Is it time clubs amalgamated to become a big enough challenge to the Old Firm, especially in the West of Scotland

Why not merge the Old Firm together and then the rest of us only have one team to challenge?

  2. Related to that. The peak average was the 98/99 season, the game at Fir Park vs United reports a crowd of 11k+ which seems disproportionately high compared to other attendances vs United around then.

I was definitely at the game but can't remember why the crowd was so big. Did 11k turn up just to see McClair?

That game was a Sunday night with kick off at back of 6pm. I think it was part of a pilot to give Sky something to make "Super Sunday" last a little longer. As the match was on Sky, I'm sure Boyle either dropped the prices or used one of his season ticket holders can bring 2 friends scheme to boost the crowd. Bear in mind this was also shortly after Boyle acquired the club, made a lot of promises and backed some of them up with a large number of signings during the summer.

  3.

No chance. They have one stand, which holds just short of 2000.

Anyone who wants to go, will get in.

I went to the old ground for the League Cup tie back in 1998, but I haven't been to the new ground. What's the transport links? Any nearby train stations?

Nearest train station is Markinch in Glenrothes which is about 10-15 minutes away by car.

  4. Worrying with just a few days before our first league game we seem prepared to be going with our second choice keeper. Are we waiting to pick up a loan from England at the end of the transfer window. Surely weve got some irons in the fire and not all our eggs in one basket.

I would only be worried if we were thinking of going through the entire season with someone thought to be 2nd choice. All the noises coming out of Fir Park is that we are actively trying to recruit a new keeper (see managers recent interviews and recent podcast with Flow who mentions we've several irons in the fire). Whilst using Dan is far from ideal if he isn't seen as immediate first choice, the time for worrying was during the play offs and not to dampen the enthusiasm of getting back to business in a new season.

  5. At that time Garry oconnor was a better prospect than David clarkson that was the point I was making

O'Connor is a couple of years older than Clarkson and was an established player when Clarky was a prospect. If you look at Seib's comment he said he was one of the most exciting talents - at no point did he claim him to be better than anyone.

  6. Definitely think adding quality to the midfield is key. It's been one of our main failings in the last 2 seasons and I think we have finally reached the point where we can't rely on Lasley every week. We also need to play a midfield three on a more regular basis.

There should be scope with Vigurs, Lawson and Carswell all leaving.

My shopping list would be Skippy, Laing, keeper, midfielder, 2 strikers, back up centre half and ideally a right back.

We don't need a right back. Josh Law is as steady right back with Reid and Watt to cover.

  7. Also for a Club like Motherwell the chances are any income from alcohol sales would be outweighed by the increases in the costs. Currently very few Well matches require a Police presence inside the ground, but do you think that would stil be the case if alcohol was on sale?

What extra cost? How many police do you see in pubs so why should they need to be at a football stadium just cause they sell drink? The clubs already hire stewards who require to be licenced and there are already stewards who look after pie stalls. These same stewards go and work in pubs and nightclubs after a shift at football so are already used to dealing with inebriated supporters. At most, an extra couple of stewards would be required, not a return of large police presence.

  8. You must have a short memory, or time is a great healer Stevie Woods was fucking horrendous, never forgive him for some of his cock ups especially the one against Rangers last game of the season at FP when he fucked up and gave the ball to Gordon Dury to score.

Maybe he didn't seem as bad as he had some decent defenders around him. Unlike Dan who has been hung out to dry by our defense all season.

Pretty sure that wasn't the last game of the season. If my memory serves me correct that was a Scottish Cup tie which Durie equalised to send the tie to a replay which we lost. Something also comes into my head that this was Andy Watsons game in charge after McLeish left us.

Don't think Woods was that bad a keeper, again I think he was unfortunate in that we had been spoiled with Seib for a bit. The Twardzik comments on stature and shot-stopping ability are similar to comments from Man Utd fans about De Gea. I'm not saying Twardzik can be as good as De Gea but it shows that fan opinion can quickly change once a keeper gains some confidence in his own ability and in his defence and to a certain extent is part of a winning team.

