The player can take the free kick at any time unless the ref asks if the player would like him to put the players back 10 yards. If the player agrees with the ref to do this they must then wait for the whistle to be blown to take the free kick or be issued with a yellow card.

I'd agree, the first twenty minutes are vital though, if we can keep them out their fans will start to get restless.
