I know we won't have much chance of going through, but we don't try every year to qualify for Europe so we can get papped out by some team in Israel or Kazakhstan or wherever, do we?

Surely if we're going to get eliminated we'd rather play a team that we at least recognise? Sparta Prague have a decent European calibre, having beaten Rangers and also hammered Celtic a few times.

I'd rather we played teams like Dortmund, Nancy, Steaua Bucharest, Panathinaikos and Prague than some no-name outfit from a corner of the world it's near impossible to get to. Both of the sides we can get provide a fairly easy journey for fans to attend the away game, which is what it's all about. That's where the memories are made.

    Mypa 47 anyone lol

Likewise for me, if I remember correctly Dortmund went all the way to the semi final that year and we had the best result of all the teams that  played in the wesfalen stadium that year in the UEFA cup. IF rab Shannon ever plays again he still has a uefa ban to serve for getting  sent off at Fir park :D

Then they poach paul Lambert n go on n win champions league 2 years later

    Agreed  - tough gig.

In truth I suspect most Scottish Teams will get pumped out the competition by what's deemed lesser Euro Teams.

From all our trips to Europe the tie against Dortmund sticks in my mind as one of the performances to be proud of.

Hopefully (assuming we make it to the next round) we can re-kindle some of that pride

Tommy coynes miss still haunts me lol..for atmosphere nancy was something else,we were applauded out the ground by the home fans, great times t b a well fan

I'm aware that UEFA say the higher seed has priority. Not sure if that means they get the choice, or that they just play on the allocated dates.

Also, Ryanair flights to Prague for the 2nd leg dates are currently much cheaper than for the 1st leg dates.

Just keep ur eye on that price..i think they have a guy monitoring european fixtures n just bump the price up lol

Slavia Prague also drawn at home potentially on the same night which won’t happen. If that’s the case, one game will need to move.

Thanks for the update, was jumping the gun a little

We do have another tie t take care of in the meantime lol,we r Motherwell after all

Tidy finish from Efford on his weaker foot, not quite the sclaff at the keeper that somehow rolled over the line as was made out to be.

Takes alot of skill t nutmeg the keeper from that range wi pace,

We have had a bid for the first choice striker then he disappears out the squad with a 'knock'. We have all seen this movie before.

As for SOD I'll be very surprised if he captains us again.

You are correct about the squad being weaker. We need two starting quality attackers even if Van Veen doesn't go back to Holland.

"Knock"why r we playing contact football days b4 we kick off our season unless it was in austria

  8. 3-5-2 is a must this season 4-3-3 didnt work(how can i say that when we've finished 5th n qualified for europe)but by god we were awful t watch

Mcginn mugabe n lamie(not seen enough of mcginn)but imo thats our 3 best defenders for that set up

A fit maguire, slattery and deano would b a strong central 3 wi maguire sitting deeper

Wingbacks,SOD as we dont have anyone else, the left side is a bit of a headache, mcginley and carrol imo are better than what they've shown, both were left exposed bcos of the narrow 3 in midfield

KVV is a no brainer, hes got everything you'd want in a striker, who do u partner him with, shields who has the pace, tierney who has the skill the new guy morris who has the experience and does have a lovely left foot(saw his video on u tube)and has partnered KVV previously, efford, who hasnt settled in yet

Only going on what we have as dont know enough about the new guys apart from mcginn who is better than what we have

    Who'd b a manager,good luck GA

Probably like others, it's a bit of a meh signing for me.
For me, like most, we are still 3 players short. A left back, centre half and a central striker.

I would have also liked to see us bringing in another central midfielder but it seems like the chances of that are slim to none.

So far, we are looking at

    ------------------Kelly

    ----Mcginn-----Solholm---Mugabe------

    O'Donnell-----------------------------?

    ----------------Maguire

    ---------Slattery-----Spittal-------

    ------Van Veen------Woolery

It's a serviceable team - probably bottom six -  but missing quality and someone to drag us up the pitch.

