  1. I don't know what our bonus scheme was at that time, but we have had spells where the basic wage was relatively low, but with incentives for appearances, goals, wins etc.

However, when Skippy moved to us initially, his career was on the slide and was looking to get back on track. So I imagine he was just happy to get a game at that point.

I'd heard (from someone who knew Softy) that in Tommy McLean's last couple of seasons, every player was on £15,000 a year and an alleged £450 a point bonus and further league position bonuses. The only differences between players was supposed to be in signing on fees.

  2. Bobby Watson was my first Motherwell hero. There have been others in the ensuing forty odd years, but not many to match him. Perhaps Joe Wark and Willie Pettigrew, but that would be about it. I realise that this has a lot to do with being at an impressionable age and the circumstances of the time, but I can't help but wonder who the young 'well fans of today will look to for their inspiration. We have been lucky in recent years to have players like Lasley and Hammell who have been magnificent servants to the club, but it strikes me that their like will become rarer as the game becomes more and more about money and the merry go round of players coming and going increases. I guess I have been lucky, that my father was a Motherwell fan all his life and took me to games as a youngster, and that I have seen the players that I have seen.a d as we get older, I wonder if it is the case that every supporter sees things change and hankers for the good old day? As my Dad used to say" Watson is a good player, but you should have seen Charlie Aitken." Reminiscing time over.

    Thanks Dad.

    Great Post !!

I'm obviously from the same era as you, and to me, Pettigrew, Wark and Vic Davidson were the heroes in my young eyes. Again, thanks Dad for dragging me along, cause I really wanted to go and see Aberdeen LOL (Probably because I had a football card with Zoltan Varga on it !), but then again, I was 10 or 11 at the time.

  3. Maybe they could use the season ticket money to...

Hang on, wasn't that on the news recently?

It was ! King was all over the news saying that all of the season ticket money would be 'put into the playing squad'. isn't that pretty much what all clubs do anyway ??? Deluded h**s reckon it means an 11 mill transfer fee budget, I reckon it was king talk for covering the wage bill

  4. They'll bring in over £10m in season ticket money this summer. So they'll have cash to spend.

They also had a wage bill of over £10 mil for last season, which, presumably, they'll have to budget for next season, using up the season ticket money and then some.

  5. Assists are one of those American imports they use to make their native sports more interesting and their fantasy sports leagues more profitable.

Like all statistics, it has some use in some circumstances, but doesn't come close to giving a complete picture.

You should look up 'USA Soccer Guy' on Fudbook......would probably be right up your street, humour wise

  6. The question no one seems to be asking in the whole Moult/Rangers scenario is........where the fuck are they going to get half a mill from ? They are heavily indebted and basically, have started having a fire sale, which may yet be a closing down sale. If any such deal goes ahead, I would hope our board would have the good sense to demand full payment up front.

  7. Yes was good tonight but will be offski as not consistent enough for me and 1 good game dosnt make up for the rubbish we've had most of season .

Not asking to start an argument, but how many times this season has Ainsworth been played as a winger. When we scudded County earlier in the season, he played a blinder and was dropped next game by McGhoo. Robinson has been trying to play him behind the strikers. I would reckon (although I don't know for sure) he's played/started less than 6 games this season in his natural position.

The Scottish cup win was great for them, no doubt. However hibs are what? the 5/6th biggest team in the country? semis and finals should be the normal. As for their attendances, they have rocketed this year, this is what happens when a big team starts winning, we've seen it before and we'll see it next time if a large team goes down. If Dundee Utd hadn't been so shite their crowds would have rocketed anaw.

^^ This. Hibs had massive crowds when McLeish was in charge in the first division because they were pumping teams week in week out and were a cut above everything else in that division with players like Sauzee and Latapy.
