  1. I'm not overly convinced by Rose in midfield but thats twice now i've seen him and McHugh together and dont think the two of them can play together, i think Bigi works better next to Carl in midfield, so i reckon that Rose and McHugh are possibly too similar as they are defensive midfielders and would be better playing one or the other in midfield. Could be wrong but thats what i took from the game yesterday.

Yeah, Rose was the least convincing player on the park for me yesterday and think if Bigi had played we would have been more assured in the middle.

Following in the footsteps of a long list of 6ft + players we have had over the years that are absolutely hopeless in the air!

  2. Likewise, think Dunne done OK yesterday. He has a bit of pace, decent enough in the air and his composure is better than some other defenders over the years. His slight down fall is he is very prone to a very wild pass - but if he had solid distribution as well he wouldn't be playing with us!

Think the back three from yesterday of Dunne, Kipre and Hennigan all compliment each other well and we are definitely more assured at the back than we were for the majority of last season.

  3. Was there yesterday and left utterly frustrated, mainly thanks to the mason in the black!

First 20mins aside, we were on top for the majority of the game and missed three guilt edge chances from Moult, Bowman & Fisher. Thought Frear and Kipre were the stand-outs, with special mention to Cadden and Tait. As others have said, if we keep up that level of performance then we should be OK.

However, not 100% sold on our strategy of whipping balls into the box. Everything yesterday came from the wings, which I find a little strange when we have only the one striker battling it out with a handful of defenders to get on the end of it. A lot of wasted crosses as well, and would like to see us mix it up a bit every now.

  4. I think it's worked out by a formula for previous years at the club as a youth rather than a tribunal. So they would know the cost more or less.

It's not the case in UK.

They are indeed factors, but it is a tribunal that decide how these are interpreted based on a case by case basis. It's not a formulaic process. In the first instance, clubs are encouraged to negotiate between themselves and if that is not possible, it is passed to the PFCC to determine the figure, but it runs risks.

Famously Burnley knocked back an offer of £12m compensation from Liverpool for Danny Ings in 2015 and forced it to tribunal where they ruled the fee to be £6.5m plus add-ons.

Explains it better here with a few examples. A very familiar name listed.

  5.

The benchmark is what an English team were prepared to pay for a striker who wasn't as good as Moult. How the valuation was reached doesn't matter.

But Leeds signed him and then the compensation was worked out afterwords either by negations with both clubs or by a tribunal process such as the PFCC, who then determine the fee based on numerous factors. They essentially offered Erwin a contract with no idea of how much they would have to pay. Sure, they could try and guess at the figure, but counts for little, with the calculations made by tribunals not seeming to follow any real set of rules or guidelines.

If memory serves correctly, I'm sure Leeds were not too impressed with eventual fee set.

So don't think the fee we received for Erwin offers any real indication as to Moults value to us.

  6. Moult's better than Erwin was when he sold him to Leeds, so that's a decent benchmark to work out a value.

Sold? Did he not leave under freedom of contract and the money we received was compensation determined by a third party??

    Not a great benchmark.

  7. Likewise, a absolutely steller debut can create a false sense of illusion with both the player and the fans, and that can lead to them failing to cut it week in week out.

While not a youngster, while never forget certain David Ferrere's debut with a 2nd half hat trick from midfield. Remember leaving the ground that night thinking we had unearthed an absolutely gem of a player, yet was completely ineffective in the other dozen of so games he played.

  8. After much pondering submitted my top 10 which is amazingly very skewed in favour of defensive positions rather than attacking ones for some reason I can't quite explain.

Hardest decision was leaving out Higdon.

Went on players I have seen in the flesh (circa 1988 onwards) so a lot of proper legends (an most likely contenders) such as Wark and St. John were excluded.

EDIT: On a side note, if there is ever an Off the Air 4, then maybe a vote on favourite overseas players of all time as that would through out a few belters.

