  1. Very encouraged by Roberts signing. IMHO he was our most impressive forward before his ' freak ' injury .

I felt he was pacey, direct and a real menace to defences . Genuinely felt that if he hadn't got the injury we would have made top 6.

    Grounds for optimism.

  2. With the Norwegian Adonis about to join and thereby being the first from that country to play for us, a question going the rounds in the Cooper today was whether any Swede had played for us.

Certainly we have had reps from Faroe Islands, Iceland , Finland and Denmark ( if Sloth counts!).

    Look forward to answers.

Why is the comparison with Hastie unfair? Both of them came through the academy took their chance when it came and looked like they would become 1st team regulars.

Then after a great few months each they followed the cash to deals with bigger clubs, which  in my view was a mistake,as another season or two to develop at Fir park would have been a better prospect, but that said I won't criticise anyone for looking for a better wage and financial security.

As it turns out both of them  started well but failed to kick on resulting in them being loaned out, so the comparison is very valid.

    Granted there are similarities (not least departing too early) but a few important differences apply;

    * Hastie's ' time in the sun' with us was very brief whereas Scott's good progress was pretty continuous.

    * Scott's greater potential meant he held down a first team place much earlier than Hastie.

    * Scott as far as I recall didn't need to go out on loan.

    Just my thoughts.

  4. Fully understand the criticisms flying around just now and that there's only 10 days until the Hibs game, but I do think we need to cut GA some slack. For starters he is currently denied the services of O'Hara, Shields, Grimshaw and a fully rehab'd Donnelly. Also KVV, Woolery and the Maidstone boy are not up to speed as yet by their own admission.

Meanwhile the " 3 or 4 additional players we need" , and targeted I believe, won't be available currently due to the English teams (being behind Scotland re preparations) still evaluating the offering of contracts. Thus GA is playing a waiting game. Yup , a delicate balancing act but an understandable strategy given our limited funds .

Yes, while I would still have expected better performances by now I would wager that our starting 11 by window's end will bear no resemblance to the current 11.

  5. Never knew the man.

Always felt his posts were fair, balanced and polite----- features of his personality I would wager.

    Big loss.

    Rest in peace Sir.

    Craig Moore signs for Darvel

I don't think Craig ever got fully over the bad injury he got when playing for us against ICT.  As often the case in injuries like this it was the result of an innocuous coming together with a player.

Btw Luke Watt has signed for Linlithgow Rose.

  7. Just a bunch of old guys who share their views at the end of each season. Helps to pass the day. Therefore not to be taken too seriously and certainly shouldn't warrant any abuse from anyone.

We award points out of 10 for each player who started games. Not substitutes e.g Crawford who came on at Tannadice after only 6 minutes.

    1. Campbell 185.

    2. O'Donnell 177.

    3. Gallagher 162.

    4. Watt 138.

    5. Lamie 137.

    6. Cole/ O'Hara 121.

    8. Mugabi 102.

    9.  Long 101.

    10.  Kelly 96.

    11. Polworth 93.

    12. Crawford 86.

    13.  Carson 81.

    14.  Mc Ginley 78.

    15.  Grimshaw 60.

    16.  Maguire 56.

    17.  Carroll 55.

    18.  Magliore 35.

    19.  Roberts 30.

    20.  Hastie 27.

    21.  Seedorf 26

    22.  Lawless 23.

    23.  Chapman 17 .

    24.  Foley 15.

    25 .  Donnelly/ Johnston 4.

    Other players;

    Lang 61.

    Turnbull 27.

    Archer 15.

    White 13.

So, there you go. Not to many surprises with Campbell winning quite comfortably. Then again SOD if he had  signed at the start of the season may have pushed him close. Also Watt and Carson would have been much higher but for injuries .

Many will question meantime how some of the players got awarded any points!!!

  8. Watched Forbes tonight for Dumbarton against Edinburgh City.

3 assists and won man of match.

Clearly it's at a lowish level but Forbes was in his element controlling the game from start to finish.

His lack of pace however remains . This held him back from making progress at the top level.

    Now 32.  How time flies.

Btw Carswell and Neil also played for Dumbarton. Brown played for Edinburgh City.

Well, as the sun sets on a season to forget for multiple reasons ( actually it's morning here and absolutely p*ss*ng down which also seems somehow apt) where do we find ourselves?

The players who are already signed on for next season are an uninspiring bunch who have either underperformed over the last twelve months or are just not good enough. It is the manager's task to get a whole lot more out of them both collectively and as individuals. A fair few question marks over a few - can Carson return from injury and be as good as he was? can Grimshaw return after illness and provide the industry and utility that would enhance the squad? can Stephen Lawless find the form and inclination to remind us that his signing was a cause of some optimism? can Harry Robinson return from Aldi with everything on the list and the correct change?

The players we have brought in on loan have been a mixed bag, but I honestly cannot make a case for keeping any of them. Kelly would be a great signing, but we couldn't afford him and the only other one to make an impact , Roberts, is now out with a long term injury.

The players whose contracts are coming to an end are another mixed bag. Cole has done enough to warrant a new deal, though whether or not t will be with us is the real question. Long is a frustration in that there is obviously talent there, but it only appears when you have just about given up on him. Probably a luxury that a club at our level cannot really afford. I have some sympathy for the likes of Semele and Cornelius who have lack opportunities to show if they can make a mark, but if they haven't already broken through in our current squad, will they ever? Scott Fox has been unlucky with injury but you would think that Morrison is now ready to be our back up keeper. Charles Dunne has to prove that he has recovered enough to be a viable option in our squad. Foley is decent, but not a long term option. I can se most of them going.

