  1. In a similar vein, young member of extended family has caught the bug and it's largely down to the work of the Bois.

Given the kid had a strong Earl Haig background previously, surprised when I clocked him leaving the Cooper Stand post our latest defeat of the eventual tainted league winners and did a little digging. "Spent most of the match when he wasn't cheering videoing that lot at the far end of that stand" I was told. Had him join us for Ross County in the penultimate match...

    Hooked

    Why 'tainted' league winners?

  2. Just in, enjoyable day, nice stadium although pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

Walked from town centre in blazing heat, wish had got a taxi!

Game was pretty tame stuff to be honest, we had better of the 1st half they probably shaded the 2nd.

Good practise for the boys if we draw a team from somewhere hot in the Europa.

  3. Poor journalism from the Evening Times

No quote from McCall even mentioning McManus, all he says is "We are also looking to add defensively and we have options."

Stu: I'll take the Mick to land ex-Celt

MOTHERWELL are hoping to make former Scotland and Celtic captain Stephen McManus their fifth summer signing.

Stephen McManus is in demand having left Middlesbrough The 30-year-old wants to return to Scotland for family reasons having come to the end of his contract at Middlesbrough. He has been training with the Fir Park club since their return to pre-season.

Well gaffer Stuart McCall says he needs to make up to three more signings before Well begin their campaign on Thursday, August 4, with a Europa League qualifier.

However, the Steelmen face competition for the big defender from Hibs and Dundee United, but McCall is prepared to make McManus one of the club's higher earners to secure his signature.

McCall said: "I would say we need to make three more signings. We got Gunnar Nielsen last week and we probably need another three.

"However, my priority is width. We have lost Henrik Ojamaa and Chris Humphrey and lost Jamie Murphy in January.

"That has robbed us of a lot of width and that is probably the main thing.

"We are also looking to add defensively and we have options."

McManus could also be swayed to sign for his hometown team by the retention of close mate James McFadden.

On the subject of the former Scotland talisman, McCall said he had not given up hope of keeping Faddy at Fir Park.

The Well gaffer said: "James has not come back and said no to us so we are still hopeful.

"But another option for us is a couple of loan deals, either from the English Premiership or Championship.

"We had Fraser Kerr on loan from Birmingham last season and we ended up signing him.

"So these types of deals can be very fruitful and are an option for us."

Well headed to Spain for a week's training on the back of a 3-1 closed door defeat by Morton, at Cappielow, on Saturday.

McCall has no doubt about the value of getting away from it all.

The Motherwell manager said: "The opportunity to get away is of great value as it allows you to step up the intensity of your build-up.

"It was good to get the closed-door game with Morton under our belts.

"But now we will step things up in terms of fitness and tactics.

Going away last summer proved very fruitful so I have no doubt it will lay the foundations again.

"The other aspect is we have brought in three new lads to the club in Paul Lawson and Iain Vigurs and now Gunnar Neilsen and it will allow them to get to know their team-mates.

"But I am happy with the lads' professionalism over the summer."

  4. From Evening Times.

Can't say I know much about him, but hopefully he'll be next on the list of keepers who excel at Fir Park.

Gunnar deal close for Well boss Stu

STUART McCALL has revealed he hopes to complete the signing of Faroese international goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen within the next 24 hours.

The 26-year-old is a free agent after leaving Danish club Silkeborg IF and McCall is hopeful he will be able to unveil the former Blackburn Rovers keeper in time to allow him to join Well in the departures lounge for their Spanish training camp on Monday.

It will be Nielsen's second spell at Fir Park following a five month loan spell, from August 2008 to December 2008, when he returned to Ewood Park.

The Steelmen gaffer said: "Following Darren Randolph's departure for Birmingham we have been keen to get an experienced top quality goalkeeper in and I believe Gunnar Nielsen ticks all these boxes.

"I am very hopeful that we will be able to sign him up within the next 24 hours and that hopefully he can join us in Spain.

"But Gunnar will face a fight for the gloves with Lee Hollis and I am sure they will both benefit from the competition for the No.1 slot."

Meanwhile, Motherwell will take on Doncaster Rovers in a pre-season friendly at the Keepmoat Stadium, on Saturday, July 13, in a 3pm kick-off.

  5. This is from the official website on 20/05/2013.

The following players have been / will be offered extended terms with the club:

    • Tom Hateley
    • Chris Humphrey
    • Michael Higdon
    • Fraser Kerr
    • James McFadden

Would be surprised if the club haven't put some kind of figures to him by now.

  6. Doncaster happening then?

From Kenny Black's interview in the Wishaw Press.

"After the trip to Spain we have Doncaster away and Newcastle at home which is one to relish and we will also look to arrange more friendlies for the first team and under-20s before the season starts."
  7. I like the idea of a Hutchinson / McManus partnership, could see that working well.

Of course that would mean keeping hold of Hutchy!

Still remember a horrendous tackle McManus made, think it was on his Celtic debut against us, might've been 1st game of the season.

Should've been a straight red & he didn't even get a yellow if I remember correctly!

Sure I'll forgive him if he were to come in & do the business for us though.

  8. SSN: Sky Sources - Tom Hateley & Michael Higdon to reject new contract offers at Motherwell.

Knew big Higgy was away but thought Hateley might've still been with us next season.

If true at least we know where we stand & can get on with finding replacements.

  9. Alright guys,

This is no rumour just fact but Motherwell have lined up Lee Miller to replace higdon when/if he decides to leave

Enquiry has been made and McCall will discuss higdon/miller issue when he returns from his break

And your source for this fact is?
