  1. Could be the last time ye see the well in europe for 20 year ye never know and if we win 4 nll you'll be pissed off you never went.

    Keep the faith

I agree! For me Motherwell games in Europe are to be treasured and cherished and never be taken for granted as you simply don't know when the next season we'll qualify might be.

  2. Wasn't sure to believe him. Taking a photo of 'Someone (half way)famous' and then saying, "cheers, who the fuck are you?" doesn't always tend to bring the best answers.

Andy - you're clearly fortunate enough never to have experienced the 45 minute wait in the queue in St Vincent Street post office in the town where the said actor is on a DVD advertising the post offices wares - in a loop on no less than two different screens.

  3. Didn't Wee Spenny cost us more than Gaag? £700k sticks in my head.

Yeah Gullane, I've seen anything from £500,000 - £700,000 mentioned for Spencer's fee.

Only mentioned the Van der Gaag fee as someone had asked about it earlier in the thread, wasn't claiming it to be the biggest fee.

  4. Ok, I'll call it a day with this one. A more resounding victory for Ruddy we'll be unlikely to see all season I would guess.

Craigan second (perhaps dubiously) with Slane and Coke sharing third.

Decided to go with the votes as they stood despite concerns about questionable votes. If folk are registered then I suppose they are entitled to vote as they please. There's some mischief making every game with one or two of the votes but over the season I don't see it having a bearing on our overall winner.....unless Craggs wins it by a point or something at which point I'm sure I'll be reminded of my bold statement above!

  5. According to the official site Slane is a member of the under 19 squad, Forbes, Archdeacon and Murphy are first team squad players.

That should all get sorted in due course Jim. I believe there's a revamp of the official site in the offing and the squad lists will be updated as part of that.

Would likely have been done sooner but with the Euro games taking up so much of the club's focus the revamp has had to take a back-seat, albeit temporarily.

  6. For me its nice seeing the reserve and the various youth sides finishing at the top end of the table but if they don't then provided they are still feeding players through capable of adding to the first team squad then I would say they are fulfilling their purpose.

I won't be alone in taking quite a bit of pride in the number who do make it through the ranks, even those who don't quite make it at Fir Park. You look around and see the likes of Connolly and Gormley at Ayr, Donnelly and Nixon at Airdrie and Kinniburgh at Thistle to name but a handful carving out careers in the game on the back of their grounding in the 'Well youth set up.

  7. For me its a relatively pressure free last game before the SPL starts.

The first leg result has all but rendered the game academic in terms of progression though that's not to say the excitement levels won't rise through the roof if we happen to get an early goal.

I would expect that we're going to see us up our game, have a bit more possession and hopefuly a few more chances on goal. Steaua with their advantage have no real reason to go chasing the game so I would expect them to allow us more of the ball and if and when that breaks down produce some of the swift attacking that caused us so many problems on Thursday.

First up I hope we do ourselves justice. If we have enough about us on the night to get a draw or even sneak a narrow win that would be fantastic and even if its not enough to do anything in the tie, it would be nice way to round off the Euro campaign.

  8. Can somebody tell me if im wrong but I always thought Mitchell Van Der Gaag was our most expensive signing at £600,000

We could use a centre back like that now

Think Mitch came and went for both £400,000.

  9. Possibly, an idea just to scrap giving out 2nd and 3rd place points for this one. Considering Craggs is sitting second with less than half a dozen votes, most of which I assume are from our Steaua fans. Perhaps a set minimum of votes needs to be made to earn overall points, as receiving 5 votes is hardly worth 2 points for a 2nd place finish. This for ones that are keeping track with the motm awards throughout the season.

Don't think we will see another landslide like this one for the rest of the season.

Yeah I know where you're coming from DC'd. Its not gone unnoticed that I'd have some of kind of decision to make on this one as its clearly been a case of the Steaua fans having a laugh with the Craigan votes.

Alternatively could just ignore any votes cast for him and award the 2nd and 3rd on the basis of other votes cast but arguably that's skewed too with O'Brien sitting with a vote :(

I'll see how it looks by tomorrow night and take it from there.

  10. I have been disappointed by the reaction of the press to last nights results. The Aberdeen result is embarrasing and to some degree Falkirk's result was also poor but to lump Motherwell and Celtic in with what some papers are calling a dismal week for Scottish Football is harsh.

Celtic lost to a team who are well into their season in a league that is fairly strong. From Well's point of view 3-0 away from home against a decent European side is not a disgrace as some in the press have labelled it.

The truth is that the Scottish game is a country mile behind most other European nations but it is not this weeks results that show us that. For years now European teams have been fitter, more organised and more technically gifted and it is going to take some radical change in the Scottish game (and the Scottish culture) to get close to this (and the problem is not simply money). I think it is a shame that Motherwell get held up for example when in actual fact they have done as well as could be expected of them.

I am pleased with the way JG is talking about trying to progress the game in Scotland but he needs like minded people within the game to help and unfortunately it seems that footballing philosophy in Scotland is stuck in the past. What our teams don't need is our press ridiculing individual teams for what is a national problem.

I thought along similar lines this morning when I heard Hugh Keevins grasp the opportunity for some easy soundbytes when discussing last night and Wednesday nights results.

Ofcourse that's no different from normal for him but it did feel a bit harsh that we were lumped into it just to allow him to wallow in an extra bit of sensationalism.

But he wasn't alone. The presenter of Sports Report yesterday (the name escapes me), Radio Scotland's sports programme at 1245 every day was trying to create an angle saying we were under pressure going into last night's game.