  9. Just watched the highlights.

Bowman took his goal very well. I think if he can get a few goals in the friendlies and league cup games it will be a massive confidence boost and he may prove to be a decent player for us.

  10. Works out quite nicely that "my local game" is scheduled for 2 days after I come back from holiday on the 10th August!

Not the worst fixture list ever. Should be looking at a minimum of 12pts before start of October and game via Accies.

  11. Decent interview with Keef in the S*n today.

Interesting revelations that it appears Robinson gave him an ultimatum over the post and he has taken a pay cut for the position.

Pasted below so you don't have to click on the scummy rag.

KEITH LASLEY thought reaching the decision to hang up his boots was tough enough.

Then the Motherwell legend faced up to the searching question from his son Alfie — ‘Dad, who’s going to wear No14 now?’.

It almost reduced the new Fir Park No2 to tears.

Gritty midfielder Lasley, 479 games in the claret and amber over two spells from 1999, ended last season in decent form.

That made his retirement from playing all the harder to accept, but it was the condition of the job offer from Well boss Steve Robinson which the 37-year-old couldn’t turn down.

Uefa Pro-licence holder Lasley had been working to this moment for 11 years and after being unveiled as Robinson’s right-hand man yesterday, he said: “There have been a lot of emotions going through my head over the last while.

“I feel as if I’ve not really had a chance to take it all in, the fact my playing career’s now over.

“I still feel relatively fit and able, but there were a lot of different factors in my decision.

“Ultimately, I felt that I came to the right one. Coaching is something I’m very passionate about.

“It’s something I’ve been planning for a long time. It’s not been an overnight decision.

“I’m breaking it to my kids gently. The first thing my wee boy said to me was ‘Who’s going to be No14 next year?’.

“I nearly started crying. He’s actually No14 for his boys club. I don’t know who is going to wear No14 for Motherwell. There’s nobody filling it at the moment — and I’m going to try and keep it that way!”

Lasley has captained the Steelmen, enjoyed a richly- deserved testimonial, been a title runner-up, appeared in a Scottish Cup Final and played in Europa League and Champions League qualifiers.

He has even scored for Well. No, honestly.

But Lasley still can’t believe all he has achieved since turning up for a trial 18 years ago while a building site sparky.

He said: “I’ve not had the chance yet to properly look back on my playing career.

“Just getting a chance to play for this club was fantastic for me and a real privilege. I’ve grown to love this place.

“Everybody knows I came here from a building site and thinking I’d be back there in six months.

“So to still be standing here and look back on being captain of the club, played so many times, Europe, cup finals and now coach-assistant manager, well, it’s incredible for me.

“I was an electrician. I left school to serve my apprenticeship and then I qualified.

“I worked on various establishments in Glasgow, factories and whatever, putting lights up and that kind of stuff.

“I got the call from Billy Davies to come in for a trial and that obviously went well.

“But it was a late time for me to come into the game. At that point I’m thinking ‘I’ll maybe go and do this for a year, then go back and get my old job again’.

“However, when I take myself back to that point, and to now be standing here talking to you guys, it’s amazing how much I’ve been involved in with Motherwell.”

Fir Park Robinson’s faith in him means plenty for Lasley who accepted a wage CUT from his playing deal to take up the key backroom role.

He said: “When he offered the role to me it was great to know he had that confidence in me.

“I hope taking the pay cut shows how far ahead I’m now thinking. Coaching is something I want to get into.

“I’m obviously young into it. Come back and see me in six months — I might be baldy and with a fat belly and ready for chucking it!

“But right now I’m full of enthusiasm.”

Lasley also knows there will be first-teamers at the club now looking at him differently.

He said: “I’ve crossed the line over to the dark side.

“I’ve got a good relationship with the senior players and the younger boys too. I hope that’s not going to change, although I know it has to to a certain extent and I want it to.

“I hope the level of respect both ways will stay the same, though.

“It’s not that I instantly want respect because I’m a coach. I need to earn that and show them I can do the job.

