The mum of tragic footballer Phil O'Donnell has died just days after the third anniversary of the star's death.

Winifred, 79, passed away on Sunday night following a long illness.

Her 35-year-old son Phil suffered a heart attack on the pitch and died on December 29, 2007.

Friends said Winifred never fully recovered from the Celtic and Motherwell idol's death.

Last night a family source said: "We're all shattered. Winnie had been ill for a while but it doesn't make it any easier. Everyone is devastated." Another source added: "It is quite a shock, as it happened so close to the anniversary of Phil's death.

"The whole O'Donnell family are in bits at the moment."

Phil's 37-year-old widow Eileen, of Hamilton, was yesterday too upset to speak.

Winifred was grandmother to the couple's four children Megan, 15, Christopher, 13, Olivia, 10, and seven-year-old Luc.

Following Phil's death, heartbroken Winifred and dad Bernard comforted their family during an emotional funeral service at St Mary's Church in Hamilton.

You have to feel for her, as the last few years can't have been easy at all.

I can't imagine what it must be like to lose a child. Rest In Peace & condolences to the O'Donnell family.
