A Worse Game

TBH Because lying about the state of the game "makes it better". It is how the Premiership went from a meh, it's OK to supposedly the best league in the world, which if anyone who has ESPN knows it's not even in the top 3 that they show for entertainment or technical quality.

 

I think a wee bit more went into it than that. World class players, managers, coverage, full stadiums, very good games, goals, etc.

 

However, the people who talk it up are the ones who are benefiting from the game financially. Whether it is Arsene Wenger, Chris Kamara, Keys and Gray and so on. Their public opinion is based on the growth and success of the league which will also assist their bank balances/keep them in jobs. Graham Spiers, Chic Young, Rob MacLean, Terry Butcher etc. are all doing a similar job up here. Some have opinions that are pretty honest. Others are spouting rubbish imo. I have heard Chic Young and Terry Butcher state in the last seven days that the football up here this season has been "fantastic". I've heard Jim Traynor and Stuart Cosgrove pretty much scoff at the mere suggestion. I'm more with the latter.

 

As fans we should be totally objective and impartial and say how it really is. However, I can only really comment on the Motherwell games I have been too. The only games I haven't been to this season were Aberdeen and ICT away and the game yesterday. I can honestly say I have been pretty disappointed with the majority of games and bored rigid at quite a few. The game at Tynecastle being a bit of a 'football low' as far as realising value for money etc.

 

Are fans of Aberdeen, Hibs, Killie etc. seeing a better quality product than we are at the moment? I can't say for sure but it is possible. The football on show at Fir Park this season, imo, has been rank.

I think there's clearly a balance to be struck in how things are perceived.

 

As much as there are those who make a living from the game who for their own reasons will want to accentuate the positives similarly there are those who have made lengthy careers from being downright negative and for whom every setback brings an opportunity to twist the knife further (hello Hugh)

 

As someone who pays your money your opinion on the "product" I'd should be more relevant and more valid than most, yet the fact is it'll be least considered viewpoints of them all.

 

You're then into that well trodden debate of what you use as your basis for comparison as to where Scottish football stands.

 

Should you consider the leagues from down south or southern Europe with the billions involved and a constant diet of football that's beamed into your living room, or should you look at the likes of the Scandanavian or some of the central-eastern European leagues for a more balanced comparison. But of course a few aside, the vast majority aren't going to be able to comment because you just don't see those leagues covered in the way you do the Spanish, English, French or Italian leagues are.

Thought yesterday was bearable for a nilnil but the standard of the league continues to deteriorate.

Certainly not a classic by any means but watched most of the "best league in the world" live games over the weekend & the only difference was the fact that the stadiums are full & the atmosphere is a hundred times better. All the games were completely devoid of chances with teams cancelling each other out completely. The only way to counter that is to make it a fiver to get in & dish out free tickets to the schools for these live games to at least try & make the place look busier & try to generate some sort of atmosphere. The money we get from Sky or ESPN should make up for the shortfall in the money made at the gate & the club would surely make more money from the Cooper bar, pie stalls & club shop in my opinion.

 

Nothing worse than watching your team on the tv & folk commenting it was like watching an amateur game at the local park cos there's naebody there.

I remember a 1-0 defeat at home to Aberdeen in the pelting rain about 10 years ago. And in the car home my coupon got gubbed for over £100 by a 95th min equaliser. Now THAT was worse. So was getting humped 4-0 by Hibs 2 weeks ago.

Seemed to be one of those weekends really, more 0-0 draws than normally noticeable so not just us.

 

England has always had the major advantage of bigger crowds, fitba' isnae much better than ours IMO though, for all their world class players and managers. One example, our 6-6 draw with Hibs was ridiculed, Arsenal and Reading in the League Cup serves up a similar number of goals and excitement yet draws major platitudes. Attitudes play a major part in the success of their game, all positive to the extent you want to stick your fingers down your throat when big ears Lineker starts on about the upcoming MotD programme whereas up here I find our meedja extremely negative.
