything away from the pre war era football it's worth nothing that in Ferguson/MacFadyen era teams lined up with 5 forwards and 2 defenders.

I think he'd be incredibly stupid to do that. Clubs who are looking to buy a player do more than just check his recent form and statistics. They check the personality, how they act and their attitude. If he's going in the huff and being problematic with us, potential buying clubs could think that he'd just as easily do the same with them, causing dressing room issues and so forth.

You Tube brought up Scotland's play off match against Serbia, a mere three years ago, and there was Leigh Griffiths knocking home a penalty in a Scotland shirt.

Now he's playing for Wodonga Platypuses.  Or something.

Not much of a jump for me, but I sympathise with others, for whom the increase is more substantial. I can recall in years gone, with a young family, agonising about whether I could afford a season ticket. I always did though.

Cinemas now costing £14.50 for an adult and £10.50 for a child.  Concerts at the Hydro for bigger names costing on average £60 - £200 for 2-3 hours.

The club's energy bill will have surged; staff will rightly ask for increased wages. As you say its a sign of the times.

You just compared going to the football to other activities I don't do any more based on cost.

I will renew but probably in August.....when I've saved up a bit.

However I know quite a few who have stopped going because of increasing cost/declining standard.

It's a difficult balancing act for clubs like Motherwell with relatively few fans and rising costs but we have to be very carefully not to price what few fans we have from coming along.

3 home games from 5, can't argue with that, I reckon another 4 or 5 points  is all we need and I think we will get that in the 1st 2 games, Killies away form is brutal and St J are in freefall.

We're 10 clear of 12th, so no chance We're finishing bottom with 5 to play, and with our goal difference effectively 7 clear of the playoff place, so 1 win should see us safe from that as well.

No team has ever finished in the bottom 2 with 40 points so 1 win will almost certainly keep us up.  Also our goal difference is massively superior to all the other teams so two draws gives us a 99.9999999% of doing it.

If you are still worried at that point you probably don't go outside in case you get struck by lightning.

  12. Interesting to see all the hoopla over St Mirren making Top 6 when we scored more goals and conceded less than them.

In fact we had the best defensive record in the league after Rangers and Celtic.

Of course it's all about points but still kind of indicates we were a little on the unlucky side this term.

  13. Very frustrating game.

Dundee Utd's second half performance probably shaded the game for them but we had so many chances to end the match 2-0 and didn't take any of them.

Was impossible to say if our disallowed goal was good from my position in the stands, thought the first penalty probably was one although Fletcher is absolutely looking for it.

Didn't play badly but we were down a level on recent performances.

  14. A win more or less guarantees survival so we should go into this one with complete confidence and the bit between our teeth.

Dundee Utd have scored 5 goals in the last 9 matches from open play.  We've scored 14.

Dundee Utd haven't kept a clean sheet in 2023.  We've kept 3 from our last 6.

Kettlewell would be insane to change a wining team and style. That’s the simple response to those making comments about certain players being sidelined.

In this league if you only have one 'style' your success will be short lived as other teams will figure it out.

Happens all the time when managers have a good run in one set of fixtures and then when they play teams a second time round they are sussed.  It's one of the biggest reasons why no team, outside the OF, can really put together any kind of consistency.

Also, it's possible to have a base structure and then adapt that depending on what is happening in a match.

That's really the key to being a good manager.  Making intelligent changes in response to the flow of the match.  Not rigidly sticking to one system for 90 minutes every week.

I'm not saying McKinstry should be starting matches, as has rightly been said we are in form right now, but I don't think it's literally impossible for him to play a part in this side.

For so many seasons we haven't expected much from a direct free kick and now we have Goss, KVV and Slatts.

I'm presuming our new manager must have had an input to this turnaround.

I've been going to games since 1982 and the first scored free kick goal I actually remember was, I think, Eric Garcin!

There was certainly a long period when we didn't score any.  I remember Stevie Kirk going close a few times including an excellent Jim Leighton save at Easter Road.

If any one wants to refresh my memory feel free!

  17. Van Veen played a lot of the 2nd half out wide left.

I think you can make an argument that we would have been more effective with Mandron withdrawn, Van Veen more central and McKinstry going wide.  Especially at 3-0 you can surely experiment a bit.

There are a few players who have been more or less patched under Kettlewell.  Tierney, McKinstry, Crankshaw, Danzaki, Blaney etc.

It's a results business but I think if it's purely a footballing decision McKinstry has been a little bit hard done by.

  18. Comfortable win and some good spells of play.

Bit gutted Van Veen didn't get his hat trick.

We are looking decent with quite a few 'nailed on'  players now all though you'd expect a few of them to move on during the summer.

Kelly looks comfortable again, back 3 has been excellent (hopefully Butcher isn't badly injured), midfield is actually working now with the weak link no longer there and Van Veen has been in sensational form.

Definitely something to build on there, fingers crossed we can hold on to VV and Johnston, although I wouldn't expect so.
