I don't know that we're any worse than most Ian. I've just been reading fan fora for St Johnstone and Dundee United this morning and the level of venom and vitriol amongst sections of their supports is frightening.

I’d agree with that.  I think fan sites like this are great but they do afford fans the opportunity to have a rant and vent their feelings almost instantaneously either during or after games when their emotions are running high - not always a good time to be commenting on anything.

I can remember after a game, whether we’d won or lost, played well or badly the only outlet for comment was in the pub afterwards with your mates.

Just back in from the game in all honesty it was dreadful,  Livi had no intention of going forward from the 1st whistle,  we had lots of the ball but we are feckin toothless up front we carry no threat at all. That said we got into good positions on a few occasions and probably just shaded the game so a deserved win.

We can't rely on dubious penalties to win games we need to sign a goalscorer ASAP , the sending off forced Livi To come out more and we are terrible at seeing  games out we defend too deep and let them get into areas of the park they should be nowhere near that late in a game.

We are moving in the right direction but we need to create and take more chances up front to keep the momentum going , which for me will  be difficult with the current players as I said we need a goalscorer to back up KVV.

So a dreadful game football wise but a fantastic result, another 3 points and 3rd place in hhe league, so has to be a good day at the office onwards and upwards.

Good post Spider.  I thought out of the midfield that started the game young Cornelius was unfortunate to be subbed as he was the only one that got forward in the first half.  Lamie’s passing was lamentable but in his defence he was having to be play-maker much of the time as Goss and Slattery went missing.

Let's be honest the match was a complete snoozefest, I don't think either goalkeeper actually had a save to make out with the penalty.

Still it was important we took points from the easier fixtures at the start of the season..

However, we may have changed manager, formation and style but our lack of creativity in open play is still there for all too see.

Agreed.  Some are saying we need another striker (and maybe we do) but if we aren’t creating chances it won’t matter how many strikers we have.  I felt for KVV today as he again battled manfully up front on nothing but scraps.

Would like to see Efford kept on, there’s a player in there somewhere. This attacking football we are playing all of a sudden will suit him. Not necessarily as a starter, but to come off the bench and run at tiring full backs for the last 30 minutes.

I’m with you on this. The one thing Efford has is pace and that will always worry defenders. If he could just add an end product he’d be a really good asset.

I'll settle to be above 9th and show some steady progress in terms of bringing through youngsters and showing some form of evolving towards playing football.

Given the budgets of the old firm, Edinburgh clubs, Hibs, Utd it's reasonable to expect them to be above us.

I'm hoping for the longer term plan that sees us bring through youngsters, get more fans back in the stadium and improve the quality of play over time.

Expect this season to be very up and down, enjoy the ups when we get them.

    Good common sense post.

  6. Despite Livi’s poor record at Fir Park - P17  L10  W4  D3 - they will still be a hard nut to crack.

I believe this game will provide a truer yardstick for us as they are one of the sides I consider to be in our peer group in the league.

Hoping for a good positive performance and hopefully a win.

I disagree, a club of our size should be aspiring to finish in the top six. We should be competing with Dundee Utd, Aberdeen and Hibs for a European spot this season, and it saddens me to think our ambitions are “anything above relegation is a bonus”, should that be what the club’s goals are.

The second half vs St Johnstone and the Aberdeen game show we CAN play, we are a good team with some good footballers. Let’s set some lofty but achievable targets, we are more than capable.

A totally over the top reaction to one good performance and result.  We’ve just appointed a rookie manager who has fallen heir to a largely poor group of players from the last management regime.

Prior to Saturday, we were second best over 120 minutes against an Irish League team; very lucky to get 3 points at St. Mirren; no more than an average in the second half against St. Johnstone and despite the result and performance against Aberdeen, it was still clear that all of our old shortcomings are still there.

Putting such totally unrealistic expectations on our new manager whilst he is in the foothills of his managerial career is just plain stupid.

  8. Fans shouldn’t get too carried away. It’s just one game and as the old adage says, one swallow does not a summer make.

For me, although the win was great and very welcome I was more interested in how we set up and played because this is a truer indicator of future performances and in this respect it was highly encouraging.  However, given the turmoil over the past 9 months or so I would be more than happy if we retained our top flight status this season and laid a foundation for the future. Anything else would be a bonus.

  9. I know it’s been suggested previously and criticised but I do think it could be worth taking Scott Allen onboard.  I know he has had issues which are well-documented but he is 30 now and seems to have wised-up and he is quite a classy player on his day. We could offer him an initial 1-year deal with caveats built-in to protect the club with the possibility of an additional 1-year if things go well.

After reflecting on it, I have come to a single point - sack the board.

Hammell is a club legend and has been a great servant to the club, without question.

He speaks well and am sure will give it his all but this must be the laziest and panicked decision we could have made.

It's a decision that reeks of self-preservation of a group of largely older accountants that make up our board who have come under a fair bit of stick themselves for allowing Alexander to remain in place for so long and are now leaving Hammell out to dry, fully aware that being a Hall of Fame legend that he will get a bit of a longer leash from a support which has been pretty venomous of late.

    McMahon's statement is absolutely laughable.

"An integrated club" - drivel. How the club is run shouldn't be down to the manager, it should be from the board. I posted way back when that we should have a director of football in place or something equivalent rather than being at the whims of individual managers. It was clear that we fully bought in Alexander's particular brand of eye bleeding shite and Mcmahon's statement proves it - we have completely lost control within our management. The identity of the club should never be down to the manager, the manager should be there to execute, tweak and optimise - that's why companies have managers, directors and CEO and boards. In no other business model (or many clubs these days) would a manager decide the direction of the club.

