  1. I think we also have to remember the difference between being shite in the Premiership, and being shite in the SPL.

A manager from a struggling EPL side could quite feasibly be much better than a manager doing well in the SPL.

A McGhee/Levein/Calderwood side would be handed their arse on a plate on a weekly basis by most EPL sides.

The good news on this one is that we will have some insider knowledge. Crags will know what he is like and will be able to pass over some hints to JB. I know that it will be based on an International context but certainly in terms of motivation and style of play it should transfer.

  2. Don't know if this has been mentioned but did anyone hear Craig Brown on Radio Scotland at lunchtime.

He certainly did not rule himself out saying that he had a lot of fond memories of his time at Well but that he had not been approached by the club.

He also bigged up Gary McAllister and mentioned that Macca always used to talk alot about Motherwell.

My choice would be Craig Brown as a sort of Director of Football and Gary McAllister as Manager. Kind of like the Alex Smith, Elvis thing that seems to be happening at Falkirk.

  3. Yeah, my vote was originally for Brown, but having second thoughts and going towards Nijholt or Mac, with Mac edging it.

I have changed too. My original vote was A.N Other (representing Paul Lambert) but as he has ruled himself out I am between Luc and Macca. If Craig Brown came with McAllister then that would sway it for me, but I think that would be heavy on the wage bill.

  4. Ive played aginst Adams, ive played against a team managedby Adams and trust me if thats what were wanting to take us forward we will get nowhere!

Mourin-Hoe, as someone who appears to have played at a reasonable level, from a players perspective, who do you think will capture the imagination and respect of the Well players? My guess would be that McCallister would certainly provide the wow factor for the players.

  5. I was always fairly positive on McGhee - however the way he has handled himself over the past couple of weeks has fair cheesed me off. If I see another picture of his shammy gabbit mush anywhere else over the next month. . . . . .

Anyway it's good to see that he's learning new skills - that he didnt have at Fir Park- in his new job already. namely:-

Signing up the clubs top players on long term deals. . . .

    Signing players . . . . . .

If this comes off, the signing of these players will be seen by many as really underhand.

I think it would only be underhand if McGhee had been planting the seeds for these moves back at Easter time. Given that there would have been a lot of if's buts and maybe's back then I am prepared to give him the benifit of the doubt.

We also have to be careful about double standards. I have read a few times over the last few days on here 'If we got Jeffries he would bring Kyle' etc .

Having said that, if Hughes and Klimpl are playing in red at FP next season I may not be as diplomatic.

  6. It's a joke that people even mention the word "harm" to the club when discussing McGhee. Honestly, football fans

To take the word harm totally out of context and make a deal of it? Mmmmm!

I think your at it buddy.

    Honestly, attention seekers :)

  7. After only a month or so at the club, Mark McGhee stated that the team would need to score at least 2 goals in the early part of the game because with our defence we would lose at least one goal.

I felt that he hadn't fulfilled this part of his job by the end of last season because his eye had been on the hearts job since the January, but a year on and he still hadn't strengthened the defence at all.

Similarly, I felt that we were a one trick pony. Our speed and one touch football ran over most teams but when this didn't work there was no plan B.

Also in crucial games if he tried to tinker with our style of play (the cup, Nancy at home and St Mirren at FP when fighting for top 6), we were always found wanting.

There is no doubt that the transformation from May 2007 to the 2007/08 season was the most dramatic turn around I've seen in a group of players in the almost 50 years I've been going to Fir Park. However, I'm sure that, although we just missed out on a top 6 place, there weren't that many games I remember from last season that were a patch on 07/08.

I think that the core group of players we now have at Fir Park are better for Mark McGhee having been there but I'm not sure that overall, (depth of squad etc) a new manager will inherit much more than McGhee did.

I think this sums things up nicely.

My biggest gripe is that there was never a long term plan. By January of the first year most Well fans knew that McGhee was not going to be there for long. His signings were short term fixes (Hughes, Klimpl and Porter), admitedly good ones, and the lack of transfer activity leading up to the end of this season told us all we needed to know.

