Europe 2011/12

Scotland are 16th in the rankings for the 2011/12 UEFA Club Competitions.

Champions League

The winners of this season's Clydesdale Bank Premier League are scheduled to enter in the second qualifying round (champions' pathway) but may go into qualifying round three if the 2010/11 Champions League winners qualify through their domestic league position.

Europa League

The SPL runners-up and the Scottish Cup winners enter in qualifying round three, with the third-placed team in the SPL coming in at qualifying round two.

In the event that the cup winners qualify for the Champions League then the cup winner entry to the Europa League will be taken by the club which finishes 2nd in the SPL; the entry normally for the club which finishes 2nd in the SPL would be taken by the club which finishes 3rd; the entry normally for the club which finishes 3rd would be taken by the runner-up in the Scottish Cup

So to get into the Europa League next year we will either need to finish 2nd, 3rd, or as runners up in the Scottish Cup. Not going to be as 'easy' as last season but still not impossible. Shows you how far our collective stock has fallen in European football.

Thought that's the way it would work. Fair chance 4th spot will grab a European spot as well if 2 of the top 3 are competing in the Scottish Cup Final. We're looking a good bet for third at the moment though.

That had me thinking......is this still an option?

So pretty much the same as last year except the 2nd placed team doesn't get into the Champions League qualifying stages but goes directly into the Europa league.

Hopefully this season we won't have to win a game against Hibs at home to secure 4th. I feel confident one of the OF will be in the Scottish Cup final, reckon 2011 has at least a domestic double in it for Watty as its his swansong.
