  1. I think, to be fair, QoS v Rangers is probably the tie of the round. QoS have a shout in that one.

You think so? Hmmm..... I would have said that either Ross County or Dundee v Aberdeen would have been top billing - and made more interesting viewing on the BBC before QoS and Rangers.

As for us tonight, interesting to see who makes it from the four who were doubtful and what the team selection is thereafter. I think they still only have 5 subs in this rather than the 7 in SPL games so Gannon may have to think a wee bit more about his subbies too.

Home win. May take extra-time and penalties but home win nonetheless fingers crossed.

  2. Depends how you define the term local I suppose doesn't it?

For me local is Lanarkshire and if you are talking Lanarkshire you are talking Airdrie. I find there's more hostility with them than Accies. With Hamilton and Motherwell being so close and a fair number of our fans coming from that side of the town there's a lot more interaction and an understanding of each other's teams. I know of quite a lot of instances if we've had no game folk going to Hamilton in the past to see them.

With Airdrie though there's almost universal animosity towards us which is reciprocated more readily than with any stick that comes our way from Hamilton.

  3. Any whispers about McGarry departing yesterday at Tannadice?

Got an email from a mate who's an Ayr fan who had heard he might be going there on loan.

I don't even know if its a possibility and what the rules are regards loan players outwith the window but that's what he'd heard.

  4. It will be interesting to see how many turn up for the Inverness game.

Despite the drastic cut in price, I imagine you'll be lucky to get much more than 4,000.

League Cup attendances are generally down on league games for almost all teams drawn at home but I think we tend not to drop just as much as others because we have the first cup game ticket where applicable and allied to that where the other team has been agreeable John Boyle has tried to reduce the prices at about every League Cup game I can remember.

2818 for the 2-2 league game at the end of last season incidently

  5. Also heard a bit on the radio yesterday that Alba would now be available on BBC I-Player.

I stand to be correct but I think previously it was only on Sky and Freesat but not Virgin or Freeview?

  6. I was in the POD yesterday also and was appalled to hear their chant about hating the Tartan Army. I expect some of them were actually part of the Tartan Army when we played Macedonia and Holland so why they sing songs against their own country is beyond me. At least it made a pleasant change before they went back to their usual sectarian outbursts!!

I don't think we can gripe too much about that particular issue given Kenny Miller and David Weir were being singled out for stick on the back of their efforts for Scotland in the last week.

And I'm sure if pressed the folk singing anti-Tartan Army stuff would likely suggest they are British as it states in the their passports rather than Scottish blah de blah etc.

  7. Before I go on to the game - in terms of the Cooper Stand - is it not the case that the laddies and lassies that attend the Saturday (and possibly Sunday) morning coaching schools ran by the club usually get entry to all the 'Well games free of charge - with the exception of visits from Rangers and Celtic. The section closest to the Main Stand is usually 3/4 full and could possibly account partially for the apparent lack of take up of Cooper seats.

As for the game though while there's a tinge of regret about not taking the full 3 points there were a few significant markers laid down.

Albeit it was only a small fear I did have a concern at the back of my mind that some of the youngsters may be overawed by the occasion, we lost heavily and a lot of the confidence and exuberance built up recently would have been lost.

I'm glad to say it was entirely the opposite and I'm sure Jim Gannon will be drumming it into them that they have proved their ability and they should have no fear no matter who they are playing against.

If there were any remaining doubts at all by anyone outside Fir Park that these guys are in that team on merit and not simply through necessity then that has surely been blown away yesterday.

It was evident in the past under McGhee and again yesterday but the difference in style between Motherwell and Rangers was stark at times. Rangers may arguably be a better team than us, they may be more powerful, effective, clinical, they may be more successful but a better footballing side they most certainly are not.

The way the ball was sprayed about the park at times was fantastic in contrast to their tactic of getting into the box quickly and hope it falls to Boyd. I'm sure they won't be, but their fans really should be irked that a team built using a fraction of the resources was able to outpass so readily so often.

A bold selection or two from Gannon that paid dividends so a good point from a right good game. Can't be unhappy with that at all.

  8. We have contacted the SFA regarding your query and their response is as follows:

"Having spoken to our Referee Development Officer I have been advised that category one referees are allocated to SPL games purely on an experience basis. So the most experienced referees are allocated to what is deemed to be the toughest fixtures of the weekend".

Although they didn't go into specific details about who selects them and how they determine who the most experienced refs are, it at least gives some further info.

    Thanks

    www.SPLrefs.com

Good effort! Cheers for taking the time to find our and post your findings.

At least it gives you an inkling as to why they have made the selections they do.

