  1. Different players in different positions, don't think there is any straight forward comparison. When O'Brien first arrived he was terrible but when he left I thought he was a great player. Probably the single biggest improvement in a player I've seen at Fir Park for a long while (Brian Martin didn't have a great start as I remember). I'd have him back any day and I'd pick him over Humphrey every time.
  2. The reason for signing youngish keepers that want to take there career onto the next level is to sell them but we've not made any money out of Ruddy or Randolph. Really, we just need a good goalkeeper. Doesn't matter what age he is or where he wants his career to go.
  3. Only problem with that is Formula One is an internaionally premier sporting brand. They can squeeze those sort of concessions out of broadcasters. Currently Sky can say to Scottish football "take it or leave it".
  4. Surely McFadden goes to the Ojamaa position and Higginbotham comes in?
  5. This will be the last chance for many people to see a team that has done superbly this season and for several seasons before hand. It could well be a return to reality next season depending on what happens during the summer so get out there and say thank you to one of the better Motherwell teams you are likely to see.
  6. Not so good. I saw Lee Hollis and Bob McHugh in town last night all dressed up but I didn't know it was the awards.
  7. Higdon has now got 26 league goals, joint second highest ever season tally from a non Old Firm striker in the Premier League era, along side John Robertson. Tommy Coyne's 33 goal record will probably never be beat you suspect...
  8. 20 years old, 43 goals in 53 matches.
  9. You don't have to go that far back for pumpings off Ayr! The first season I started going regularly (86/87) we won 1 of our first 14 home matches. You didn't even think about winning, you went home ecstatic if you saw a Motherwell goal!
  10. This. We had Dykstra in goal rather than Woods. Phil O'Donnell was in the side also. We played much better than season before and if I remember correctly actually won more matches and finished much closer to the eventual Champions. The 90's team was far superior defensively. I'd pick the entire back line over anyone we have now with the exception of Randolph. Randolph Shannon Martin McCart McKinnon It's difficult to compare both sides in midfield because they played different formations. Lambert would be straight in. Superb player. I'd pick Phil O'Donnnell over anyone in the current side as well but if we are restricting it to the 94-95 side it would be close between Billy Davies and Nicky Law. So I'd put Nicky Law on the left and play Davies in the middle and have McFadden on the right. If we needed a bit more steel in the midfield I'd probably replace Davies with Lasley. Lasley and Dolan were very similar players but I think Lasley has been good in a Motherwell shirt longer than Dolan was so he deserves the nod. McFadden Lambert Davies Law Tommy Coyne is the stand out striker we've had in my time and is a no brainer. He had a great partnership with Arnott and although Arnott wasn't ever a prolific striker (except against the OF!) he caused defenders all sorts of trouble and chipped in as well. So despite Higdon having a superb season I'd go for the nineties pairing there. Coyne Arnott
  11. We have a better points tally against the top six than Celtic do, so against the better teams we were the top dogs. Celtic won the league by putting the poorer teams away. They won 14 out of 18 against the bottom six. We drew far too many matches against the lower sides, 7 in total. I don't think we were far away though. If we could keep this team and added maybe a quality right back and centre back and maybe bring in a central midfielder to augment Law/Lasley I think we could actually challenge. Sadly, that's not going to happen.
  12. Jennings was a good player but I never thought he was going to be a huge lose. He was basically a tackler, there wasn't much more to his game, he didn't really offer anything in an offensive or creative sense. You can say we've not been as convincing defensively this season and no doubt some of that is down to missing Jennings in the middle but we have been a much better team to watch this season than last season, noticeably more attacking and creative and have much better options going forward. Having Nicky Law next to Lasley has moved us up to a different level.
  13. Tough one so I'm going to break the rules and give you them by preference. 1. McFadden 2. Randolph 3. Higdon 4. Law 5./6. Hateley/Humphrey I'd pick McFadden because he's a special player and I just love watching him. My second pick would be Randolph because I think the difference between an ordinary team and a good team is often a goalkeeper. My third pick would be Higdon because of the amount of goals he's scored and because I think he's really improved and is actually a much better player than when he joined. Law has done great but I don't think he's quite as crucial as the first three. Hateley and Humphrey I think are replaceable.
