Prudence should be the name of the game even if we get millions for Miller. The last thing we need to be doing is following the John Boyle Model of Recruitment & Financial Management.

To my way of thinking we won’t see many, if any, further signings in the next few weeks until the club knows what cash it’s going to receive from the sale of Miller. The club - or the society don’t have a few million stashed away that they can afford to lose if a big money move for Miller doesn’t materialise and although it’s unlikely to happen, prudence is the name of the game. I’ve no doubt that they’ll have spoken with players and possibly agreed verbal terms on the condition of Miller being sold but those players may still sign for another team meanwhile.

So irrespective of people saying no no no Wellfan it wasn't you - this is the post that instigated all the chat over it's just a friendly but the points made are much deeper and can be taken over a much longer time period. 1. Not Proven! Oxborough has shown enough to be a Motherwell first team player. But when he is injured there is some serious question marks over a suitable number 2. Ward didn't impress on his debut and over the next 5-6 games we can see exactly where he is. Balcombe was not good enough last season. The point of getting a good second keeper remains valid but maybe answered by Ward or not in the forthcoming games. 2. Guilty! Not based on last night but over a 6 month period. Wilson looks the back up and we need to sign a first team left back. 3. Guilty! over a long term we cannot afford a player who continually loses us sloppy goals - we cannot afford that over a season. 4. Guilty! Again we need a first team level central defender. 5. Not Proven! Too early to say on Elliot Watt his description is very much a Lennon Miller type player. Halliday as we know is not that. Again after 6-7 games we will know. 6. Not Proven! He was on fire playing in a wide position of a 3 when he first arrived. Now he's playing as a number ten. Play him as a winger and see if he can be what we need. I think he may be. 7. Not Guilty! Stama I rate highly but only in the right system - alongside a big number 9 and playing off him or with two wingers either side. Play to peoples strengths. Don't make him what he is not. 8. Guilty! Every foreign manager (see Valakari) tries this at first. They soon learn! 9. Not proven! Last nights evidence didn't tell us much - but a little - what he is trying to do we do not have the quality to do. So irrespective of Twente game or not - these points should be taken over the course & considering they have all got very valid aspects to them - this is the real discussion.

To be fair - we've had a few signings that fans have thought were odd and have come good Pretty sure JBA will have done his homework on us and is aware of the teams weak points. Yeah. I think this is a very decent appointment.
-
I can see where you're coming from here. Where we differ perhaps is that I'm excited by JBA's appointment. A bold one certainly. However, he'll take some weeks to get up to speed with the squad with its shortcomings. As you say, many were obvious last season. However, its early in the transfer window and we have time to bring in a number of much needed reinforcements. Our immediate problem is that the League Cup kicks off in about 10 days time and we only have one more friendly arranged before then. I hope coaches at the club have been briefing him about our long standing shortcomings. I'm a little concerned about the signing of Elliot Watt. He's a strange signing and I just wonder who was behind that. No doubt he was presented to JBA as a fait accompli. On the plus side I'm not worried about Lennon Miller's departure as his influence on the team in the latter part of last season wasn't significant and we still finished 8th.

I couldn't agree more, the scottish game is pish cause there's far too many managers that play the same way and sign the same old guff players that float between premier league clubs, kettlewell is a prime example, shit manager that's filling his Kilmarnock squad with rejects from around the league.lets be honest McInnes to hearts, kettlewell to Killie and Pressley to dundee is grim.the safe pair and of hands patter is another way of saying there a shit manager.no manager needs to have experience of the scottish league to go and get results against the likes of livingston and dundee.im all for us breaking the mould again and going with a foreign manager, who knows how it will work out for us but i for one would have been on a downer before the season started if we had appointed one of the usual suspects in the scottish game.
-
If we'd appointed Docherty, I wouldn't have renewed my season ticket...
-
Aye they probably think Pressley is a safe pair of hands that knows the Scottish game.
-
He kept them in the league didn’t he? And I’d be amazed if most Dundee fans are thrilled at having Steven Pressley as his replacement. And I’d be pretty astounded if many/any thought that Pressley was an upgrade on Tony Doc.
-
Ask Dundee if Tony was a safe pair of hands. The statement ...... knows the Scottish game and safe pair of hands is why Scottish Football is shite, boring and dying on its arse. Thought you had more imagination than that.
-
Of course it is. But I just have this nagging worry that J.B.A will find it difficult/impossible to address them at all. No disrespect meant to the guy, honestly, but this is when we could have done with the “safe pair of hands” ie. a Tony Docherty type that knows the Scottish game, knows the league we play in. All of this is of course my opinion and I may well be proved wrong but that’s how I see things at present.
-
As you point out the shortcomings in our team were there last season. Unreasonable to expect the manager to have addressed them all in under a month surely..?
-
I thought we were poor last night for what it’s worth but not going to lose sleep over it. If we are as bad in 3 weeks time then I may get worried
-
Just a noise.
-
yh i'll add him into Cm forgot about him when making it

Jimmy Sanderson, ex Radio Clyde anchor? I’m sure you’ve heard of him. I just reckon if he got a caller trying to one-up others or play the smart-arse then heard that they weren’t even at the game and indeed watched it on a dodgy stream from the other side of the Atlantic then his response would have been pretty similar to my satirical post above. As for Cheetos, I quite like them, orange or otherwise. Politics? Hate them. I prefer to simply discuss football on here Boss. 👍
-
Shankland is staying at hearts now and would be well out of our price range even when miller is sold.our forward line needs serious attention though, last night only highlighted the problems that we seen the whole of last season.
-
Say what now? The orange cheeto couldn't have said it any better.
-
I don’t think it necessarily is criticism of the new manager over last nights bounce game, more concerns being highlighted of some very glaring shortcomings in the team. The same shortcomings that were obvious throughout last season. It’s very difficult to judge how the team and the manager will fare going forward but there are clear causes for concern when looking at the squad, the team last night and the manager who is completely new and oblivious to Scottish football.
-
Losing to Sligo over 2 legs is worthy of criticism A new manager losing his 1st friendly in a bounce game to a very competent Dutch side? Cmon man
-
I don’t think the result matters, I’m sure it’s about the new gaffer seeing what he can improve and where the focus will be in building a squad that will be able to compete
-
For talking sake would you take Shankland (potentially 20+ goals) if we sold Miller for a good whack of cash or go with the new managers options? I don’t think it would make sense but if he was willing to come would it be of benefit or a detriment? I’m leaning towards no but this is also not a rumour
-
“Were you at the game caller”? ”Nah I wasn’t even in the country Jimmy” ”Okay…moving on”
-
I think I may be one of the perceived pant pissers as i recognise a couple of my comments lol I certainly didn’t mean to offend or annoy any of our precious forum members but I don’t think I was wrong? But it’s a pre season friendly I agree and tbh I’ve forgotten all about it today. As much as I didn’t see many positives last night, it was good to watch us play and have players getting game time against a good side and I did think highly of a couple of youngsters thrown on in the 2nd half. ultimately tho it’s a fans forum, loads of supporters have different views, no point in folk getting worked up about it.