Stephen Hughes was giving indication before the top 6 was finalised that he would not re-sign as was Graeme Smith. I think that may have been because McGhee could give them no assurances that he would be at the club.

He played Hughes and Sheridan on the last day of the season. Why? I could understand Hughes as it could have been a final bow but Sheridan? I can only think he had his -I'm going to be your manager at Celtic next season- hat on when he did that.

If as someone quoted above we only have 14 first team players that is a poor state to leave a club in by anybody's book.

Overall I am pleased he was with us and he did much more good than harm, but his time at Motherwell was far from perfect.

    Seems about right. Cheers. :D

  9. Report in scumday mail suggests Macallister would take the job for myself i think this would be a mistake as he he would be another Magoo off at first opportunity IF he was a success 10 managers in last 7 years says it all the club MUST get this right and Gary mac is wrong direction.

We are going to have to accept that if JB does appoint the right man there is a very good chance that he will be gone after a few seasons.

After Friday's disappointment I am starting to get excited again. If it was any one of Nijholt, McAllister, Gannon then I would be happy.

I would also be happy if we were waving good bye to our new manager in 2011 because we had beaten Aberdeen to 3rd place two seasons in a row.

  10. Just read THIS interview with McGhee.........

However the new Aberdeen boss said he has no intentions of attempting to lure any more of his former playing staff from Fir Park to the Granite City.

He said: "I'm not going to go back there and start pillaging Motherwell. I have too much respect for what they are trying to do. Stephen Hughes is a different kettle of fish as he is out of contract and available.

"There are some great players at Motherwell who are going to go on and become even better. But at this moment in time they would be out of our price range."

McGhee admits he is not going to be given a huge amount of money to splash during the summer but is hopeful of bringing new faces to Pittodrie.

Just a couple of comments that can, if people want to, show McGhee talking about Motherwell in a positive way.

The fact is, it does not matter what he says, people are going to pick holes in it to suit there own agenda.

He has talked up the club, John Boyle, the player and surprisingly the supporters. As a support we have given him little credit for what he has achieved and at times very little support with what has been a very tight budget.

I happen to think he says too much. He is too open and honest with the press, almost niavely so, but at least it is honest and positive regarding Motherwell.

What he is effectively saying is that he could do no more with Motherwell. If he could he may have stayed. It would be interesting to see if he would have stayed had Hughes, Porter. Smith, Klimpl signed on for another term.

I don't want to put words into Flow's mouth but based on some of his comments on this site, I get the feeling that those who have worked directly with McGhee offer him no ill will and in fact have respect for the man.

Let's get the new man in and look to the future.

  11. I don't get this. The majority of the support would not want him as manager and yet we are pissed of because he did not take the managers job.

What was he supposed to do? Stay as No2 waiting for any Tom, Dick or Harry to come in as his Boss?

He will be on better wages with a No 1 he has built a good working relationship with and trusts. As well as that he is offering to help out untill we find a replacement.

There is no pleasing football supporters sometimes. Anyway I always thought Leitch was a Rangers fan.

I think the bigger concern is that he was offered the job in the first place.

  12. Have to be honest this "bandwagon" for Luc Nijholt leaves me a bit bemused. I have not opinion on him one way or the other - I just think some are getting a bit too carried away.

In any event - only 85 people have voted for him out of 241. This site has 1,109 registered users - so less than a quarter of the users have voted. Also do not forget that a sizeable number of our supporters do not have internet access and then there are those who do but are not registered on this site.

So to say that Nijholt is the fans choice is lacking any foundation.

    Stuart.

It's called a representive sample. Opinion polls don't survey an entire population but do give a representation of how a section of that population will vote. That sample is then projected onto the full population. As it stands this poll is the best representation we have so it is not an unreasonable claim.

  13. Pedigree and he plays flowing football.

Would perhaps represent Boyle pulling another rabbit out the hat.

I wouldnt be too dissapointed if he rocked up to fir park - going on that read anyway.

Who will advice John Boyle on who to go for? I just can't see that JB will know these names off his own back. Will they use these messageboards as a reference or is that being naive?

I suppose the easiest way is to invite applications.