    Subs:

    Fox

    Ojala

    Lamie

    Johnston

    Goss

    Carroll

    McGinley

    Tierney

    Efford

    Shields

    Morris

I would still like to see us get shot of Goss, Carroll, McGinley & Efford but as they say, it's the hope that kills you. I just can't help but feeling we would get so much more value of 2 quality salaries rather than these 4 imposters.

Mugabe in b4 lamie in that position..ive heard it all now

Not seen the team but KVV being captain would suggest that Kelly was also not playing.

Maybe the players that were late back for pre season due to international duty SOD, Kelly and Tierney were not considered

Good shout, never considered that, but having KVV as captain wouldnt b such a bad idea

Really worrying the lack of signings for the start of the season, our defence was horrendous last season, anyone could score against us, so to only bring in a right back when we have two in SOD and Max Johnstone is baffling, left side has been very week all last year, another forward is a must, and for those who want to defend Connor Shields and Efford did you go to games last season, if you did then no discussion

Whats baffling is uve mentioned max johnstone,he's not yet 20 and been on loan for a season to QoS,how can u see him as competition to sod

Is the right back you're refering to paul mcginn?,an experienced international player who played on the right of a back 3 for hibs that can also play RB,its a bit of a contradiction when u moan about us leaking goals and we go and sign an international defender

There was also a game, I think the year before this, where we beat Aberdeen 2-1 at FP. Paul lambert scored with a good finish after a nice move, then Coyne and Davies combined for a clever free kick routine, where the latter passed to TC down the outside of the wall, and he finished under the keeper from a tight angle. Not a hugely important game, but I had it taped off sportscene, and could see myself in the crowd, so it stuck with me. The footage isn't online, which is a shame.

I remember that goal..TC faked injury whilst hobbling into the box then made a remarkable recovery t pounce

I’m with spudmfc / Tierney is a cracking talent and be a very decent no10.

also agree that shields needs some slack and be good as a forward pair .

what was obvious last year and is still obvious is ditch the front 3 rotation . Appreciate it makes as narrow but also create  space for wingbacks to get forward .

WINGBACKS????,...SOD's best games last year were for scotland,im led t believe mcginn played right in a back 3 for hibs so that might free up the option of a flexible 5 in midfield, does put a question mark on the left side though, can rarely remember our fullbacks getting t the byline n putting crosses in bcos of the rigid system GA deployed

  14. I hear alot of talk abour more forwards...we have Tierney n efford, granted the jury is out on efford, but remember where they've come from and when, moving mid season n trying t get up to speed at a higher level than where they played previously must b tough.a full pre season behind them n this year we may see the best of them,me personally i like tierney alot,id play him in a 10 role, was far too big a gap between our strikers n midfield n ross played that role great when he came on against hearts in 2nd last game when we were getting over run in the middle of the park,i dont know if GA can accommodate that in his system that he likes/uses,it wouldnt take too much tinkering with wot we have cos t b fair we were pretty gash  last year n i dont think it was mainly down t the players,i think the system was all wrong

So given that we should be signing players of the same level, or better than Hibs would deem as good enough for them right ? To do that we would need to be offering the same wages or better right? How do we do that ?

I would rather you did not just keep everything to two throw away lines and actually came up with a detailed explanation of your thought processes. You want a team of better quality players, how do we fund that ? Do we start building up debt again ? Do we look at a smaller squad ? Do we cut back in other areas such as youth and put that money into the first team budget ? What other ideas do you have ?

It’s easy to just keep throwing insults around every time someone questions your posts, I could do the same but it achieves nothing. I’m actually genuinely interested in your thoughts.

He was good enough for hibs 30 times last year and did he not extend his contract another year, mibee this new guy just doesnt fancy him,or mibee mcginn doesnt fancy new manager,i think its decent bit of business

agreed - S'OD should have been told to enjoy his hols. he gave his all during last years tourney - came back fecked as no rest/no pre season.    He needs a proper break.

I think hes done as a Scotland RB way down the pecking order now, even hickey,a left back getting in in front of him
