  1. The club is in a no win situation, no one knows for sure if Hastie will carry on improving, its very, very early days and he’s had a few decent games since returning from his loan move.  No club our size is going to retain every player, we’ve done pretty well overal. I think it’s frankly unfair to have a go at the club on this one and we might do well to remember that he could still sign. All this is, is paper talk, let’s wait and see before we make judgements.
Absolutely....it strikes me that exciting as Jake is, (and I watched him also in the reserves), he has been something new for opposition to contend with. Now he has had exposure our opponents will no doubt be working on ways of nullifying him as Celtic and Killie did to a large extent. The acid test for him is coping with that greater exposure and opposition attention. Then we will know if we truly do have a star in the making.

As others have said the clubs record re young players shows far more rights than wrongs. IF we have got this wrong and Jake does move on for a development fee only, then sobeit, I certainly won't be critical towards those entrusted with these calls. Life (and football) ain't a game of perfect

  2. In 30 years times my AS Nancy thunder sticks,  unopened in bag, will be worth a fortune.

They are now bottom of the French second tier which seems incredible given where they were 10 years ago. Don't know if that will make your thundersticks even more valuable? ????

  3. I think that this should be a real source of pride for the club.  The culture in football now is to sack managers at the first hint of trouble.  In Scotland, the clamber to sack managers was the domain of Old Firm fans who believed that a victory every Saturday was a God given right. Sadly it is an attitude that has filtered into all clubs at all levels of the game including our own.

Fortunately in this case, Alan Burrows and the board were able to look deeper than the poor on field performances at a man who is working his socks off to improve all levels of the club from recruitment, to training, to coaching structures to youth development etc. A young, driven professional manager who, whilst still learning the ropes has acted throughout with the best interests of the club at heart.

Some of the comments on these boards in recent months have made for difficult reading. Personal attacks on Robinson and Burrows, and a complete disregard for the hours of work that they put into the club. It would be nice to think that a few lessons have been learnt now that the fortunes have turned around.

We should be seen as a club who supports our managers, our players and particulary our young players. The board has led the way, the fans need to do the same.

I am delighted for the manager, the players and for Burrows. That the goals in recent weeks have been home grown has made it all the sweeter.

What a great post. One of the reasons I seldom come on here anymore is not because folk have different opinions (which is healthy) but because of the vitriolic and personal nature of some of the attacks on our manager, chief exec, and some players and fellow posters. I see the usual suspects have gone quiet, awaiting no doubt a defeat or poor performance to take to their keyboards again.

Don't get me wrong, there were questions to answer and mistakes made, can't say any of us were happy at what we were watching. I just despaired at the lack of reasoned thought, balance and the vindictivness of some contributions.

Suppose its easy sitting behind a keyboard.

  4. Just back and as a fully paid up member of the happy clappy club, I thought that was a disgraceful performance, dreadful selection against a team low on confidence, poor tactics, crazy substitutions just awful all round.

I said after 15 mins this had a 1 nil defeat all over it against a truly awful team.

Turnbull was cutting a frustrated figure at those around him. This kind of display won't help us keep the one genuinely class player we have.