  14. While im glad to see him go - glad after the Sunday Herald article, all the McGhee quotes i've read on here this past hour don't show him saying anything good about us, maybe thats been posted up here for a reason..... agenda??

    Heres what he said.

    http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/displa...erdeen_boss.php

"It was a difficult decision but I feel it was the right decision," he said. "Things have moved on a little bit.

"Motherwell had lost two or three players and we looked like losing two or three more due to the circumstances in the Scottish game, so it was becoming more and more difficult to maintain the performance and levels that we set over the last couple of years. "I felt that the opportunity to go to Aberdeen, to a more stable environment, would allow me to make more of a challenge over the next few years than might be possible with Motherwell. It is a shame, I loved my time there."

Even if he didnt mean it, at least he has said he loved his time with us.

Don't you just love the Glasgow press. When it's the most natural thing in the world to head the story with 'Former Aberdeen star' they head it with 'Former Celtic star'

A rather worrying insight there into his thinking for leaving. He must feel that Well are heading into turbulent times, with or without him. Pleased he said the last bit.

  15. Congratulations John Boyle. You picked a man from the managerial wilderness, he gave us two good seasons and then you got a tidy sum when he moved on. Good bit of business.

Let's see if you can do the same again so that in two years time we will be celebrating another 200k in the coffers. After all that 200k will pay for a decent manager for a few seasons.

FWIW I hope Aberdeen are up there giving the Old Firm a hard time next season. It was a breath of fresh air when Burley went to Hearts and did the same.

  16. Went for Yes because of all the replacement names mentioned he is still best of the bunch. I understand the point about the relationship breaking down with the fan's but this season there has not been much of a relationship anyway.

  17. Problem being that, we don't really want him and they do. They're using that fact to try and haggle here. What should have happened is that when Aberdeen first made their 'official' approach to Motherwell to ask permission to talk to him, the compensation issue should have been ironed out then...

I think Boyle would want to keep him. He said so at the start of the week. Ok you have a manager who does not want to be at Well but he still has to work hard to keep his profile up. Boyle's a business man, I don't think he will worry too much about sentiment. After all McGhee has played the whole thing as a business man openly using Motherwell as a stepping stone.

So it's a win, win for Boyle. Get 200k comp or keep the manager. It's Aberdeen that can loose out here.

  18. I heard about this really early doors (post Romanovgate) - that there was a clause where he would be allowed to be released from his contract with the club if one of a number of teams offered him a position. it was said somewhere else that the teams were named (although that might be just a bit too messy)

basically he moves nowhere during this contract unless the new club or himself pays Motherwell 200K.

So why should it take so long? That's a 1 min conversation.

Boyle- ' Will you pay the 200K comp?'

    Milne/Miller- 'No'

    Boyle- ' Ok see ya'

  19. Didn't the hibees demand Frank Sauzee? That was a disaster

I think there is a difference between what will get the fans excited and what is best for the club. For me the names I think are exciting are Gary McAllister, Luc Niljolt or Paul Lambert because of the link with the club and the possibility that this could go really well and we are top 3 again next season. The downside to these names are, it is a risk

On the other hand there is Jimmy Calderwood, Gordon Chisholm, Jim Jeffries who will head us towards mid to lower table respectability without the fear of relegation but without setting the heather on fire either.

Personally I would rather take the chance and head for Europe or the First Division next year. 11th place safety makes me think one thing, Maurice Malpas. Why not. It looks like the SPL is going down the toilet anyway.

  20. Don't know why I think this, but I think that sounds like a genuine offer. For all I don't like the way McGhee deals with things in the Press, I hope that he leaves Motherwell on good terms and with some kind of lasting affinity with the club.

Lets see if he can tap into those European contacts now!

  21. Just a guess but I think that both AFC and MFC would have been shaking their respective heads when they saw that article in the Sunday Herald.

It possibly forced Aberdeen into some form of announcement today when thy would rather have remained quiet and done things properly.

Would be funny to think that McGhee's very first act as Aberdeen manager to be, is to be in the papers bumping his gums inappropriately. Start as you mean to go on I suppose.
