  1. I think we made it hard for ourselves today. We didn't try and play it along the ground. Too many balls were lobbed forward or were skied clearances. We won a few of the balls that went forward but I thought if we had gone down the outside more, like we did when Frear came on, it would have been more profitable. It looked like the attitude was get the ball forward, get the points and get out of town. And, to be fair, it worked.

You cannot play the ball on the ground on that apology for a pitch so it was horses for courses and glad to see we can adjust to different curcumstances but jeeez it wasn't pretty

  2. Fab win on a crap surface. Sooner they get relegated the better. Agree with the Hammell comments. I'm not convinced about Dunne yet either.

I noticed after the game Robbo walking with him as if trying to gee him up, think the big fella is lacking confidence. Noticed also that immediately after another first half mistake Hammy was sent for a warm up plus also got a more intensive 1 to 1 warm up at ht, we were convinced he was coming on.

This is my only worry at moment, not sure if Hammy has the legs for Hampden but thought he was terrific v Adeen and as a second half sub v Hearts?. He has played in a 3 at back before.

    Tough call

  3. You can only take 3 points from a league match and we did that. We were the better team but in truth it was a scrappy, ugly, low quality match of football, perhaps that's why they were so slow to get the flood lights on.

We started brightly and had numerous chances but when Accies scored against the run of play it badly effected us and it wasn't looking too good for us. Our goal was similar to Accies, poor defending followed by an excellent finish.

We created more chances but the truth was we didn't look especially convincing defensively, especially on the left with Dunne having fresh air swipes, falling over, giving away fouls, giving the ball away and so forth. It's glaringly obvious he's the weak link in the team right now and opposition managers will surely be fashioning game plans with that in mind.

At the other end of the scale Hartley is probably the biggest threat we've had from a centre back since the Mitchell van der Gaag days when he bagged, off the top of my head, 7, in a season. Would be a huge coup if we could keep him at Fir Park longer and the difference between him and Heneghan is night and day.

Most of the rest of the half we were dominant without really being that inspiring and a period of Accies pressure in the last ten minutes or so was actually welcome as it brought some edge back to the game. Bowman was excellent today, but he should have made it 3-1 late in the game at a time when the game was not yet safe, luckily it didn't matter in the end.

Overall we did well to win the match, especially coming back from 1-0 down but it was a poor match played in near silence much of the time. There were mitigating circumstances - the worst surface in the league and perhaps a few, both on the pitch and in the stands, with eyes on next week, however we will need to make a big improvement in performance next week if we want to get to a final.

Stand outs were Carson, Hartley, Campbell and Bowman.

Would agree with most of that although didn't think young Campbell had a particularily good game by his high standards. Was my first look at Carson close quarters and imo he is the real deal, just exudes confidence and decisiveness.

No doubt in my mind last years team would have lost that game.

On another point the sooner that horrible mob and their horrible pitch and their awful style of football are out the SPL the better

  4. Also watching and thinking exactly the same. Saints have been poor at taking advantage of their numerous set pieces.

Another take away from this game so far is that we have absolutely NOTHING to fear from this mob next week.

Was thinking exactly the same thing...Saints were really poor (they will not have a good season)and Rangers nothing special. Left back John good going forward but poor defensively. Nothing to fear if we impose ourselves

  5. I'll put a caveat at the start that I know him personally and I have defended him on here in the past when I felt too many were unfoundedly sharpening their knives or stepping over a line in the sand. However I have also been critical where it was merited but when I have done so I've tried to offer an viable alternative.

I think it would only be the most downhearted Well fan who would not be pretty happy and optimistic of where we are at present and the potential of where we can go.

Yes under his tenure he's made a few mistakes, however none in the media as he's very adept at that and crucially gets on with most of the press corps. Maybe he should have stood up to McGhee a bit more or advised Les to wind in the spending but when you are new in post, people citing your age as a hinderance and ultimately dealing with very strong and opinionated people I can understand why he may have been steamrollered. In the same, for all we know he may have stood up to people putting his job on a shaky peg.

We have a manager who sees a happy dressing room as key. We're seeing it pay dividends as players like Bowman have been a revelation and 3/4? others have penned extended deals. News today of Campbell is what prompted this thread, a 4 year deal in this age is astute and a nod directed to both player and management for reciprocating faith in each other.

Our U20's are performing really well under Craggs, Las seems to be fitting together with Robinson like a glove and we have a first team where we've still really to see 3 players involved that on paper could turn games. A good summer with 80%ish (for now) success rate on signings.