With the greatest respect to Hammell, how can it be possible for him to run what McMahon states to be the biggest department in the club as the academy and then for him to surprise you in the interview? Surely if the guy has been there for 5 years in that role and 20 odd before that as a player then you would have a very solid idea of his beliefs and you could have given him the role either prior to Alexander or wouldn't have bothered with the interviews if you were so impressed.

I hope Hammell succeeds, I really do but he was not what we needed.

We needed new ideas, a change in structure and fresh faces in the squad.

As a club, Motherwell have asked the support to back the club again and again which they have. Record Season Ticket Sales, jersey sales, well society and all the rest but the support are having the wool pulled over their eyes by a board and CEO who's time is up.

    Great post mate.

after watching dundee utd last night, if we dont finish above them , we deserve to be relegated....assuming we get 2 or 3 new faces in

They were beyond lamentable, even with tony watt, mcgrath  steven fletcher....ok players at a certain level , but honestly bang average.

I assume your having a laugh but if not then you need to keep out of the sun.

Personally I’m of the belief everyone can learn from their mistakes, otherwise what’s the point.

“The players will learn from this.”  “We will learn from this.”  “The players must learn from this.” “We will use this as a learning experience.” etc. etc. ad nauseam.

Phrases straight from the book of football manager double-talk and drivel that are continually trotted out when teams lose.  What a load of tripe.  Players at a certain level such as ours, never learn anything and they just continue to repeat the same mistakes time after time.

As Bill Shankly once said “Football is a terribly simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass.”

He also said a football team is like a piano - you need 8 men to carry it and 3 who can play the damn thing.

Well at present all we have are piano carriers. Stevie needs to try somehow to get us 3 players.  Good luck Stevie.

  13. Our chairman has been quoted today as saying:

“He inspired us with not only his short-term plans to reshape the squad and adapt the style, but his medium to long-term vision around a fully integrated club and we felt this matched how we see the future of the club.”

Exactly wtf does “fully integrated club”mean?! :dontknow:

In theory, Las would have been a better choice  After all, he applied twice before and was rejected on the grounds of bit having enough experience. Unfortunately, Las at 'Well seems like another thing Alexander fucked up.

That’s a very good point that’s been overlooked.  I always thought Lasley became assistant to Robinson with an eye to the future.  However Alexander’s arrival put the kibosh on that.  So having opted not to appoint from within on the basis of lack of experience why are we now backtracking?

When you fire someone you should have a plan to bring in a replacement.  I don't think we did and the club has meekly folded to the idiotic knee jerk roasters in our support.

Alexander wasn’t fired - he left by mutual consent.  I think it’s plain the club were surprised at this because they gave no indication they weren’t satisfied with his performance and why would they?  With a top 6 finish and qualification for European football they were probably highly chuffed.  They had only recently extended his contract, allowed him to cull the squad and bring in 3 new players.  So why would they need a plan to bring in a replacement.

I believe Alexander “engineered” his exit from the club in an attempt to protect his own image as evidenced by his spin in the media about having preserved the club’s top league status, gotten us into the top 6 and qualified for European football.  In his mind it allowed him to leave with nothing but plusses on his CV for his next job.

As for the appointment of Stevie Hammell - he was a fantastic player for us and a terrific servant to the club and of course I wish him well and he’ll have my support.  However I believe it’s a another gross error of judgement on the part of the board. There’s a vast difference between managing young academy players who, by and large will do as they are told and managing and trying to make something out of a squad of professionals, the vast majority of whom are bereft of the footballing ability required at the level in which they are operating.

I wish him all the luck in the world because he is going to need it.

Hearing the mid-contract interviewee is David Healy.

Most will already be aware of it, but Linfield are the Rangers of Northern Ireland.

Healy played for Rangers in 2011-12.  And wait for this; his first game was against us on 12th February 2011 and he scored the last goal in a 6–0 win and then on 2nd January 2012, he scored against us again with the first goal in a 3–0 win.

For those concerned about how an appointment of Neil Lennon might be “perceived” then an appointment of David Healy should raise similar concerns.

I honestly couldn’t care less who or what our manager is, but if these really are the options then I’d prefer it to be either Valakari or Hammell or a combination thereof.

  17. 3 hours ago, Mad Dog said:

Good thing about Valakari is that the Finnish league concludes in just a few weeks, so could potentially keep Hammell on in the interim and avoid having to pay out compensation.

Not sure if that will be the case.  The currant bun has an article on this:

The owner of KuPS has warned Motherwell they will have to pay top dollar to land Simo Valakari. Owner, investment banker Ari Lahti who heads up Ice Capital, isn’t ready to let his gaffer go on the cheap. KuPS lead the Veikkausliiga with 10 games left and are in the semis of the Finnish Cup. Lahti said: “If a situation arose that Motherwell really wanted Simo then a pretty significant compensation would probably be required.  As far as I understand we are not in that situation yet and at this stage we are of course talking about a theoretical question. But winning the title is worth at least €1M euros to us. If we win the league championship we seriously bet on reaching the group stages of the Champions League next season. The champions' path to the group stage is significantly easier than others.”

Lahti’s firm finances the club from Kuopio and it’s believed they write off losses of six and seven figures every season.
