League Cup Semi Motherwell v St Mirren 1/11/2025
joewarkfanclub replied to grizzlyg's topic in Club Chat
I know its what happens on the day that counts, and I do expect this to be a very close game. However, St Mirren have only scored 8 goals this season (2 of them last night) which is half our number. They have conceded 12. 1 less than us. Statistically, there are reasons to feel positive going into the game. It will be interesting to see what Robinson does after him saying they gave us "too much respect" in Paisley. If they press high, I think we can get a lot of joy on the counter. If they sit off, then they could be a lot more difficult to break down. -
He is a minimum 7/10 every week. Mr Consistency.

Didnt think he appeared to be running fine at any point last night. Thats the poorest Ive seen him. To be fair, their centre half was an absolute monster, so wasnt a particularly fair fight. But Hendry did much better against him.
-
As someone who has defended Stama on here quite considerably, I felt the drop off after Hendry went off was quite significant. Not sure what was wrong with Stama tonight, but he was second to every ball and ended up going off injured. Beginning to suspect he is made of glass......

I actually thought Cookie had a good game, better than Maswanhise first half certainly. But TJ got his goal and put a shift in second half despite clearly having been crocked scoring.
-
Slide tackle to block a shot. Got up holding his thigh. Hopefully just a precaution. Wasnt mentioned in post match interviews.

Sorry, but it really isnt a difficult choice tonight. Slattery, Fadinger, RCC, Koutroumbis all had good games, but Elliot Watt was an absolute stand out tonight. One of the most complete midfield performances Ive seen from a Motherwell player in a long time and a fantastic goal to put the icing on the cake.
-
Thoroughly enjoyed that tonight for a a number of reasons. Firstly we absolutely dominated the first half with 72% possession of the ball having made 5 (five) changes to the starting line up. United had 1 shot on target in 45 minutes and that was the free kick which Ward dealt with comfortably. Second half we coped well with Goodwin going man for man to try and close us down and still managed to find ways around them. We did cough up a few chances, but we made far more ourselves proving that we can actually be a very effective counter attacking team if we need to be. We scored 2 fantastic goals, kept a clean sheet and finished strongly despite having made 5 substitutions. All in all, a very good nights work and 3 points to keep the momentum going into Saturday. Fingers crossed the injuries aren't serious and we have as strong a starting 11 and bench as we had tonight.

No, but he would be a very decent Slattery replacement when he inevitably moves on either in January or in the summer.....

League Cup Semi Motherwell v St Mirren 1/11/2025

Absolutely no assumptions being made here. But the point was made that we havent been winning finals since 1991 because we always come up against one of the ugly sisters and other teams that have won trophies in that time by luckily avoiding them. Just pointing out there has been an outlier....... -

Firstly, thanks for your prediction. I feel much more relaxed about the game now! Secondly, are you sure? Even if its those beastly Celtic fans that will be celebrating a victory? Surely you would rather St Mirren fans were cheering than the worst fans in Scotland. -
Am I mis-remembering, or was the "professional foul" not punishable by a red card back in the day (70's). And if so, why did it change? I have vague recollections of Motherwell players being hauled down on the half way line and red cards being shown. Could have been a pre cursor to the last man / clear goalscoring opportunity rule, but I kinda feel that it was a thing.......
-
I guess our conversion rate is better than we thought then?

Prognosis was due back January......

I think the issue with Welsh is that he is no longer a young player and unlikely to develop into a player that will be dependable for them in Europe, or sold on for a fee. That being the case, they need to clear some space for the next project. Welsh has been impressive for us since he arrived and is clearly better than anything else we had, whether there will be a queue of bigger clubs lining up for him when his Celtic contract expires, Im not so sure. Id be more than happy for us to get him on a contract though.
-
I hear you buddy, but you're still going on Wednesday though, right?
-
It also took Longelo, Said and Maswanhise out the game as it was nigh impossible to dribble on effectively. Given that they are our "chaos agents" thats a big part of our game nullified before we start.
-
I think the VAR technology can provide the angles to draw the lines. But we paid for the cheap version with less cameras which, by definition will be less accurate. It therefore stands to reason that, with very tight decisions like today's, its hard to have confidence in its accuracy. So although it isnt a subjective thing, the "clear and obvious" is still a fair shout......
-
The win today should take a bit of the pressure off and being back on the grass should allow us to be a bit more free flowing again. Hopefully Longelo is ok, although I would be just as happy to rest him for the semi final if required. Everyone else should be fitter and sharper as a result of todays run out. Im not convinced United are all they are cracked up to be. Decent, yes. Beatable, certainly. Id take a draw, but 3 points would be magnificent for the teams confidence ahead of Saturday.
-
Slim pickings today. Some very average perfmances. Watt and Fadinger gave the ball away a lot more than usual. JT was anonymous and Longelo looked like he had the wrong boots on. For me Just was the stand out player. Not everything was coming off this week, but he kept plugging away trying to open the door, was very unfortunate with the 2 disallowed goals, so really nice that he got a deserved winner!
-
Probably the poorest we have played all season, so more than a bit ironic to get the 3 points. I thought the pitch played a huge part. Despite being a brand new surface, if you dont water it, its gonna play slow and sticky. Clearly a deliberate ploy from Livvy to disrupt our rythmn, and it worked. Too many of our key players failed to cope with it and despite still being the better team, we werent anywhere near as effective as usual. Good to see Slattery back and his pass to Just for the winner is sublime. Thought Walsh was very inconsistent with his decisions and let Livvy away with repeated fouling and feigning injury to disrupt the game, and the 2 offside goals are very marginal, particularly the first one, where the VAR camera angle is beyond a joke. Big win for us. Avoid defeat on Wednesday (or even better win) and we can go into the semi final with a lot of confidence.

Strong looking starting 11 and a very strong looking bench Will today be the day?