    Worrying to say the least

  5. Some thoughts;
Carson----Season now finished but hopeful he will come back stronger. At 30 he has years left in him.
Gillespie---Able replacement but has to be wary about coming off his line too far.
    Aldred-----Sound.
Mc Hugh---Yup, he is erratic but his strengths outweigh his weaknesses.
Hartley----I like him but his injury record is becoming a concern
Grimmy-----Like Motherwell he is frustratingly inconsistent. Important player though. Check Aberdeen game.
Campbell----Invaluable player but needs to avoid burn out.
Bigi------I hear he has cleared his flat!!
Turnbull---Hopefully he can be advised on the wisdom of furthering his career at FP for 2 or more years. Reminds me increasingly of a young Lambert.
Tait---His versatility and honest approach make him invaluable.
Main----Needs a break to reboot his `Well career.  There is a player there.
Johnson. Good signing who will only get better.
Ferguson---Will drop down the pecking order once a back up goalie to MG is signed in January.
Maguire----Fear he is drifting out of the reckoning. A loan beckons.
Mbulu---Raw but the potential is there.
    Gorrin----Jury is out.
    Rose----Heading west.
Bowman---Has never fully won over Robinson. Remember he was not a Robinson signing. Can see him leaving in January.
Sammon---Although never as bad a signing as some have suggested I feel we would not be too difficult to negotiate with if Hearts wanted him back in January. And with their striker crisis.....I wonder. Interesting that a number of Jambos I spoke to recently all spoke favourably about Sammon`s attitude and application.
Dunne---Once fully up to speed he will be like a new signing.
Frear---Suspect he will be gone in January
Cadden-----Saw him earlier this week in full leg brace. Dont expect to see him until spring I feel.
Tanner----God , we need him back.  He has youth on his side as he recovers from a real sickener. But the longer his absence lasts.....|
Donnelly/ATS------Both need a good 2nd half of season to prove doubters wrong.
Newall---Just hasnt happened. Will likely go out on loan for remainder of season. Then his taxi will await.
Hastie---His Irn Bru performances and form at Alloa could see him as a good replacement for Frear.
Maclean---Always impressed me but injuries occured at the wrong time. Get impression his move to Morton has set him back. Prospect of move to Falkirk has look of Forbes/Mc Hugh.
Under 20`s ----Scott looks real deal and could get a run perhaps toward season`s end. Brown and Livingston might follow. Not so sure about the others and with Crags going this doesnt help .

Of course , new signings will have a big bearing on some of the above guys.

As for where we will end up. 6th aint out of the question [ yet] but I will plump for 8th and a run to the quarter final of the cup.

An interesting 2nd half of the season awaits.
Don't disagree with most of that. Interesting point re Sammon's attitude. This is entirely consistent with what I saw v Hibs in reserves. Totally committed, supporting and encouraging his team mates. Comparison with Ainsworth who I saw in reserves the week prior to McGhee getting sacked. Never moved out centre circle, gave the ball away every time, body language awful, couldn't give a stuff, subbed after 60 mins.

  6. Captain Oats (On Pie & Bovril) has posted an article from the Alloa Advertiser  which says that following talks between the 2 clubs, Jake Hastie is being recalled at the end of the month.  No surprise then.
Great move, know a few Alloa fans and they rate Hastie highly and are disappointed he isn't staying. A huge improvement on Frear.

  7. Without the strengthening of the squad as a whole we would have been in deep trouble  this season given the amount of injuries to key players. In my view new players take time to bed in at a new club and perhaps expectations were too high too early. We are certainly now beginning to see the benefit with I believe more to come from the likes of Gorin and who knows, maybe even dare I say Donnelly who is still only 22. There will always be dud signings but as the season progresses I would suggest maybe not as many as had been suggested a while ago.
Agree with you about Gorin and Donnelly. Gorin was tracked for a good while and Robbo knows Donnelly well from NI U21 duties. I think they could both still come good. ATS and Sammon the 2 who haven't worked out and if we could get them Frear and Newell off the books and even just 2 higher quality replacements we should be well placed for a decent finish to the season

  8. Indeed but to be fair to DEWELL he did come back on post match to hold his hands up.

It is interesting that the much criticised summer transfer strategy, looks far less questionable now with Aldred, Mbulu and Gillespie and DJ playing so well on Saturday, while the timing of Turnbull's introduction looks spot on.

Hastie will be back in January a much improved player after his loan spell at Alloa, and we have seen why the clamour for Livingstone's introduction was premature at this stage.

Fishing in the pond we do, every signing has an element of risk (look at some of wee Tommy's duds in the late 80s), but it looks like the strategy was not as bad as it may have looked 6 weeks ago.

Does this maybe show why Robinson is employed by a football club to make decisions, while you just criticise his every decision with no real consequences?
    Also, a 3-5-2 doesn't use a left back.

  9. Hope people on here have taped the  Celtic game during the week. Watch Andy Rose in the 73rd minute take the ball on the right wing with no one beside him. He AMBLES 10 yards with the ball before a Celic player takes it off him . He is garbage.

That'll be the same Andy Rose just back from injury and subbed on after 5 minutes, having to play virtually the full game in a midfield that spent majority of its time chasing the ball. I remember the incident you are talking about and it was obvious he was physically spent.