Financially we're healthy (ish?), 4 guaranteed OF games, Hibs back in the top flight, Cup Semi with the TV and ticket kickback, Marvin's money and Henegen's improved season ticket sales and more astute commercial department that for me has injected a degree of professionalism into what was a bit haphazard. A pitch that winds awards and a new roof on the Hunter for free. Scottish Cup still to come in January.

Be aware most of the appointments now in place were made with Flow at the helm, under his stewardship and his influence. Maybe some of the naysayers would like to comment why they still hold a negative opinion or perhaps offer an apology ......

    Credit where credit's due.

But the PA system is shite and the scoreboard doesn't work, so P45 in the morning Burrows you wage thief.

Agree with all of that, what a thick skin he has needed and I am so pleased for him more than anyone for the turnaround in our fortunes. It would be nice if some of those so quick to criticise and demean him would be as quick to acknowledge they were wrong but I'll no hold my breath.

Yes mistakes have been made but for me he showed he was the real deal by standing up to Rangers over play off tickets. He showed a bit of balls in our dealings with the old firm/establishment and I have no doubt that inspired OUR fans on the day.

There will be bumps in the road ahead but I am glad we have someone like Flow at the helm, and I suppose I should sign off by saying a) I am not Flow and b) I do not know him well

  6. As much as I'm a huge fan of his, I'm not sure he's even been our best player of the month, never mind the whole of the league??

Tend to agree, just feeding off the usual lazy journalism by 'pundits' and the like who have no in depth knowledge of teams outside the old firm and Adeen. Still at least good to see our club 'recognised'

  7. A cracker as well, Edge of the box, blasted into the bottom corner! Think naismith got the winner a few minutes before the end. Was gutted!

Jelavic turned Hutchy for equaliser. If I remember correctly we went into that on a poor run of form with little expectation but actually played well on the day and yes Lasley goal was a cracker....think it might have been January 2009? or therabouts

Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk

Edit what a load of bolloks....it was January 2011, Naismith did indeed score the winner (in 83 mins) after Las equalised in 66 mins, edu had opened scoring in 20 mins.

We beat Dun Utd 1-0 with a Gow goal in 86 mins in the quarter final. Think Broon was mumpin his gums about getting a bonus for us reaching the semi final even though he no longer our manager but AS EVER might be wrong!

  8.

We've both said we should be clear of relegation issues and I'm looking forward to that being the case, I just think we'll fall a bit short of top six. Difficult to say who will be there but I expect Hearts to improve, Hibs have the resources to improve their squad in January and i don't think we'll reach St. Johnstone's level of consistency.

As for a cup run, by our standards that means getting to a semi so we can already tick that box!

Reasonable assessment, more I think about it St Johnstone should be in our sights and as for cup runs lets have 2!. Anyways nice to have a debate about how high up the table we will finish, not how lowly we will be

  9. As poor as Thistle were, in the past we would have dropped to (or already been at) their level and had a complete non-event of a game that could have gone either way.

Credit to the team for a professional job while not firing on all cylinders.

At this early stage of the season I'm (unusually) confident we won't be involved in a relegation battle and think we'll be pushing for a top six place although likely to ultimately fall short of that target.

Who do you think will beat us to a top 6 place? If we assume Celtic Aberdeen and Rangers are the top 3 (and in the case of Rangers thats a big if), then I believe we will fight it out with Hibs StJohnstone and Hearts for the other 3 places. We are currently 1 point behind, level, and 4pts ahead of these 3 teams. I dont think anyone else will contend and I believe it will be tough but that if we can maintain our current performance level we can do it. I predict Hibs 4th us 5th and StJ/Hearts for 6/7th.

Whether we do or not we have more than enough to stay clear of trouble and have another cup run.

  10. Mind a few months ago when everyone was raging because we lost to Barrow?

I do indeed and was mildly amused at it all. Pre season is when you find out what works and what doesn't, who can do what and who can't, etc etc. Lessons learned against Gateshead and Barrow have contributed to our great start.

  11. If there is no intention on Louis part to sign the extension, which he is entitled to do. Then the club should make whatever cash possible in the window with hopefully a nice sell on clause. I think the replacement may already be here in the shape of sid the Lithuanian. Use the money being offered to Louis to get the gaffer on a better contract.