    Thanks again

  9. I guess only those who were at the press conference will know what exactly was asked, in what context and what the response would have been.

I don't doubt that there will be separate agendas at work here in both accounts. Clearly our official site is duty bound to push the positive side of anything said whilst the tabloids often try to make anything not directly relating to the Old Firm as bite sized and easy to understand for the run of the mill Old Firm fan - who ofcourse make up the vast majority of their readership.

The way pish like "ex-hoops starlet", "former Gers hitkid" get included in articles about players to attempt to bring some relevance and interest to the bulk of the readers.

In this case we have Giles Coke. It doesn't take too much reading between the lines to see the line the Record has gone for. Giles who they'll be thinking? Okay son you don't play for Rangers or Celtic but you've come to Scotland. Clearly then you must either aspire to play for them or are here to play against them. And the angle of the article is born.

  10. 1st Chapelhall BB's for me. We never had the Anchor Boys then - it was the Pioneers - a quite bizarre outfit that consisted of a velvet blue bow tie, white shirt and blue jumper. On to the Junior section from there, then to Senior section and was an officer for a bit. Gregor Sanders brother I think was on the same course at Carronvale.

....and no thanks to Jim Leighton. Great keeper for Scotland but never really my cup of tea.

  11. Ongoing as far as I know Ballso.

I'm only really involved with the player profile side of it but some of the ideas that were in planning would spruce that section up really nicely.

The hectic start to the season with all the European games in quick succession put a lot stuff on the backburner but I'm sure Flow will be able to update you more.

  12. Apologies for not posting the ref for your game against Rangers earlier. Thanks to pop84 for posting it. -_-

We'll try and find out from the SFA what criteria, if any, is used for the selection of referees.

I'll post an update on this thread if we get an answer.

    Thanks

Good stuff, cheers for running with it. I have no axe to grind about any particular appointment just curious, now that the thought has popped into my head, to see if there is actually any method behind it.

    Thanks again.

  13. Only gripe I have is that I wish Jim O'Brien would stop critising other players for not making the correct pass or taking the option that suits him. It seems to me and this is only my opinion that he never makes a mistake but everybody else does.

Stands back and awaits abuse because he criticised hero JOB :)

I remember him screaming at Saunders against Llanelli in Airdrie in the second half after a similar example to the above. I think he got hooked about 2 minutes later and remember thinking that he might not be Gannon's cup of tea.

But while he's clearly not without his faults, he's made a fair bit of progression under Gannon.

  14. I'm not going to go down the "Oh no, woe, misery, woe....blah de blah" route but MacDonald's selection for the 2nd time in 4 games has made me wonder how these guys actually get selected for games.

Genuinely its something I've never really given any thought to.

I mean how many refs do the SFA have in the pool?

I assume its not just names out of a hat so how do they decide who to select for each game? Is there a criteria? Who selects them?

    Quite curious.

Where are these SPLrefs.com posters when you need them!! :)

  15. W.o.T.

I would never say a Motherwell game's a waste of time. Clearly there are varying degrees of importance of games and this would be some way down the scale but I'd disagree that its a waste of time.

The game allowed Gannon a further opportunity to allow his new team to gel - remember its still in a relative infancy, it gave the guys on the fringe of the team a run out, it give Moutaouakil a chance to bed in before his competitive debut, it allowed Jutkiewicz another opportunity to build up an understanding with his new team-mates and the opportunity to showcase another promising youngster in Jamie Pollok.

Your allegiance to another English side influencing your opinion perhaps Special?

  16. Celtic sign a has-been Chinaman from Charlton and it's pages and pages in the sports pages. Motherwell sign an exciting young French player from Charlton and there are a couple of paragraphs buried inside.

    It was always thus.

I've had a wry smile about that one too. Scotland Today had an ridiculously poor quality youtube video on after the deadline had passed on Tuesday in a desperate attempt to show some footage - and we had the rather pathetic sight of their reporter Gerry whatisface trying to chase after him yesterday getting blanked all the way.

And the guy hasn't even signed for them yet ;)

  17. Invershneck fans on their forum are extremely confident of coming down here and getting through with ease! Definetly still suffering from that big-club syndrome that recently relegated clubs clearly do. I know they should be quietly confident, but they way they are talking you'd think they were in the Quarters already. Time to shut up a few Northern traps!

Be fair Ricky, regardless of the circumstances be us top or bottom of the table, on a blistering or awful run of form I can't ever remember you predicting anything other than a positive outcome for MFC before a game.

Maybe there's a few liked minded Caley fans who can't see past their own team getting a result?

Tricky tie but a winnable tie. Pleased its at home too and also that Gannon, from his comments appears to be taking the competition seriously.
