Normal practice would be approach the parents first, and then out of courtesy the coach. This does not say much for A) the enquiring club, which should get a severe reprimand and B) the Coach, who has got his priorities all wrong. This says a lot about the state of UK football.

I know when my lad played at the Cumbernauld Colts, the coach for Pro Youth at Stenny spoke to the coach and then got the parents over to talk to him.

 

I don't think the coach has the right to say No, not at least without letting you know there's been an approach.
