I don’t think for a minute we will be seriously considering Billy Davies despite what the media says

Can just imagine the reaction by some , a bit like when Mark McGhee came back

Given he has been out of the game for over a decade, it is a complete non-starter.

Ryan Lowe is next Motherwell manager contender but Billy Davies has board support over emotional Fir Park return

The 46-year-old was previously linked with the Rangers job and has been out of work since leaving Preston

Ryan Lowe is under consideration for the vacant Motherwell job.

The former Preston North End manager has been put forward to the Fir Park board. The 46-year-old - previously linked with the Rangers job - has been out of football since he left Deepdale at the start of the season and has emerged as a stronger contender to replace Stuart Kettlewell, who resigned earlier this week.

Motherwell chief executive officer Brian Caldwell is currently taking applications and shortlisting potential candidates. Caldwell has admitted that they haven’t been short of applicants from all over the globe. Caldwell confirmed: “We had over 50 applicants in 24 hours. “We have had interest from all over the world. “It is now a case of going through the information received and to try to sift through them and take it to the next step.”

Assistant Steve Frail and coach Jon Obika will take the team for the weekend clash with Celtic but Caldwell admitted that is very much a short-term measure. He added: “Ideally, you get them in sooner rather than later. “It is also really important we get the right person. “If that takes longer than our ideal time scale then it is more important to get the right person.”

Motherwell’s board have indicated that experience will be important in this next appointment. Former Motherwell boss Billy Davies also has support on the board over a possible return.

The likes of former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, Tam Courts, who led Dundee United into Europe, and ex-Hearts head coach Stevie Naismith all feature highly in the bookmaker’s odds. Falkirk boss John McGlynn is another that has been mentioned although Motherwell would need to pay compensation on that front.

Celtic's finest singing abusive chants about the Royal Family tonight (whether or not you support the Royal Family is irrelevant). Will that be reported by the Scottish media and several articles written about that?

I'm sure their pro-IRA chants will have gone down well In Birmingham too.

Shameful exit could put Motherwell's 40 year top flight stay at risk

NORMALLY when a manager departs a football club there is an outpouring of both relief and elation among their supporters in the immediate aftermath.

The reaction to Stuart Kettlewell’s sudden exit from Motherwell on Monday, though, provoked an entirely different reaction from the Fir Park club’s fanbase.

The fact that Kettlewell chose to leave of his own volition because of the toll the vile abuse which he had started to be subjected to on a weekly basis was taking on his family led to a tsunami of sympathy from Steelmen and Steelwomen everywhere.

Yet, there was also widespread unhappiness, anger even, that a coach who had taken a team with one of the smallest budgets in the William Hill Premiership into the top half of the table had been forced out in such sorry circumstances after a run of just three defeats.

Phillip Speedie, the chair of the Well Society, summed up the feelings of many bewildered supporters in the statement which the North Lanarkshire outfit’s majority shareholders published on their website.

“A terribly sad situation,” he said. “I hope that we as fans can reflect on this and do things differently. A manager with an impressive win record who has developed players and brought in significant transfer revenue. Thank you for everything, Stuart.”

Stephen Reside, a season ticket holder, echoed those sentiments and expressed his disgust at the unfortunate turn of events when he spoke to Sky Sports yesterday.

“To have a manager leave because of personal abuse affecting him and his family is quite a damning indictment on this football club,” he said. “This is a handful of supporters, this isn’t Motherwell fans as a whole that have caused this to happen. It is sad.”

Those are clearly, however, not views which are shared by absolutely everyone who follows the fifth-placed side in Scotland’s top flight.

Discontent with Kettlewell has, despite the wins over St Mirren, Dundee United and Aberdeen and draws with Rangers and Kilmarnock, been steadily rising among a vocal section of the Motherwell support in recent weeks.

There was growing disaffection about the standard of play which Stephen O’Donnell and his team mates were producing on the park in certain quarters and a feeling that a change in the dugout was required to bring about an improvement.

When Kettlewell made an ill-advised comment about not listening to those who had “never done the job and never dedicated their life to this game” it stoked their ire even further.

However, the boo boys, as the reaction to the former Ross County manager’s surprise decision on social media websites and radio phone-ins underlined, were still very much a noisy minority.

There can be no condoning the level of vitriol which has been aimed in the direction of a man who has done so much for Motherwell during the two years which he was in situ.

Punters pay their money and are quite entitled to express their views. But the treatment which Kettlewell received during a difficult and disappointing spell went beyond, way, way beyond, what was acceptable. He deserved to be treated with far greater respect.

Are the agitators for change, though, right to expect better on the pitch? Should Motherwell be producing more entertaining fare with the players they have in the squad? Will a new manager come in and spark an instant upturn in form and fortunes despite the lengthy injury list?