Fortunately there are those who are able to show some understanding and are able to look beyond the headline. It took the reporter who travelled with the team (again who's name escapes me) to point out that we had got into the tournament through the back door and had got 3 rounds out of the competition, we were playing with a squad full of guys who played in the youth and reserve teams and that nobody expected us to win. Where was the pressure coming from?

We would have been more deserving of criticism if it had been the team of last year with the high-earners who had bombed 3-0 but as I said earlier in the thread, this is a young team very much at the start of their cycle and the mocking that we've had from some is a bit unmerited.

  11. Bit of a going over for us tonight.

Again with the unknown quantity of our opponents and the fact we've not yet been able to measure ourselves against SPL quality opposition its hard to gauge at what level we are at, but Steaua looked easily a much better team than us and you can't argue with the scoreline.

I don't know whether their fans have been deliberately playing themselves down - I've read all about several suspensions and injuries, but if there's more to come from that team next week, then you do worry if it will be more of the same at Airdrie.

Despite us being under the cosh it was frustrating that the crucial opening goal was a bit self-inflicted and the timing of the second was an absolute killer.

Even then had we put away that chance it would left a little room for hope for next week if we could have kept it to 3-1 but it wasn't to be.

I still take a lot of encouragement in the grander scheme of things. Our young team is very much at the beginning of its cycle rather than at the end and the experience will stand them in good stead.

Despite the result tonight. Have loved the European adventure thus far and looking forward to seeing how we perform next week.

(and lets not let the banter degenerate into anything nasty folks eh)

  12. Really saddened to hear the news, and even more disturbing if the rumoured way of passing proves to be correct.

My memories of Mowgli are of a genuine talent who got slightly lost along the way and never quite fully showed his full potential albeit carving out a long and very successful senior (and junior) career.

But he was always a player I really really liked.

I was lucky enough that my old man took me to a pile of reserve and youth games and he was outstanding at that level as a youngster at the time. He was head and shoulders above most in that youth cup team and as we reminisced in the reserve game thread recently, he scored 4 against Rangers in one game which brought him into the thinking of McLean for his 1991 Cup Final Squad.

His early introduction into the first team brought some success, particularly that purple patch at the start of the 1993'94 season where he put away something like half a dozen goals before September was out.

But he seemed to lose his form slightly at the worst possible time with the Cobra soon to arrive on the scene and he never quite seemed to be rated by Alex McLeish unfortunately.

Like others have said on the two occasions I had the pleasure to bump into him while we was a Motherwell player, he was happy enough to speak away to me and spoke positively about the club.

Really sorry to hear the news and my thoughts are with his family today.

  13. Is it not irrelevant since the tickets are already on sale for the game at Airdrie?

Whilst the club won't be making as much dosh from the games at Airdrie given the lower crowds that might be expected at Fir Park and having to hire the stadium I'll bet in terms of organisation they won't be too unhappy its not been at Fir Park.

At Airdrie its a relatively straight forward case of selling tickets. At Fir Park you would have the added complication of season ticket holders looking to get first pick at their own seats, which given the timescales could surely only be guaranteed for a couple of days and inevitable outcry that would follow if you weren't able to buy within that tight timescale.

  14. Sure you'll be able to withdraw using most cards but I think Nationwide are the only ones who don't charge you for withdrawing money abroad.

The good lady and I have an account set up just for that. Transfer the dosh in before we go, and just withdraw it when we need it.

  15. I think part of the excitement of European games for me is the fact we don't know as much about our opponents. We all know exactly what we're going to get when we play St Mirren or Kilmarnock but this is all new and refreshing.

It brings its a different kind of edge and nervousness to the lead up to the games as we attempt to work out how good they are, how good we are and try to work out how its going to go, all without really being quite sure.

And this one is no different.

I am excited at the prospect of lining up against a former European Cup winner but have little or no clue as to how we compare to them, particularly with us having 2 guys who have only played once for us and potentially 3 in the squad we haven't seen yet.

As I think Jay said way back in the thread without knowing much about Steaua at first glance just got to hope we can keep the tie alive when we bring them back to Scotland. Anything more than that would be fantastic.

  16. Was on to Sky this morning as it happens, sorting out my sports channels which had mysteriously become scrambled and the ESPN/Sky thing came up in conversation.

ESPN will start broadcasting a week or so before our season starts and apparently all the games will be shown in HD for those who have it.

Its an extra £9 on top of the existing Sky prices for the ESPN part of the package and will just get added on to your existing Sky bill rather than a separate direct debit as it was with Setanta.

Lassie also added that where with Setanta your subscription only went to one box if you have a multi-room set up, because this is being administered by Sky it'll go to each box you have.

  17. Whats Rab Shannon uptae these days?

:D Does Rab not have something like a six game European ban hanging over his heid still after putting one of the Dortmund players half way into the East Stand?

  18. There's always a few scouts and opposition managers at every game. No point in reading too much into it.

Its same at pretty much every level as well not just the first team. We've had the thread about the reserve and youth games recently - any time I went to any of those game you could almost guarantee there would be somebody from other sides. Back in the day they were easy spot in the comfy leather seats in the centre stand!

Last U19 game I was at was at Bellshill a couple of years back and you had Campbell Money manager of some junior team and Stevie Woods, Celtic goalkeeping coach, for example.

  19. We've just had a result that will see smiles etched on our faces until at least next Thursday. We're enjoying seeing the new manager begin to turn the club around using his methods and bringing in new players to kick-start his revolution.

    Loads and loads of positives.

So I don't really see what's to be gained looking back in bitterness to be honest about McGhee.

Tasty though it will be when we face his teams and there will added spice seeing how Gannon's team fares against Aberdeen over the course of the season but we've plenty to be going on with ourselves without wasting time on McGhee.