My hope is that the manager is able to take what we already have and get the best out of it. A good team is greater than the sum of it's parts, and the one thing that we can probably all agree on is that, this season, this has not been the case at Fir Park.

I think we will have to bring in some new blood. As o who and what position, a lot will depend on who remains after the new deals are offered, rejected and so on. The three things I think we need to highlight with regard to strengthening the squad are leadership, quality and character. All three have been sadly lacking this season and, without them, we are in for another year of struggle at the wrong end of the table.

Anyway, we made it through this year. Sincere best wishes to all true Motherwell fans. Here's to better times ahead, and not just on the football field. I believe we are lucky to support an amazing football club, forged in the steel of a white hot furnace, and trying to achieve against the odds. When I think about it, I thank my late father for instilling this passion and support in me and realise that, although it may be a struggle on the bad days, it is part of me forever now and I love it.

PS A wee cup win next season would be nice.

Yup, lovely words and best regards to you and your country .

None of them , there is a reason they are relegated.

Jamie Hamilton has been getting a lot of plaudits this season.

Not sure if he would cost anything but perhaps worth a look.

  11. Now that it is clear Aberdeen announced Dec's signing rather than ( as some of our fans would have us believe) being the result of underhand behaviour by the player, I would hope that we could cut him some slack.

Suspect this is a forlorn hope as Dec seems to have been prejudged throughout this season--- regardless of the absence of facts .

It's sad that the big man , who admittedly could have handled some matters better i.e. social media, will have his time at Motherwell blemished without facts to back this up.

This will be seen when he rocks up at FP with Aberdeen.

    Pity.

Don’t see why they couldn’t have sat on this news till after next Sunday.  It can only create a negative vibe.

Best not to jump to conclusions as possibly Dec had no input in the decision.

  13. From time to time here in Livingston I bump into Marvin Bartley ( and his Rottweiler ' Diego'!!!)

Asking him this morning about his time at Burnley when GA was there. Marv said that  despite him being 24 and GA  being 39 he ( nor anybody else) could beat him for sheer endurance.

Described GA as the model professional who was looked up to by everyone at Burnley. GA expects high standards from everyone and that slackers wouldn't be tolerated.

Marv also said GA was impeccable at penalties with goalies unable to read him due to having " no curve in his run up".

Marv was stunned btw that Lawless missed penalty against Hibs as his record at Livi was excellent.

I think Campbell could comfortably hold down a place in an English Championship side. He would benefit from playing in what would undoubtedly be a better side than he currently plays in.

Obviously from a purely selfish point of view I’d want him to stay here but realistically for the sake of his career and further development he probably needs to move on now.

As with others I have nothing other than full respect for Campbell.

And yes, with better players around him he will get even better.

Sadly however his major weakness holding him back from going higher in the game is something he can do little about------ lack of pace.

Unless you are a player with outstanding skills in other aspects of the game such as Faddy, Gary Mc Allister, Tommy Coyne ( neither of whom were Usan Bolt) lack of pace is a real hinderence.

Wish Allan all the best regardless.

Jeezo mate,I'm sorry to hear that,it puts football in perspective,we all get annoyed and pissed off with the game but in reality there's always more important things in our life going on.i don't know you pal but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you,all the best to you.

Totally agree. My best wishes go to you.

  16. Tonight was actually worse than the Albion Rovers defeat a few years back.

As I think some of the players check this site I am not going risk their mental health by identifying the  players who played so badly tonight.

Those players will know who they are.

Suffice to say I dont think I have seen in a game as many misplaced passes , gormless decision making and lack of hunger as I witnessed tonight.

Awful performance but bizarrely we are through.

Lets hope Tony Watt is back for the quarter final.

If Carson is fit he'll be number one and either Morrison or someone like Fox will be back up. If Carson is not available maybe we can get an extra 6 months loan out of Kelly.

I Gallacher, Cole and Campbell will be away and we will need to look to replace them with similar quality.  Long will be gone I think and as will some of the fringe players but I don't see them being replaced like for like.

I don't see much coming in beyond that.

Wouldn't be surprised to see us start next season in a 4-4-2 with

    GK: Carson

    RB: O'Donnell

    CB: Mugabe

    CB: New Centre Back

    LB: Carroll/McGinley

    MF: Donnelly

    MF: Crawford

    MF:Lawless

    MF: New midfielder.

    FW: Watt

    FW: New Striker

The key will be those three new players and how good they are and how well they settle along with injuries.

I think that also allows us to go with 3 at the back, or even 3 up front if we bring in another striker on top of the above. Would have Morrison, Grimshaw, Maguire, Lamie as senior players from the bench and filled out with the younger players that are at that stage. Who that ends up being is a different question.

Maybe 5 new faces, 3 permanent and a couple of quality loans.

Or I could be miles off and its a full new team.

    Are you forgetting O' Hara?

Stephen O'Donnell is a solid SPL level full back. Not a world beater, and against higher quality opposition he can get found out at times. However, anyone who thinks there is a queue of superior players lined up waiting to sign on at Fir Park needs a reality check. This is very good business for the club, not just from a playing perspective, but in raising or at least maintaining our profile as a club who can help players progress their careers. It may help attract some decent palyers in the summer.

    Post of the week.
