Its simple, if you have a season ticket then you will be in a priority position for a ticket to away games, if not you need to be content with however many tickets are left over. Like it or lump it, the club cant keep records of people who "had a season ticket for 400 years but didnt buy one for the last 4 due to work commitments". It just doesent work like that.