  14. I'm sure I heard £1.3m on Radio Scotland. Mind you it was a journalist so not a credible source!

    Celtic

Very good team performance. For me Lasley, Humphrey and Randolph were all superb, with Hammell not far behind. Ojamma had a good second half but I don't think he had much impact until he scored his goal. I'd give it to Humphrey because he absolutely terrorized Izaguirre.
  16. I was being a bit tongue and cheek but I can't remember us cutting open Celtic like that for a long time. Should have been 4 at least.
  17. Just back from the game and I'm disappointed. It was only three.
  18. Games at this end of the season are difficult to predict. Will Celtic be really going for it? What kind of team will they put out? If they use fringe players will they play out their skin or will their lack of games show? There's a lot of variables. Hopefully, our boys put in a performance and whatever the result I'll be happy.
  19. Players of the Season 1. Michael Higdon - Incredible scoring exploits 2. Darren Randolph - Best goalkeeper we've had in the 30 years I've watched us 3. Nicky Law - Classy player who showed he can play at a higher level Young Player of the Season Zane Francis Angol - Started the season as a dodgy looking left back, developed into a tasty looking left midfielder. Goal of the Season Kallum Higginbotham - Probably goal of the decade! Signing of the Season James McFadden - Great to see him strut his stuff again at Fir Park. Class.
  20. Agree. From the waist down it's good. For me the 'real' Motherwell strip includes white shorts so I'm happy to get them back and I always like hooped socks. The top is disappointing because it could have been great with just a couple of alterations. It seems like they were just throwing design elements on to it when they should have left it alone. I don't mind the arms so much but the neck design is poor and why are the side panels there? Designers need to keep things simple. There is no need to have claret side panels there and no hoop going all the way round. Not the worst we've ever had but I feel like a few adjustments it could have been a really good kit.
  21. I think Leigh Griffiths will be favourite. As well as goal scoring I think, whether you like him or not, you'd have to concede he is technically a better player than Higdon and as someone else said, Griffiths has been playing in a much poorer team for most of the season. Gary Mackay-Stevens would be the obvious pick for young player of the year but he's not actually played that many matches due to injury. Wanyama has been hot and cold and has probably faded a bit as the season went on - I thought he was pretty poor when we beat them at Fir Park.
  22. Niall McGinn and Johnny Hayes have been terrible signings for Aberdeen this season. Only scored 22 of their 38 goals this season. As for Hibs their team this season has pretty much been - Williams, Clancy, Hanlon, McPake, McGivern, Wotherspoon, Claros, Taiwo, Stevenson, Griffiths and Doyle. Out of that 11 the only player they signed from another SPL team was Tim Clancy from us.
  23. Neil Doncaster already admitted this on radio. The whole format change was nothing more than a wee bit of skirt lifting for Sky. As I said this time last year with the whole Rangers debacle, Sky is a villan in the shadows here. They never make statements, they openly criticise or support initiatives but their influence on Scottish football is completely noxious. They have chairman of football clubs like Aberdeen running around like lickspittles, trying to please their 'masters'. I will repeat it again and again. Until Scottish football turns its back on live football and re-adjusts its finances accordingly we will be in a permanent state of crisis.
  24. "The resolution at the meeting in this house last year was to take everything out of 11-1 and make it 9-3 and there is no way in the world that Aberdeen and also Hearts, Hibs and Dundee United would ever take home gates [home clubs retaining all gate money] and one or two other items out of protected status." This doesn't make any sense. 9-3 was not considered because 4 (probably 5 if you include Celtic) would never accept less than 100% home gate money retention? So just vote it down, using 9-3 with a considerable margin, if it were ever to come up for discussion, which I've not heard any one actually mention. If this is the reason 9-3 was not put in place it's a bullshit reason. I wonder what these other one or two items were?
  25. Allan Preston, who is also an agent of course, said he heard Randolph was on his way to Nottingham Forest.
