It is never as straightforward as that. The Helsinki night was magical, and on its own would easily be better than a result against Stenhousemuir. The thing is not only the opposition, but the competition. A reasonable opportunity of silverware has been passed up by doing a risk assessment and getting it wrong. You could easily spin the question around and say, if we had won today and went on to a Hampden final, or even won the competition, would you have preferred that or a win over Helsinki? The bottom line is that Motherwell lost today because there was a misjudgement of the quality of our fringe players and the quality and application of the opposition. We want to win as many as possible, not trade off one competition against another.

The managers interview is fair enough, nothing there i’d disagree with. I totally understand why he started with that team today so I can’t be too critical but there were bad calls during the match. on to Thursday now and hopefully a game we can enjoy and keep tight and avoid a bad defeat
-
What i will add also is beating helsinki probably has earned us more money than a good league cup run. I sm desperate to see us win a trophy but I would happily take a glamour freiburg tie ahead of a league cup semi defeat to sellik. That's just my view and of course we all have opinions. We move onto a rocking fir park on Thursday and get right behind AJ and the lads
-
Dont think anyone is scapegoing the young players, what ive seen so far is none are ready for permanent first team places, apart from wilson and ross who should be elsewhere.

I totally understand that frustration however I was much more raging last year when we lost to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup when Jens rotated the team because the only team that were left in it that we wouldn't have been favourites against were Celtic and even then I would have fancied us last season. We have basically got a full team out injured already and are having to play on a Thursday then Sunday so I totally get why we would rest players anyway never mind playing on that abomination of a pitch. Can you imagine how raging everyone would be if Said or Longelo ended up getting bad injuries that then puts them out of league games too. I think everyone is getting a bit bent out of shape because of the European game coming up and thinking we are resting players for that. There's guys there that need rested for the league games which like it or not are the main priority for a team the size of ours in the eyes of coaches and the board.
-
That's about right . Should have won it , held back some players who may have niggling injury only manager knows that . Should have had enough to beat them anyway Shouldn't ever expect to win every game or just turn up n win. Result could be blamed on players given a perfect opportunity to show what they could do and failed to take it. Can't win every game but Stennie ffs.

I agree but I’m a glass half empty 🤪 COYW

Part of my disappointment about today is in the way that we played. We allowed an industrial team, full of energy and determination to completely control the game. We had possession, but in the wrong areas, we hit a lot of pointless long balls, made no real chances and had every few attempts on goal in 120 mins. Because both Fadinger and Priestman were out, there was really no midfield play linking to the forwards. It was a very disjointed performance. It was clear from very early in the game that it wasn't going to work. Stenhousemuir's energy and desire to work for each other and their want to win, completely eclipsed the Motherwell effort today.
-
So are folk thinking better helsinki beat us and we had a full team today? Aye probably wont beat Freiburg but we don't get big European nights often so give me that any day. Today was poor, we all know that but jeez its first defeat of season
-
We probably wouldn’t but we would stand a damn site better chance than doing anything of note in Europe. This is the competition where we reached the semi finals in the last two seasons, taking big crowds to Hampden as a result. Who knows? Had we not fucked up royally against St.Mirren then it would have been us having a crack at an out of sorts Celtic led by Wilfred Nancy. If you’re still in it you can still win it but we yet again decide to act like Man City or Liverpool in the cup when we have nowhere near the squad depth and quality to do so.
-
Hearts hibs and Celtic through and rangers winning so unlikely we would have got further on this form.
-
Well done to Stenny we were not good enough and too many passengers in the team today.

I am mainly glass half-full guy. Think some of the reaction a bit OTT. no one is denying its a bad result but that starting line up was still strong. Longelo missed a few games early in so was maybe fatigued to start this one. In midfield Hodge started and up front we had almost strongest line-up. I would expect AJ to be raging with that performance but I understand the changes. Transfer window shuts in a few weeks so hopefully get a few in and I think we will be fine.
-
Surely there’s not two of them 🤦♂️
-
There is just as much chance of us winning the ECL as there is the league cup 🤣 I appreciate the game is just finished but some of the overreaction here today is a bit mad given the last 12 months we have had!
-
Not normally one to go on a mad incoherent rant, but I'm ready for one right now. As other's have already said, a domestic cup is the best chance of silverware/finals for teams like us. To treat it like that is a terrible piece of management. We have a tie coming up in Europe, yes, but seriously, we're not going to beat Freiburg over two legs, no matter how rusty they are. Fuckin' raging right now !
-
Not an ideal result, but the harsh truth is we're playing games on a lot of fronts at the moment with a fairly small squad available to us. If the manager has to rank the League Cup, League, and European football in order of priority, I know which I would have at the bottom of the list. Europe and the league are more important at the moment. Just how it is.
-
We fluked a result there last season so I'm not hugely surprised. It's a bad pitch and not an inspiring place to play. Scape goating young players is totally out of order, we weren't good enough as a team and Stenhousemuir were just better than us. If we know anything about football coming off a European match is always dangerous and that's something you just have to deal with if we are in Europe. We were poor against Falkirk as well. You have to believe in the system and there is no point going ape shit at the first set back, that's the 'old' Motherwell coming out there.
-
I dont think we would have won the league cup either had we stayed in. We're not going to get through in Europe either I'd like to add but if you had offered we the win against Helsinki or this game I'd have taken the Helsinki win.
-
I think that is a bit unfair. It is far too early to make a judgement on Booth. The manager seems to rate him, but he needs to bulk up and mature. He needs a loan spell. It is also early to assess Vogt. I agree that his performances to date have been largely, at best, anonymous or worse. He needs to do much more, but he is away from home, trying to settle into a new team, a new style and a higher standard of football. I'll give him a bit more time. Ross, doesn't look like he'll make it, and Wilson has had about 100 games over the years, it looks like his chance has gone.
-
Again, agree 100% with this. Raging.
-
100% this. Absolutely fucking fuming at that. The Freiburg tie is nigh-on unwinnable. We have sacrificed a potential cup run, months of anticipation etc. Out with a whimper.