As others have said, not the most talented going forward, but put in excellent defensive shifts, allowing others to play. Seeing as we are picking up on isolated incidents, find a clip of Moults chipped goal v Hearts last season and watch whose initial challenge led to Tait getting the ball to Moult.

Fully appreciated by team mates if not some of the experts in the stands.

  10. I agree but I don’t think anybody mentioned anything about us drawing when we went down to 10.  Also on the comparing apples and oranges part, nobody’s actually compared anything apart from AndyP. The point made by siebsbarmyarmy was that after watching Rangers again he can’t fathom how we lost 7-1 as they are utterly shite. I agree with him.
we lose to Rangers 7-1, cuff Aberdeen 3 nil, they then beat Rangers 1-0, we draw with Celtic, then they cuff the league leaders 5-1 Every game is different, teams don't play at the same level or with the same personnel every week, Dundee are a better side now than they were 3 weeks ago, we were gash against Rangers but bounced back, Rangers have been rank since they gubbed us, comparing results as a future guide is useless

  11. Very tough given the ever lengthening injury list with Hearts very much the favourites. However four points from six from the Aberdeen and Celtic games show we can compete with the better teams so a level of hope.
Agreed and it would be really refreshing to hear some praise from the doom and gloom merchants who predicted gubbings in these games

  12. Some real roasters on here. The usual suspects have driven me away from this site and I rarely look at match threads now.

There would be one player in that Celtic side last night who this week has earned DOUBLE the total amount of our whole starting eleven last night.

I get the feeling that some on here were not celebrating our equaliser as they realised Robinson was safe in his job for another week.

The melt down at Sammon being in from the start was laughable. He can’t play on Saturday against Hearts so it made sense to play him last night and in the second half he did well. Its called forward planning and using your whole squad.

We have real injury problems and his hands are tied. We had four different back fours during the game and yet were so organised that our keeper had one save and that was the penalty. We had ten men on the park when we lost the goal and it came down our right where Donnelly would have been.

There is criticism of what he said about Donnelly and Livingston’s fitness levels. The rest of the team looked very fit. I' m sure he planned to get a couple of Rose, Gorrin, or Bigi on in the second half as it is energy sapping chasing without the ball for long periods but Campbell, Rose, Turnbull and Grimshaw all lasted really well.

Then we have the charge that he does not encourage youth. Many said Turnbull should have been in the team long before he was but in interviews his under 20 manager Craigen said he needed to increase his fitness and physical presence. He came back in the summer ready to step up and you could argue that Robinson introduced him exactly when he was ready – not before.

The charge of not introducing young players should now be put to bed after Livingston’s performance last night. The Football Manager experts on here were desperate for him to get in the team. To go off knackered with cramp after less than an hour on the park shows that he is not ready. I just hope he has not had so bad an experience that his development has been set back months which can happen to young players.

Rant over but while Robinson has his faults be careful what you wish. Owen Coyle anyone?

    Brilliant post

  13. Maybe that was a factor in his selection last night.
Exactly this, a 90 mins chasing the ball is better done by a player who is not also having to play on Saturday. Thought Sammon was poor in first half, but much better second half. Main and Bowman fresh for Saturday. Manager got it right even though it seemed puzzling at first.

  14. I think we'll see this:
    Gillespie
    Grimshaw Aldred McHugh Hartley Tait
    Gorrin, Rose, Turnbull
    Main, Johnson
The good thing is that there are several options so no excuses for players being out injured/inexperience etc.
I think you might be right, sure I saw a quote that Dunne is not going to make it but is expected to be back v Hearts

  15. . 'All our big performances have been when everyone has worked there socks off. As soon as that drops we look awful '

This is my biggest concern, I mentioned it last season. The amount of effort the players have to put in to win with this style of football is simply not sustainable. Hence a lot of injuries and our inability to 'kick on' after the occassional big performance. They are spent physically and mentally.

I'm desperate for Robbo to succeed and was cheered by the change of emphasis recently, but these comments worry the hell out of me. Really disappointing, just hope it is a misquote.

  16. Yeah, which the reserve coaching staff were keen to change... Immediately.
Wasn't the impression I got, but you may have more access than I to the inner workings. Agree he is a damned good footballer, had a very quick chat with him recently and loved his attitude.
