Tid Posted March 18, 2011 Report Share Posted March 18, 2011 Here's one for the troops. what about a top five of games you've witnessed while watching Motherwell? interesting to see what people choose depending on the time they've been following the team. the obvious one for most my era will be the cup win obviously so let's take that out of the equation & go for every other match bar that one. the cup semi replay against Celtic will always be up there for me so I'll go for that as number one with the following as the best of the rest in no particular order. Played them 3 times in a week or so, winning 1-0 at the piggery in the league with Nicky Cusack scoring a heider & then drew 0-0 at Hampden before beating them 4-2 in the replay after being told we'd missed our chance. i just can't get enough?......................f*ckin' right! 6-6 v Hibs - most recent of the classics but definitely up there with the all time greats..............now imagine if Forbes had scored that pen & it ended 7-6. 3-2 v Hearts at Easter Road league cup semi. Don't think many will argue with that being right up there. 0-1 v Dortmund. OK it was a defeat but anyone witnessing that game would agree we were f*ckin' dynamite that night in Germany. created loads of chances & should have won on the night. pity about the collapse for the home leg but hey-ho. 3-1 v Aberdeen at Pittodrie a few years back was superb for me. Jim Hamilton scored a 40 yard wonder goal (check it on you-tube if you've missed it) & Skippy scored a screamer after rounding the keeper from a crazily tight angle. a few older memories like winning 5-0 at Dunfermline with Johnny Gahagan scoring a sublime chip & the likes of Tynecastle when Stevie Kirk ended in goals after the keeper got KO'd by some Jambo c*nt & saved a penalty in a game when we came back from 2 down if I remember correctly. Been going to games since i was 5 but really can't remember much about any of them before about 10/12. So my top 5 in that time would be in order- 1- motherwell 6-6 hibs 2-motherwell 2-1 celtic 3-motherwell 2-1 aberdeen to qualify for europe 4-motherwell 3-4 rangers 5-motherwell 0-2 nancy Wasn't at the cup semi against hearts, that would be up there though as would the 6-5 against aberdeen and any win against the OF. Watched it in the Boozer pub in Wishy with three other well fans & about 200 currant buns. Nearly got lynched & called for everything of the clientele in there that day for springing about in front of the big screen when we scored. Remember they had dozens of bottles of champagne in the fridges ready to celebrate. Nae corks poppin' that night eh? F*ckin magic day!!!!!!!! Most recent 'big' game for me was Tynecastle post-Phil. Not so much about the result, but the turnout in general, and by my own wee gathering of pals... And the dog-napping on the corpy bus much, much later in the day was a bit special. Even more recently is having the wee fella onboard for games... Tid Posted March 19, 2011 Author Report Share Posted March 19, 2011 Skippy Sunday would have been right up there, if to my eternal shame I hadn't given ma season ticket to a Celtic fan fae Livingston who was one of ma biggest customers through work at the time. he had been on to me looking to see if I could get a ticket from Fir Park for him & I thought f*ck it, we've nothing to play for & ah didnae fancy watching the rotten mob celebrating in our stadium, pubs & streets so offered him ma ticket in the East stand. he called me on the Monday saying he'd never been as intimidated in his whole life & that the baying mob round about him were hand picking people "who looked remotely Sellick orientated" & singling them out for abuse he somehow managed to escape unscathed & told me he would never venture in to the home end again!!! & this from a guy who had followed Celtic for years away from home. he still brings it up now & then saying it's the worst experience he's had in any football ground. so cheers to the East stand boys for that one. oh aye & we've hardly had an order from his company since! When we went from 3-1 down to 4-3 up I went so mental I took a dizzy turn and almost collapsed! Shame Marshall sold the win in injury time. Think that was his last game for us. I'm sure that it's still the only time we've ever scored 4 against the Old Firm in a match in my lifetime. I still maintain the best game I've ever been at Fir Park was against Falkirk. 