  2. On the topic of Scottish cup wins it was 33 years ago today we were heading into Hampden more in hope than expectation to play Dundee untd. To see us lift the cup that day was right up there as 1 of my proudest moments as a well fan, what a weekend that was.

  3. I’m not sure we need another 32 year old midfielder. He’s also got another year left on his contract at Partick.

  4. My reading of the situation is that the old board wanted the financial support provided by the Well Society without necessarily having any outside interference in their running of the club. The Society was set up in a way that it had minority representation on the board and that representation was pretty close to existing board members, making it very difficult for other members of the Society to effect change. Since the new WS board elections in October, the dynamic has changed somewhat and it feels like there is a drive to have more input into the decision making process. Given that 2 of the old board are moving on and we now have a new CEO in place who was approved by the Society and an additional Society member on the board, it feels to me like the Society is in a better position to have influence in the direction the club will now take. What happens next is crucial. Hopefully a joint enterprise between an investor and a rejuvinated Well Society where the future if the club is secured without any long term risk to any of our assets.

  5. Season 23/24 nearly over and it has been a bit of a meh season. Nothing to get excited about, out of the cups early, never looking like getting top six and safe from relegation with three games to go.. The usual suspects on here decrying the manager and their favoured fall guys. Kettlewell is stuck on 5-3-2 and only changes this when we are chasing the game and he puts on a load of forwards. The lack of wide players in the squad means we are relying on wing backs to get forward. This puts a lot on them and often they get subbed off and replaced like for like. He has had to deal with an excessive amount of injuries to important players. McGinn 6 games, Casey 9 games, Slattery missed last five months of the season, Miller 12 games, Obika all season, Paton 8 games Blaney 5 games, Butcher 14 games. Bieruth 6 games. Add to that the recall of Bieruth and Spencer. Recruitment has on the whole been good. Negatives Wilkinson, Obika, Shaw, and Halliday. Positives Bieruth, Bair, Spencer, Paton, Gent, Vale. Ok Nicholson and Devine. Kettlewell has improved players. Bair, Spittal, Miller and Gent especially with loanees being recalled after their clubs recognised their improvement after successful spells. He appears to be a good motivator as despite the long run without a win the players stuck with him. How many times did we score late goals to get a draw or a win? God knows how he keeps them interested as his team talks must last ages if his interviews are anything to go by. Despite losing Van Veen we are the third top scorers in the league. Problems are clearly in defence and he hasn't managed to sort that out. Big summer ahead. Recruitment needs to be good again and he needs to find a couple of diamonds to improve us. I saw my first game over sixty years ago and I will be back next year to support the team and the manager.

  6. My first game was in 1966 when my cousin kidnapped me and took me to Fir Park for a game against St Johnstone. Was hooked from that day onwards. Seen lots of fantastic players....and some not so fantastic... in my time but it's strange how it's often players that few mention that stick in the memory. Brian Heron as an example. Some shot on him and I recall a game against Killie where I swear the goal posts were actually rocking after his shot smashed against the bar. At least it seemed that way to an awe struck teenager. I do regret that I never saw some of the older players such as Stevenson, Ferrier, McFadyen and a good few others that moved on to greater success elsewhere. Players like Hughie Ferguson whose life story is so tragic despite his footballing achievements. Everyone part of Motherwell folklore and legends, if not the GOAT.

  8. Have some faith Dave, personally I think we will pump them St J are brutal, Levein has made them worse since he took over. They're heading for the playoff, but I would expect them to get past Raith rover ok.

  9. Think you need some older heads and players that have been at a club a while in any squad. Even if he’s not a regular starter he has loads of experience. Have we had any players like that in the last few years, how long has he been here for now . SOD will be a good guy to have around

  11. This is a very good summary of the season. I think there has actually been a consistency to the season that is overshadowed a little by the winless run in the winter. Without dazzling or ever really being comprehensibly thumped it has generally been a mediocre season. This seems strange to say when we have been really competitive against the OF and we got th long awaited league victory against Rangers Looking at Kettlewell's record as a whole over one and a half seasons, I think there is reason to believe we have the makings of a decent manager who will improve with time. He reminds me a little of Derek McInnes, never sensational, never completely at sea just steady making incremental improvements. If that incremental improvement continues Wellfan could get his wish of a top 6 finish and I think it is reasonable for him ( and all of us) to set that as the next target . Overall I think the club has reached an equilibrium just now that will serve as a good basis to push on to greater things. I am excited for next season but then I am a self aware happy clapper. Looking forward to my hands being red raw next season.