“I’ve had the same corner of the dressing for years, my wee shrine! There’s a wee walking stick at my place with my slippers. That will be filled. But we’ve got to move on.”

Boss Robinson added: “Keith’s enthusiasm, desire and passion for Motherwell is obvious.

“He had a playing contract that was triggered last season, but I spoke to him when he came back from holiday to discuss his options.

“I told him I wanted him to be beside me, but I also told him I didn’t want him to play.

“I felt if he was going to be my assistant then he had to fully commit to it. That was vital.

“Financially, it wasn’t as good for him, but he showed his commitment to me and the club.”

  12. As a side point to get us back on topic...

If/when we get a new mascot, the club could potentially copyright that but only if they agree full ownership with whoever designs them. A few clubs have copyright on their mascots and sell merchandise under there design. Again though, for me would be a bit pointless as don't imagine a club would want to copy our mascot as they will probably use their own.

  13.

    Prove it.

Give us a written description of how you deal with a copyright issue every other week at least.

    What's involved?

You were the one who brought it up...where is your proof, or have we just to bow down to your expertise as an globetrotting, former taxi-driver, marketing guru??

    But hey, I'll entertain you...

The company I work for currently holds copyright on over 200 separate products, which in my role as Marketing & CRM Manager I have to manage. Additionally we also have over 1500 images of the products which we own artistic copyright on automatically as well as virtual renders, videos and 360º images. Not to mention the promotional materials, instructions, brochures, etc.

While the product design infringement is less frequent an issue, the use of the images is not. Our competitors will regularly use them and part of my job is to monitor there use online. In the case of where unauthorised use is identified, I serve a copyright notice to the parties involved. Most of the time, that serves as a deterrent and the images are removed. When this is unsuccessful I then make a claim under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act to the hosting site who will always act and remove the images. If we get to this point, or indeed if it is a repeat offender, I will pass their details to our legal team who will pursue damages - something that they have succeeded on in numerous occasions, with one company being fined £45,000 earlier this year.

On top of that, I studied copyright quite intensively at University as part of my course and it featured heavily when undertaking my CIM accreditation. As someone who maintains a freelance portfolio, it is something I have advised on a great deal as well.

As you have been told, the club did not create the viking chant and first step of copyright protection is proving without a shadow of a doubt that you created it followed by a process that allows counter claims to be made if applicable. Once granted, to prove copyright you have to have someone accountable for the breach. As mentioned, a crowd of fans chanting/singing a song does not make the club they support liable for the action of individuals, and unless they can identify the individual at fault (ie not a crowd, the person who started the chant) action is simply impossible.

This utter minefield is the reason clubs much larger than us don't seek copyright on songs. It's a non-starter.

Furthermore, for the club to even investigate this avenue would costs a great deal of money in legal fees which would be wasted. Much better spent on e-mail marketing, no?! Or at least the playing budget.

To conclude, your grasp of copyright laws is clearly, in my honest opinion from a wealth of experience, incorrect. Once again, you have opened your mouth without any knowledge to back it up, and that is why you are constantly called out on it. However, I would be most delighted to hear how you deal with plagiarism/copyright a few times per year?!

Going forward, I'd be more than happy for you to pass any of your "marketing guru" ideas pass me for some fact checking in a PM before you post for to save yourself the embarrassment of looking like an idiot (again).

  14.

As for your digital marketing comment, I deal with copyright infringement and plagiarism issues several times a year.

Have you ever? even once in your life?

Would you know where to start?

I tend to deal with it every other week at the least.

Can safely say, your talking shite. (Again).

  15. One of my all time favourites to pull on the famous claret and amber, probably the only Motherwell captain that will lead us out to the Champions League theme.

Bit sad that I won't see him on the park again, but the time was right. Like others, glad he is still about the club and wish him nothing but success as our new assistant. Unlike Faddy before him, he has the qualifications and an unquestionably passion & commitment to our wee club, no reason why he can thrive in his new role.

    Thanks for the memories Keef!