2-1 up, 3-2 down, miss two penalties, win 5-3! Not picking another 3, just too difficult. Reason being, it was my birthday, 6th January, and we won it 5-0 with five different scorers... Jeez, that takes me back...I had only turned 16 or 17 that day!! Tid Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Share Posted March 20, 2011 kirky, we almost share a birthday mate. mine's is the 5th January. to be honest I couldn't have told you that's when that Dunfermline game was but fair play to you for minding that. decent present for us that year then! as for the Hearts game after Phil died, definite special occassion that one obviously right up there too. skol cup semi at Hampden when we came back from 2-0 down against Celtic to take the game in to extra-time & pens before Softie rattled the bar & Tommy Burns scored the winning pen was an unbelievable night as well albeit with a shite outcome. also fond memories of playing Celtic at Hampden in the league when they set up camp there whilst the piggery was being rebuilt. again came back from 2-0 down with a TC double before he missed an easier chance than the first two heading past the post in the closing seconds which would have completed a monumental come-back. clearly remember Tommy Burns the then Sellick manager saying "we've a long way to go before we're as good as Motherwell"! when interviewed after the game. IIRC we had Billy Davies, Paul Lambert & Jamie Dolan (rip) in the midfield that day & they were dynamite. no' many OF managers over the years have had to come out with that statement. proud as f*ck that night watching the highlights. Not picking another 3, just too difficult. pishing masel laughing at the quote above about taking a dizzy turn & nearly collapsing. remember at Parkheid when we were 1-0 up going in to the final seconds & Mickey Weir scored from about an inch efter tripping over the baw & nearly missing. thought I was gonnae have a f*ckin' stroke celebrating that one. just remember everyone round about us roaring "F*CKIN' HIT IT!!!!" ended up falling over about 3 rows wi' half the Well support in a massive pile-up. other one that springs to mind is beating them at Parkheid again (recurring theme here or whit?) wi' Bobby Russell & his famous shimmy king goal in the last minute to win 2-1 in '89. I was just back from the Cyprus Scotland game (when Gough scored about 8 mins into injury time for us to win 3-2) & went to Parkhead that day rough as f*ck. Happy days. I never let him live it down... ) 2 - 3-2 Hearts Semi (My first run in with L&B Police) 3 - 2-0 Rangers to stop their 9-in-a-row 4 - 1-0 against Dumferline when big Van Der Gaag scored that fucking screamer!!! 5 - 3-2 and 2-1 against Celtic. Brazilian Posted March 20, 2011 Report Share Posted March 20, 2011 some fantastic evocative posts, was at a lot of the games mentioned and had similar emotive experiences with huge highs from thrilling games but on a slighlty different trait McGhees first? league game at St Mirren, season opener 2007, was a fantastic experience as a Motherwell fan, after a thoroughly depressing season, watching that game filled me with genuine hope and even belief that we were going to see some cracking football. the fitness, formation, fast movement of the ball was a pleasure to watch, every single player looked like they were perfect for their role, it was like a new dawn. G Smith Quinn Craigan Reynolds Paterson Lasley O'Donnell Fitzpatrick Clarkson Porter McGarry some of the football we played in the first part of that season delivered on that early hope and belief, and the last game of 2007 vs Dundee Utd, could easily be considered for every ones top five, the terrible news that broke soon after fulltime that day will mean that even the fantastic football on show that day gets overshadowed by the tragic event,we witnessed but didn't fully appreciate until later in the day. cameltoe Posted March 20, 2011 Report Share Posted March 20, 2011 Tearing Hearts apart at Fir Park the season after we went into administration, we were drifting away at the bottom whereas hearts were riding high in third, pearo and faddy tore the jambos apart and we were 4-0 up after 30 odd mins, big David Partridge even hit a thunder bolt clerance off his own cross bar LOL, 6-1 win what a midweek game . Some from Leftfield.......... 1-0 at Parkhead 1994, the day after the Beggarz were saved from oblivion. Dougie scores and over 2000 'Well fans sing "Part-time supporters, you're only part-time supporters. 1-0 at Swynecastle 1982, kept the Jambos in the 1st Div and we went up as Champs, and I started work in Edinburgh the following week. 3-2 against the Tims in the Cup in the mid 70's. 2 down at half-time then up step Bobby Graham, Ian Taylor and the Grew to make it 3-2. 3-1 v Spurs in the Texaco Cup 1971. We lost the 1st leg 3-2 and the Double winning Spurs side scored early at Fir Park. Brian Heron, Bobby Watson and Tom Donnelly sent a packed Fir Park wild as we progressed to the Semi. 3-0 v the Buns in 1991 2nd last game of season. Hearts 2-1 to get to the CIS cup final 4. Kilmarnock 1-2. Strange choice here, we got beat at FP but we absolutely hammered them that day. Wave after wave of attack and somehow managed to lose. 5. Dundee Utd 5-3. Obviously game will be remembered for other reasons, but anybody who was there witnessed a tremendous game for 75 minutes.