A number of strong contenders, the likes of Scott Brown, Scot Gemmill, Neil Lennon, David Martindale, John McGlynn and Steven Naismith, have been linked with the vacancy. If any member of that sextet was to take over you would imagine there would be, initially at least, a positive response to his arrival.

At the same time, there is a very real danger the Fir Park club’s season could get worse and Kettlewell could ultimately be shown to be a miracle worker who overachieved with the limited resources that he had at his disposal.

Indeed, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they could be dragged into the relegation zone in the weeks and months ahead.

They are just six points ahead of second bottom Kilmarnock at the moment and host Celtic this Sunday. If they lose to the league leaders and defending champions this weekend then they could slip into the bottom half.

It is 40 years since Motherwell last played in the second tier. That is an Evertonesque run. But they are not a club with a divine right to remain among the country’s elite. Far larger and wealthier rivals have all suffered the drop in recent campaigns.

Those who targeted Kettlewell in such a shameful fashion may well end up regretting what they wished for come May.

    FFS.

Stuart Kettlewell set to quit as Motherwell boss in face of fan fury following St Johnstone shockers

It seems the weekend defeat at McDiarmid Park has proved to be the last straw for the under fire manager

Record Sport understands he 40-year-old is ready to call time on his time at Fir Park and the shock move comes after back-to-back defeats at St Johnstone in the Premiership and Scottish Cup. The Motherwell boss has taken it in the neck from a small section of supporters and he has decided now is the time to head for the Fir Park exit.

Kettlewell has taken Motherwell to fifth in the league, on one of the smallest budgets in the league and the Steelmen also haven’t been helped by a crippling injury list that has robbed him of a number of key players, like Aston Oxborough and captain Paul McGinn. He has also averaged more than a 40 per cent win rate since he took over from Stevie Hammell back in February 2023. The former Ross County boss dragged them out of the relegation fight and to the top of the bottom six. The following season they finished ninth and this campaign they were in the top six.

Kettlewell has also helped develop some of the club’s top rising talent, like Lennon Miller and Ewan Smith. He has also proved to have an eye in the transfer market, bringing in Theo Bair on a free transfer and then selling him to Auxerre for more than £2 million in the summer.

Kettlewell held talks with Fir Park chiefs who were keen for him to stay but it looking increasingly like Motherwell will need to begin their search for a new manager. Kettlewell had previously a proven track record at with the Staggies, guiding them to promotion and back into the Scottish Premiership.

Dundee's Jordan McGhee has agreed a pre-contract deal to join Motherwell this summer.

The Fir Park side, who have a number of key players out injured, could explore bringing the versatile 28-year-old to the club this month.

The former Hearts and Falkirk player, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has spent more than five years at Dens Park, making more than 180 appearances and winning top-flight promotion twice.

McGhee, who can play in defence and midfield, is currently out with a hamstring issue but is expected to return soon, meaning a potential January arrival could ease Stuart Kettlewell's injury concerns.

The Well manager confirmed on Thursday that captain Paul McGinn and left-back Steve Seddon are among several players facing spells out, which also includes influential midfielder Lennon Miller.

Kettlewell, who has already brought in young midfielder Kai Andrews and goalkeeper Archie Mair on loan this window, says the club are "working endlessly" as they aim to "strengthen the group".

"But I can't really put a timescale on that," he added prior to his side's Scottish Cup trip to St Johnstone on Saturday.

"What I can finish off by saying is the club have been supportive".

Dundee, who face city rivals Dundee United in their fourth-round tie on Monday, have strengthened their squad this month by acquiring defensive duo Aaron Donnelly and Ilmari Samuels, plus midfielder Cesar Garza.

On further potential transfer business, Dens Park boss Tony Docherty says he is "hoping there might be movement on one other".

  7. It looks like the temperature at kick off is set to be around -5C.  Fans are being asked to part with £27 (or £30 on the gate!) to sit outside in these conditions.

Coming on the back of Christmas, and at the start of a run of consecutive away games, no wonder we have hardly sold any tickets.

We are aware that there are no trains running to Perth from Motherwell on Saturday 18 January, the day of our fourth round tie against St Johnstone.

While there are replacement bus services, we want to make it as easy as possible for our supporters to make such a crucial match.

As such, we have got two buses running from Fir Park to McDiarmid Park. The price is £15 per person.

The Cooper Bar will be open from 11.30 for refreshments, with coaches leaving at 13.15.

To book, please visit our ticketing platform.

Alternatively, call us on 01698 333333 or email tickets@motherwellfc.co.uk.

Is it a coincidence that Celtic (and their city friends) have been repeatedly fined for their supporters behaviour in Europe but nothing is done by the SPFL of the SFA.

It's because UEFA adopt a policy of strict liability, holding clubs directly responsible for fan misbehaviour. Obviously the Scottish footballing authorities will never follow suit.