  9. Seems the best of both worlds. We essentially get a large backing from a well fan but also keep majority control with the fans and not 1 'owner'. It also does not stop us in the future from looking at external resource again.

As I have said before - the future financing/budget plans are of utmost importance. However, I see no greater risk in going with the WS as opposed to 'the consortium' on that front.

From what I have heard he is not a football supporter but has family who are Well fans.

As for the stewarding....why was the whole south stand opened up for 22 fans..........surely they should have been in the main stand

The South Stand was ready to accommodate Well fans should the East/Cooper stand sell out. It was nothing to do with away fans having to be in a separate stand.

    Page Missing Mystery!

Well, we tried. We really did try. But we just cannot find the page that you were looking for. It's a real shame but we hope you decide to look at a different page on the Express while we try to figure out where it's got to. You could always use the search box at the top of the site and try again. Or maybe you'd like to see something from these sections instead?

  12. I assume you mean in the top six, as opposed to sixth, 'cause I got news for you - we're 2nd equal (or 3rd if you want to be pedantic)

Why only the top 6, are the bottom six undeserving of assistance?, or do they cease to have overheads after the split. If true that is utterly criminal and discriminatory

    That true Kmcalpin?

Because the minimum place that each team can finish in the top 6 is 6th. In terms of cashflow and planning for next season, the advance payment could be vital to some teams.

  13. The County fan who collapsed outside the Cooper came to with the help of an ambulance shortly after the game started and the last I seen of him, he and his mate were walkin towards turnstyles. Have no idea if he got in but I did see his mate outside the exit doors of the POD at the end of the game

  14. Absolutely. The argument that changing the manager doesn't or won't help is a poor one and in our case our recent managerial changes fully back that up.

We ditched Malpas after it was clear he could take us no further after a shocking end to the season and replaced him with McGhee. Two years later McGhee left after making it abundantly clear that he wanted to move on instead of sticking around and rebuild the squad so we brought in Gannon who did just that. After things started to 'happen' off the park with him we replaced him with Brown who steadied the ship...then a year later he moved on and in came McCall who, despite his faults, guided us to a cup final, a 3rd placed finish and then a 2nd placed finish. He knew he would have to rebuild the squad over the summer if he stayed with us and I'm afraid that the players he had brought in aren't good enough because we have an unbalanced midfield and zero pace and are thus an uninspiring side going nowhere and I believe that McCall has done as much as he can with us.

In answer to the question of who should be brought in though, I say....Paul Hartley.

There is no guarantee that changing manager will help though so the argument is perfectly sound. We are in the same position Aberdeen were in with Jimmy Calderwood where they were acheiving decent league results (including getting through to Europa League) and yet he lost his job over a couple of poor cup results. Since then their league position slumped and they still got knocked out of the Cup early and its only in the last few seasons that they have started to become a credible threat in the league again.

As for your suggestion of Paul Hartley, our board when we do look for a manager will seek someone with a good knowledge of English leagues (lower leagues in particular) as that is a market which has continued to prove fruitful for us in the past. I think this will knock suggestions like Hartley, Shiels or any of the other names commonly banded about in Scottish Football on the head. Were we to change manager, I think we could possibly look for someone like Owen Coyle who will have to work hard to rebuild his career given the allegations of unrest at Wigan and also meets the criteria of decent knowledge of english leagues.

  15. I see a few folk have mentioned the Cup game versus Livi earlier this season as a marker for the support we'll take. I think many are forgetting that its the League Cup and we normally have a larger crowd for Scottish Cup games especially given the Scottish Cup is generally played on a Saturday and is probably the more romantic of the 2. If the prices for the game are the same as Saturdays game v Devronvale (Tenner and a Fiver) I think we could have a decent support.

Whilst Cliftonhill might indeed be a shitehole, at least it has a character and history that the Broomfields, St Mirren Parks and Almondvales don't.