Agreed but don't forget Newell as well, I think both have been brought in as medium/long term possible replacements

  12. Bit of perspective needed...yes flat all round and anyone who has played sport will tell you how difficult it is to replicate a peak like Thursday. Disappointed but not too down. Adeen were bound to be up for it and they are second best team in Scotland. We will need to learn and will. We played too many long balls and our best moments were the odd occasion we did get it down. Hartley outstanding, but Kipre showed his inexperience and McHugh was poor in possession yet again. The fact Adeen were so pleased to win shows how far we have come. Onwards and upwards

  14. I am struggling to keep a lid on it as well, however for the first time ever as a Well fan watching us 2 goals up I was never nervous we were going to blow it. All the things we have had issues with over the years seem to have been sorted. Our game management in the second half was quite superb and not something we are used to seeing.

    1. We are fit and athletic....no team will out fight us or physically intimidate us

    2. We actually take throw ins quickly (and its Andy Rose who shows most and gives the thrower an option)

    3. We are organised and have a plan. Free kicks and corners are dangerous as well

    4. We also have a plan b when needed (and I have no doubt a plan c and d as well!)

    5. We have a team playing for each other ( Moult applauding Bowman off the park, Bowman speaking to Fisher as he replaced him, celebrations on the subs bench at 3rd goal)

    6. We have a growing connection between fans and team which will be vital when we inevitably have an off day

    7. We have a board in sync with the manager and who do business the right way in the transfer market

    8. We have talent in the u20s gaining game time on loan and seeing through Campbell and Cadden there is opportunity to progress

    9. We have fierce competition for places (or even a place on the bench)

    10. We have various options on the bench that can strengthen the team not weaken it.

All of this makes us also an attractive proposition for the right type of player to join us and keep the momentum going which will be vital as inevitably I think we will lose the likes of Kipre, Moult, and Cadden at the end of the season

For all of this a huge thanks to Robbo, Flow, Las, and everyone working behind the scenes. Last night was right up there, the old place was rocking in a way I haven't seen since the play off game, but the difference this time was it was not about survival but about success.

My mojo had gone the last few seasons, but it's well and truly back now and even if there is a setback on Sunday nothing will change that.

I'm away for a wee lie down now!!

  15. A good win today and that'll give us all a boost. It was very much a game of two halves. It was nip and tuck in the first 45 and both sides could have scored although we had the bulk of the chances. Robbo perhaps put the wrong team out. The midfield was strong and combative but lacking in creativity and that showed. In short it was the wrong combination. Dunne clearly wasn't well and shouldn't have started, but robbo held his hands up to that. Still it shows that Dunne has commitment. The team seemed lop sided with Frear being badly missed. Moult too was playing out of position; on the wing or behind his midfielders. I felt a bit sorry for Cadden as he was our only real outball and boy did Killie know it. Our play was characterised by numerous stray passes.

To his credit, Robbo recognised our weaknesses and made cruciaI game changing substitutions with the appearance of Hammell, and Bigi. That gave us more creativity and ultimately our 2 goals. We played some decent football spurred on by an excellent Campbell who fought terrier like for 90 minutes. Bowman played well and took his goal well; Hartley looked the part and was plainly organising the defence. He may yet prove to be a crucial signing. Carson was impressive in goals; and Kipper had another great game. I thought he was unlucky to be yellow carded for wehat looked like a good tackle to me. We ran out good winners but did worryingly sat back a bit in the latter staqes.

A good performance but there are lessons to be learned. We were a bit exposed down the wings at times and we need to get the balance between caution and creativity right in the middle of the park. Still we look a far better team than we were last season and thinmgs are definitely looking up. There is more fight and determination in the team now and its showing. Stephen Robinson is proving to be a good manager.

Good summary as ever. I know what you are saying re midfield but given its a squad game nowadays and we have options on a strong bench I wonder whether the game plan was to win the midfield 'battle' and then push on with more creative players ie Biggi, who I am not convinced is ready for an engine room scrap. Anyways great to be debating the hows of positive results!!

  16. Another game leaving the ground enthused and smiling (as most were).

First half poor Robinson was trying to get word to Dunne to play it shorter, Hammel on was a game changer ... shorter crisper passing.

Campbell and Bowman outstanding as was Hartley, one of the best Well debuts I've seen. When you have the spine of the team strong you can get away with a lot.

Subs spot on yet again. Biggi for Rose was right at that time and Hartley had signalled to the bench with tight hamstrings, good maturity last thing we all needed was him injured.

McHugh did well going back but for all the comments about players going past him and being on the slow side we did lose a bit in midfield when he went back.

So lots to be pleased about and there is obviously more to come. Spirit, fitness, organisation, options, yet still around me in the pod some moanin chunts. Wtf do you people want especially 'shakemaheidy'

Looking forward to Adeen league cup tie.. could be a very special fir park night
