Well Well
I've built a club-by-club history of Scottish football and, being a Motherwell supporter, the Motherwell page is the one I've worked hardest on: https://scottishfootballhistory.scot/clubs/motherwell/ Every claim on it links to where it came from. The 1927 Spain tour, the treble season and the 1886 Glencairn/Alpha origins are all there, credited to Motherwell F.C. History and the Heritage Trust where the images are theirs. Where the sources disagree, the page says so instead of choosing. I'd like to know what you make of it - what you'd want added, what reads wrong, what's missing. There's a corrections page and anything you flag gets fixed and logged.
Happy Dosser
Had a quick look and this looks like an enormous amount of work. Will look furrit to digesting it at leisure and full marks for finding the true origin of our beautiful C&A: Lord Hamilton of Dalzell's racing colours were red and white. Well Well
Update since I posted this: the site's grown a fair bit - all 79 senior clubs now covered, Highland and Lowland Leagues both complete alongside the SPFL, and citations up from 13,721 to 15,616. Thanks Joe Wark. Corrections page is still there if anyone spots anything on the Motherwell page - I'd genuinely rather know.
Well Well
A small follow-up on the Scottish Football History site, for anyone who has visited the Motherwell page. The wider record has now reached 120 published club histories, covering active and defunct clubs across the game. The site also now has a compare-clubs tool, a searchable On This Day record, an image archive with credits, an honours archive, a pyramid guide and a map of current and former grounds. The Motherwell page remains one I’m particularly keen to get right. If anything reads wrong, feels incomplete, or you have a source or local detail worth adding, please say so — corrections are checked, fixed and logged publicly. https://scottishfootballhistory.scot/clubs/motherwell/
Well Well
Update for anyone who had a look at the Motherwell page before: since I last posted, the site's gone from 120 to 209 published club histories, and the women's pyramid is now covered top to bottom - Motherwell F.C. Women now has their own page too. A few Motherwell-specific things fixed or added along the way: the McLeish/Euro 2008 record corrected, a run of citations swapped from bare Wikipedia titles to direct article links, and the founding and promotion facts for the women's section added. Both pages also now carry a closed-by-default "wider context" box for anyone who wants to read past the facts into how the club's story connects to the wider game. Same offer as before - have a look, tell me what's wrong. Well Well
Update for the week to 4 October. The site is still at 209 clubs, and citations are now at 19,684, about a thousand of them added this week. No new clubs; the week went on checking what's already there against the papers of the day. Corrections St Johnstone's club historian, Alastair Blair, contacted us with a number of corrections which proved invaluable. The club was formed at a meeting on 24 February 1885, not in 1884, and our map had the Recreation Grounds 2.4km away in a housing estate, copied from a wrong Wikipedia infobox. Checking his letter against the papers turned up more of our own mistakes, now fixed: the Muirton Park opener on Christmas Day 1924 was 2-1 to Saints, Sanderson both; the 1969 League Cup final crowd was 73,067; and it's Kenny Deuchar, not Kevin. His and Brian Doyle's books are now cited, with their permission. Thanks to both. That prompted a check of every ground on the map against the old OS maps. Twelve were in the wrong place and have moved, including Kilmarnock's Holm Quarry, the first Celtic Park and Rangers' Fleshers' Haugh. Rechecked against the papers Dundee United: 27 chapters, about 225 new citations. The 1980 League Cup final goals were Dodds two and Sturrock one; the 1982-83 ninety goals was a record shared that season with Celtic; and the Livingston play-off semi was lost 2-3 at home and drawn 1-1 away. Dundee: the modern chapters, about 650 new citations. The 2023 Championship was won 5-3 at Ochilview, where Queen's Park were playing their home games, and the 2012 SPL vote on the Rangers newco was "overwhelming" in the Belfast Telegraph's report, not unanimous. Bellshill Athletic's junior years, from the Bellshill Speaker and others: the protested 1913 semi-final against Newton Villa, the 1913-14 Scottish Junior Cup tie with Mossend Hibs that ran to four games, and the 1923 Glasgow Cup final at Firhill on 26 May, about 8,000 there. The SFA Annuals are now cited for Morton's Garvel Park, Dundee's Carolina Port and Raith's Stark's Park. Crests Deveronvale and Annan Athletic have given permission, and their badges are on their pages. Thanks to both clubs. Next week the Premiership re-check carries on, Falkirk next. As ever, if you spot something wrong, the corrections page is there and I fix things in public. https://scottishfootballhistory.scot
